  1. SINGAPORE - Had her sister not been wearing her earbuds and listening to music during her run, she might have heard the cracking sound of the tree falling and gotten out of the way in time, said Ms Gillian Loke, 44. Her younger sister, Ms Loke Xiao Li, 38, was killed by a falling tree in Marsiling park on Thursday (Feb 18). The Straits Times was shown the pair of white noise-cancelling earbuds Ms Loke was wearing during her run, during a visit to the four-room flat on Thursday evening. The left earbud was damaged, while the right earbud was intact with the silicon protective jacket still in place. Ms Loke's mother lay on a mattress in the living room and appeared inconsolable. Her husband sat beside her quietly, holding her hand. Ms Loke Xiao Li lived with them and her brother in the flat. Ms Gillian Loke, her eyes red and swollen from crying, said her sister would often return home late as she worked long hours as a senior technical coordinator at Mediacorp. "My sister was driven at work and a social butterfly. She had a way with people and was always surrounded by friends," said Ms Loke, who does freelance administrative work. Her sister also had a passion for motorcycles and rode her bike to work everyday, despite her mother's worry for her safety. The family found out about the accident from the police at around 11am this morning. They later went down to Marsiling Park but Ms Loke Xiao Li's body had already been taken away. Ms Gillian Loke said: "It was a beautiful day at the park and the skies were clear. I never thought this would happen to my sister." She added that her sister was "not an active person" and had only taken up running recently. "I initially thought she had gotten into a road accident, no one expected her to be at the park."

  5. Ikea has clarified that the BYGGLEK collection is out of stock islandwide and that they will be bringing in new stocks by March. The article has been updated to reflect this. https://www.facebook.com/IKEASingapore/posts/3737293516347359 If you haven't already heard, Ikea has a collaboration with Lego and the new BYGGLEK collection was made available in stores yesterday (Feb 18). The unique storage solution gives you the creative freedom to think out of the box — literally — by allowing you to use Lego bricks to build inside, outside or around the box. Need more space? Several boxes can also be connected to form a larger piece PHOTO: Screengrab/Ikea Singapore There are four different articles in the collection with prices ranging from $19.90 to $24.90 and a complete set should add up to $89.60. Buyers are also limited to three pieces per article. However, scalpers have eagerly jumped on the opportunity to buy and resell the products on Carousell and as usual, they have jacked up the prices by quite a fair bit. PHOTO: Screengrab/Carousell Unfortunately, the product is currently out of stock in Singapore at both the Ikea Alexandra and Tampines outlets. The online release for the collection which was scheduled to go live on Feb 25 has also been affected. Speaking to AsiaOne, a spokesperson for Ikea said: "We thank everyone for their love and enthusiasm towards the BYGGLEK collection, however, it's sold out for now. "We had set a limit of three pieces per article per customer so that many more can enjoy the range (even though it was challenging to manage safe operations of the crowds and queues). We are now in the process of acquiring additional shipment by March, stay tuned to [Ikea's] website or social pages for more updates." The complimentary 30359 LEGO® Police Water Plane that customers can get when they spend a minimum amount of $50 in-stores on BYGGLEK products is also out of stock. So, if you've been eyeing the collection and have been considering turning to a scalper to pay an exorbitant amount of money for it, don't. You just have to wait a little bit longer to get your hands on the set.
