SINGAPORE - A muay thai instructor offered Thai massage to one of his female trainees even though he was not trained to perform it. He then sexually assaulted the woman while massaging her. On Wednesday (Jan 22), Tan Wai Luen, 30, was found guilty of sexually penetrating the 33-year-old woman without her consent. He is one of the co-founders of Encore Muay Thai in Joo Chiat Road, but is no longer an instructor there. In delivering her verdict on Wednesday, District Judge Ong Chin Rhu said that the victim's testimony in court was credible. The judge said Tan "lacked credibility" and his version of events was "contrived". The victim, who cannot be named to protect her identity, testified that she attended a free trial class at Encore Muay Thai on Oct 1, 2016, after she saw an advertisement on Facebook. Tan was the instructor of the class, which had three other women whom she did not know. Deputy Public Prosecutor Kavita Uthrapathy, in her submissions, told the district judge that the woman was alone with Tan after the lesson when the other three left and he sat her down to discuss gym packages. The DPP said: "At some point during the discussion, the accused offered the victim a free Thai massage and told her that he was the only one at the gym who was trained to do Thai massages. "The victim accepted the offer of a free Thai massage and as directed by the accused, proceeded to the area in the gym with a massage table, closed the curtains and took off her clothes, except for her panties, lay face down on the massage table and covered herself with a towel." The court heard that Tan started massaging the woman before he sexually penetrated her. She shouted at him and the massage continued for about 15 minutes after that. The woman was about to leave the gym after dressing up when she noticed that its main door was locked from the inside. She unlocked the door by turning a knob and left. "That was when it dawned upon her that the entire ordeal was premeditated and the accused had deliberately locked the main door," said DPP Kavita. The next day, the woman told another co-founder of the gym about her ordeal and the latter lodged a police report. DPP Kavita said that Tan initially denied giving the woman a massage in his statement to the police, but later admitted that he had done so during the trial. Muthu Murugesan, a 34-year-old Indian national, was charged with one count of insulting the modesty of two people under Section 377BA of the penal code. He is accused of removing his pants and stroking himself, intending that this act would be seen by two people, whose identities are protected by gag order. The prosecutor said that Muthu might face additional similar charges. He was offered S$10,000 bail and has to return to court next month. Muthu is among the first to be charged with this new offence. Under 377BA, anyone who utters any word, makes any sound or gesture or exhibits any object intending to insult the modesty of any person will face a maximum jail term of one year, a fine, or both. Previously, only women could have their modesty insulted, under Section 509, which has been repealed. The penalties were the same as those for section 377BA. A polytechnic student was sentenced to a minimum of six months of reformative training last Tuesday after he trapped and molested a girl in a secondary school toilet. The 17-year-old pleaded guilty in November last year to molesting the girl. The accused and the victim cannot be named to protect the victim's identity. The youth first molested the girl, also 17, in a Yishun flat, in July last year. He struck again a week later in early August when they returned to their alma mater to help conduct National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) training. After searching the classrooms, they decided to check the female toilets. He asked the victim to check if anyone was in the toilet to make sure it was empty before he went in, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Phoebe Tan. He then suggested entering the last and biggest cubicle to search for the pencil. After they went in, he locked the door and grabbed her breast. As she tried to kick him, he touched her private parts. He touched her again as she tried to push him away but could not overpower him. He also asked her if they could perform various sex acts. When the victim tried to reach for the door, he would block her and push her back. After she received a phone call from a security guard, she took the chance to break free and escape from the cubicle. She made a police report the next day. For outrage of modesty, the accused could have been jailed for up to two years, fined and/ or caned.

MANCHESTER: An Indonesian student described as Britain's most prolific rapist was jailed for life on Monday (Jan 6) for a catalogue of sex offences on unsuspecting men he drugged and assaulted. Police believe that Reynhard Sinaga has abused at least 195 men over two-and-a-half years, the Guardian reported. He was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 30 years. Sinaga was convicted of 159 offences, including 136 rapes and eight attempted rapes, at four separate trials, according to the Crown Prosecution Service. He is already serving 88 concurrent life sentences with a minimum of 20 years before he can be considered for parole after his first two trials, which heard cases put forward by 25 victims. Monday’s sentencing was for the third and fourth trials, where he was convicted of counts relating to 23 more victims. Police have yet to identify at least 70 of his victims. North-west deputy chief crown prosecutor Ian Rushton was quoted as calling Sinaga the “most prolific rapist in British legal history”. The 36-year-old mature student reportedly lured victims into his flat by pretending to offer help, then drugging them until they passed out before attacking. Most of the victims were undergraduates in their late teens or early 20s, The Guardian said. Sinaga would wait for intoxicated men outside nightclubs and bars near his flat, then approach them with the offer of more drinks or a place to sleep. Sinaga was caught in June 2017, when one of his victims regained consciousness while he was being assaulted. The victim fought him off and called the police, the BBC said. Police subsequently found hours of footage depicting the attacks after they seized his phone. The Crown Prosecution Service said detectives discovered 3.29 terabytes of graphic material of the sexual assaults equivalent to 250 DVDs or 300,000 photos. One of the assaults lasted for eight hours. The victims seen in the videos were then traced using items found inside the flat, which include stolen phones, and IDs. Some of the victims were unaware that they have been raped until they were tracked by the police. Experts told the jury they believed the victims had been drugged, probably with a date rape drug, the Guardian said. "Sinaga's unthreatening demeanour duped these young men - many of whom thanked him for his kindness in offering them a place to stay - into thinking this monster was a Good Samaritan," said deputy chief crown prosecutor for northwest England, Ian Rushton.
