  2. SINGAPORE: Noted lawyer Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss said today (3 March) that it is hard to believe founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew did not read or understand the contents of his last will, amid the latest turn in the Lee family feud. Her comments come on the back of Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean’s revelation that Lee Hsien Yang and his wife Lee Suet Fern – the youngest son and daughter-in-law of the late Lee Kuan Yew – are being investigated by the police for allegedly lying in a legal proceeding relating to the will of the late former PM. Mr Lee Hsien Yang has responded by dubbing this latest action continued “persecution” by the Singapore authorities. The estranged brother of current Singapore PM Lee Hsien Loong has also asserted that he is the “real target” behind the authorities’ actions against his wife and son, Li Shengwu. The bitter dispute has gripped Singaporeans and dominated national discourse for over five years. This latest development has also triggered public scrutiny of Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s last will – the main point of contention between the Lee siblings. Ms Chong-Aruldoss is among several public figures who have weighed in on the issue. Posting a picture of the demolition clause in Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s last will with his handwriting next to it, she noted that it is “hard not to notice” the visibly conspicuous clause, which takes up 12 lines in the document. Ms Chong-Aruldoss also noted that the lawyers who witnessed Mr Lee’s last will had said that “LKY read through every line of the will and was comfortable to sign and initial at every page, which he did in our presence. We then confirmed that we witnessed LKY’s signature by placing our own signatures at the relevant execution blocks respectively.” Pointing out that the application for Probate was granted without challenge, despite being based on the last will, Ms Chong-Aruldoss said: “I hope no one saying that Mr Lee initialled this page where the clause appears without reading or understanding what was written on that page. That cannot be.”

  8. KUALA LUMPUR: At least three people were killed and close to 35,000 people have been forced to flee their homes following continuous heavy rain and flood in Malaysia. The southern state of Johor remains the worst-hit state, with 31,865 people evacuated to flood relief centres as of Friday (Mar 3) morning. According to the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), 209 flood relief centres have been opened in Johor. Segamat remains the worst affected district in the state, with 11,941 people evacuated to 76 flood relief centres. This is followed by the districts of Kluang (5,216), Batu Pahat (4,011) and Kota Tinggi (3,413). In the district of Johor Bahru, 1,216 victims from 356 families were evacuated to six flood relief centres. Aside from Johor, the states of Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka in Peninsular Malaysia are also affected by the floods. Across the three states, 44 flood relief centres were open as of Friday morning, accommodating some 3,000 victims. Separately, in the East Malaysian state of Sarawak, 43 people have been evacuated to two flood relief centres. TWO MORE BODIES FOUND IN JOHOR The death toll due to the flood in the country has risen to three victims, with the latest being two senior citizens believed to have been trapped in their homes in Segamat, Johor. Segamat district police chief Superintendant Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said that the bodies of a man and a woman in their 70s were found at about 11am on Thursday by officers who were monitoring the area after the flood had receded. Both victims were living alone and the water level at their houses had gone as high as the roof, Bernama reported. “Their neighbours informed (us) that the victims did not want to leave their homes when the floodwaters had risen as they thought the floods will not worsen," Mr Ahmad told the media at the Segamat district police headquarters. He added that both bodies have been taken to Segamat Hospital for a post-mortem. Earlier on Wednesday, a man was killed in Johor after his car was swept away by floodwaters. Separately, a 10-year-old boy was feared to have drowned on Thursday after being reported missing at a river in the district of Pekan in Pahang the day before. According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, rain is forecast to hit several parts of Johor from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning. In Pahang, the rain is expected to last in several places from Friday afternoon to Sunday night. Floods are an annual phenomenon in Malaysia due to the northeast monsoon that brings heavy rain from November to March. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/asia/malaysia-johor-pahang-negeri-sembilan-melaka-flood-monsoon-death-toll-3321351
  9. Egyptian antiquities officials say they have confirmed the existence of a hidden internal corridor above the main entrance of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Video from an endoscope showed the inside of the corridor, which is 9m (30ft) long and 2.1m (7ft) wide. The officials say it could have been created to redistribute the pyramid's weight around the entrance or another as yet undiscovered chamber. It was first detected in 2016 using an imaging technique called muography. A team of scientists from the ScanPyramids Project were able to sense density changes inside the pyramid by analysing how it was penetrated by muons, which are by-products of cosmic rays that are only partially absorbed by stone. The non-invasive technique detected an empty space behind the northern face of the Great Pyramid, about 7m above the main entrance, in an area where there is a stone chevron structure. Further tests were carried out with radar and ultrasound before a 6mm-wide (0.24in) endoscope was fed through a tiny joint in-between the stones that make up the chevrons. Image source, EPA Image caption, The endoscope was pushed into the empty space behind a chevron structure on the pyramid's wall The footage from the camera was unveiled at a news conference beside the pyramid on Thursday. It showed an empty corridor with walls made out of roughly-hewn stone blocks and a vaulted stone ceiling. "We're going to continue our scanning so we will see what we can do... to figure out what we can find out beneath it, or just by the end of this corridor," said Mostafa Waziri, head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities. The Great Pyramid, which is 146m high, was built on the Giza plateau during the fourth dynasty by the pharaoh Khufu, or Cheops, who reigned from around 2609BC to 2584BC. Despite being one of the oldest and largest monuments on Earth, there is no consensus about how it was built. Image source, EPA Image caption, The Great Pyramid, seen in the background, is the largest of the three pyramids located at Giza Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass said the corridor represented a "major discovery" that would "enter houses and homes of people all over the world for the first time". He also said that it might help reveal whether the burial chamber of King Khufu still existed inside the pyramid. He speculated that there might be "something important" in the space below the corridor, then added: "I'm sure in a few months from now we can see if what I'm saying is correct or not." A second, larger void inside the pyramid was detected using muography in 2017. It is estimated to be 30m long and several metres in height and is located directly above the Grand Gallery. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-64825526