  6. Hongkongers should be wary of marketing hype touting the health benefits of air fryers, the Consumer Council warned on Wednesday, noting that potentially cancer-causing compounds could still be created from preparing food with such products. In a study of 12 air fryers, the watchdog found frozen thin French fries cooked in half of the tested appliances contained high levels of a naturally occurring, “probably carcinogenic” substance known as acrylamide, which is formed when some foods such as potatoes are processed at high temperatures. A 2015 study published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Food Science found that air frying potatoes – as compared to deep frying them – appeared to decrease the formation of acrylamide significantly, but Consumer Council testing found that the levels were often still well in excess of EU benchmarks. Fries cooked in the HK$999 (S$171) Imarflex IHF-26E, for instance, had the highest amount of acrylamide – 7,038 micrograms per kilogram, or 13 times the EU benchmark of 500 micrograms per kilogram. The model that produced the second-highest amount of the substance was Denki’s DAF-35 (HK$688), at 1475 micrograms per kilogram, and the third-highest amount came from ecHome’s AF1400BK (HK$960), with 1471 micrograms per kilogram. Both figures were almost three times the European benchmark. The chairwoman of the council’s research and testing committee, Nora Tam Fung-yee, urged food lovers to be mindful of their intake of air-fried food, even though the cooking method was generally healthier than deep frying given it used less oil. “Air frying is a kind of roasting. It’s still not very healthy because it may create carcinogenic compounds like acrylamide, particularly when you air fry thin French fries at a high temperature or for a long time,” Tam said. “You should not eat air-fried food very often, and also watch the size of servings carefully.” Professor Nora Tam Fung-yee, of the Consumer Council, speaks about the results of its air fryer tests on Wednesday (Feb 17). PHOTO: Facebook The council said the risk of generating acrylamide could be reduced by adjusting the cooking time and temperature. In separate tests, researchers prepared French fries with the Imarflex model using a lower temperature or a shorter frying time, and the amount of acrylamide dropped to a level that was within EU standards. Imarflex told the council that its suggested cooking temperatures and times in its instruction booklet were only for reference, adding that its recommended time for French fries was intended for ones with a thicker cut, such as potato wedges. Denki did not respond to the council’s findings, and the Post could not contact it for comment. Meanwhile, ecHome said its suggested cooking time for fries was 12 to 20 minutes, while the watchdog had cooked the fries for 23 minutes. But the council pointed out that its manual instructed users to extend the cooking time by two to three minutes for frozen food. For overall cooking performance, researchers found the 12 products – which were priced between HK$298 and HK$2,080 – were quite similar when used to cook chicken drumsticks and spring rolls in accordance with instructions provided by the fryers’ manufacturers or their agents. But when it came to French fries, the disparities between the tested products proved significant. Two models left most of the fries undercooked, while two others cooked them unevenly. Meanwhile, researchers also discovered safety risks with some products. Three models – Proluxury’s PAF052017, Harrow’s HT-AF1200 and Midea’s MF20B – had insufficient insulation between live wires and the machines’ surfaces, which could result in short circuits. The three companies told the council they would strictly control or improve their manufacturing procedures to bring their products in line with safety standards. “We did tests and found some have safety problems, but it’s not so serious that you have to stop using the air fryers,” Tam said. “We just want to remind the consumers that it’s important when you use these air fryers, you know there might be some safety hazards.” Still, she added, users should make sure their children do not touch the machines.
  7. A man was driving along Keppel Road, near Tanjong Pagar, on Wednesday evening (Feb 17) when he saw a group of over 20 cyclists hogging the road. Stomper Brandon shared with Stomp footage of the cyclists taken from his in-car camera at around 10pm. "I saw this group of cyclists, kings of the road, taking up two lanes," he said. "There was another group of over 20 cyclists behind this group. "The estimated number of cyclists along Keppel Road that night was around 50." According to a Facebook post by the Singapore Cycling Federation, cyclists should only cycle in groups of five. The Singapore Cycling Federation added that groups of cyclists should also stay at least 3m away from each other. Under the Road Traffic Act, those who ride a bicycle, power-assisted bicycle, trishaw or tricycle on a road must ride the bicycle, power-assisted bicycle, trishaw or tricycle as near as practicable to the far left edge of the road. https://stomp.straitstimes.com/singapore-seen/group-of-over-20-cyclists-act-like-kings-of-the-road-near-tanjong-pagar

  9. After witnessing a car accident on the 6th Road in Choa Chu Kang North, a taxi driver enthusiastically assisted the victim's motorcycle driver and passengers to call for an ambulance. He was surprised that he was scolded by the family of the driver as "nosy." Taxi driver Admen Lim said in a post on the social networking site Facebook that the driver involved in the accident was a young man. He was backing up at a traffic light intersection without checking the blind spot when the incident happened and hit a motorcycle parked behind him. After seeing this, Admen Lim enthusiastically helped call an ambulance. According to him, the victim was a father and son. He said: "The motorcyclist and the passengers said that they seemed to have pain and they seemed to be injured. I asked the two of them, and they also agreed to call for an ambulance." However, Admen Lim mentioned that a woman came forward and yelled at him shortly afterwards. The other party also referred to him as "nosy" and that they could personally take the two victims to the hospital. In response to this, Admen Lim's reply is that victims should not be moved privately without professionals because they have injuries. From the multiple videos uploaded by Admen Lim, it can be seen that the two female