'Joker 2' confirmed: Full title revealed as Joaquin Phoenix reads through the script

Joker director Todd Phillips has confirmed that there's a sequel in the works - and that Joaquin Phoenix will return in the titular role.

 

The super-villain origin story - which followed Batman's most infamous nemesis on his descent into madness - was a smash-hit when it was released back in 2019.

 

Almost three years later, it's finally been confirmed that the second chapter in Joker's story is coming to our screens.

Phillips, who directed and co-wrote the first movie, revealed in an Instagram post that he's teamed up once again with co-writer Scott Silver to write the sequel.

 

He shared a snap of the red-bound script, which bore both his and Silver's names, as well as the working title for the new movie: 'Joker: Folie à Deux'.

 

As if all this wasn't exciting enough already, Phillips' post also appeared to confirm that Phoenix would be reprising his role. In another photo, the actor - who won an Academy Award for his harrowing portrayal of the Joker in the first movie - could be seen reading through Phillips and Silver's script.

 

 

Meanwhile, although next to nothing has been confirmed about the sequel's plot, many have theorized that its title could hold some clues as to what will happen.

Folie à Deux is a psychological disorder where two or more people share the same mental illness or delusion. Many fans are therefore hoping that they'll be seeing the Joker's infamous sidekick Harley Quinn - or even his arch-nemesis Batman - in the upcoming flick.

 

As for who will play these characters if they do appear, that still remains to be seen.

The caped crusader was most recently brought to the big screen by Robert Pattinson in the hit superhero film The Batman earlier this year. Meanwhile, Margot Robbie has played Harley Quinn in several DC projects since the 2016 movie Suicide Squad.

 

 

Joker was originally supposed to be a standalone film set outside of the main Batman movie timelines.

 

It follows Arthur Fleck, an isolated clown in Gotham City, as he is pushed to the brink and slowly transforms into his evil alter-ego.

The film won praise from critics and audiences alike and went on to earn 11 Oscar nominations. It took home two awards - Best Actor for Phoenix and Best Original Score.