family members of the driver in the accident came forward and asked him why he chose to call the ambulance. During the process, they behaved very unhappy. They yelled at him and asked him "What is the problem with you?" ", also called him "bullying the little boy." The video also showed that the driver in the accident took a photo of Admen Lim. In addition, a man in red who claimed to be the uncle of the driver who caused the accident continued to comfort his family and tried to calm the incident. As of the time of writing, Admen Lim's post has been reposted more than 1,200 times and accumulated more than 100 comments. Many netizens supported his approach, believing that it was a mistake for the driver to reverse at a traffic light intersection. Netizen Intan Anreannish, believed to be the wife of the victim, also left a message in Admen Lim's post, thanking him for helping his husband and son, and admiring his behavior. The Singapore Police Force confirmed in response to the enquiry of "8 Horizons News" that the car accident occurred at 9:47 pm the day before yesterday (16th). The location was along Choa Chu Kang North Road 6, leading to Choa Chu Kang Avenue. The incident involved a car. And a motorcycle. The victims were a 51-year-old male motorcyclist and a 21-year-old male passenger. The Singapore Civil Defence Force stated that one of them was sent to Wong Ting Fong General Hospital for treatment. The case is still under investigation. https://www.facebook.com/admen.lim/posts/10159083146258850

  12. SINGAPORE — A 72-year-old Singaporean man was admitted to intensive care at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) on Tuesday (Feb 16) night after suffering from cardiac arrest. The authorities stressed though, that there is no indication that it is related to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine he had received earlier in the day.In a news release on Thursday, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said that it was alerted to the incident by TTSH on Wednesday. MOH said that the man — who has a history of cancer, hypertension and hyperlipidaemia, a condition related to abnormal cholesterol — had received his first dose of the vaccine on Tuesday morning.Based on the hospital’s initial assessment, “there is no indication that the cardiac arrest was due to (the) Covid-19 vaccination”, MOH added.Further tests are being conducted by the medical team to establish the cause of the man’s cardiac arrest. Before getting his jab, the man had been assessed by trained healthcare personnel to be suitable for the Covid-19 vaccination, MOH said. “In line with our protocols, he was also observed on-site for about 30 minutes post-vaccination and was well.” The ministry stressed that it is important to “vaccinate and protect our seniors as they are the most vulnerable to severe disease and complications from Covid-19 infection”.“The World Health Organization has found no evidence that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine contributes to an increased risk of death in the elderly,” it said. The Covid-19 vaccination exercise for seniors kicked off in Singapore late last month with pilots in Ang Mo Kio and Tanjong Pagar, where larger numbers of seniors live. Health Minister Gan Kim Yong had said then that the pilots would begin “cautiously”, covering 5,000 to 10,000 seniors in each of the two housing estates. MOH had previously said that the pilots would enable the authorities to iron out the operational processes before scaling up the vaccination effort nationwide. Last week, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said that Singapore’s vaccination programme would enter its next phase as seniors from across the island start getting their jabs from Feb 22.Mr Lee, who spoke to reporters at Changi General Hospital on Feb 12, said that the multi-ministry taskforce handling the Republic’s response to the coronavirus would share more details on the plan later. 17. It's public knowledge that local veteran actor Li Nanxing was once saddled with more than $2 million in debts and he turned to a life of gambling which, unfortunately, didn't pay off. On the new Channel 8 talk show The Inner Circle, he told host Guo Liang that he once wore his clothes from his hit TV drama The Unbeatables to a casino in Genting Highlands and was recognised. It was initially a lighthearted conversation as Nanxing shared that he would practise the card tricks that he was taught for the role. But when Guo Liang asked whether the 56-year-old became a more "stylish player" at casinos after that, Nanxing chuckled and turned somber as he opened up about his addiction. He said: "For a time after that, I was really hooked on it, to be honest... I had wound up my business and was looking for a shortcut. I thought, how long would it take for me to settle my debts just with acting? And I happened to be shooting The Unbeatables 2. "If you're lucky, it's like the show depicts — you're winning hundreds of thousands just like that. In a few games, you can get the money back." Nanxing managed to raise $200,00 and went to the nearest casino, which was in Genting Highlands at that time, and even "dressed in clothes from the show". "When I got there, I was recognised. [People said] 'Look, he is Singapore's King of Gambling. Let's follow him.' When the casino security saw me, it was like I was some big shot, a VVIP (Very Very Important Person), and they really escorted me into the casino," he shared. But, Lady Luck was not on his side and Nanxing grimly confessed that he "utterly lost". He didn't clarify if he lost his entire capital of $200,000 but he said that experience was "a lesson" for him. In the end, he turned to behind-the-scenes work to raise the funds needed to pay off his debts. He even worked as an extra on set. Nanxing recalled: "It was for a Hollywood movie. I only had two scenes. I opened the door, asked, 'Who are you looking for?', [someone replied] 'Don't ask', and my character was shot and died. "I even went for auditions. After I submitted my name, they were startled. They were like 'Him? He's auditioning for this?'" As much as it might have been a blow to his ego, Nanxing said matter-of-factly that he had no choice because he needed the money. Eventually, he managed to settle his debts and even got a second chance to return to acting. He said: "Viewers had stayed loyal and still wanted to see me in dramas. I really mustered my courage and returned to acting. It took around four years to settle all my debts."
