  3. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=340486614065889&t=0 In order to drive away pests, the market stall owner sprayed pesticides on the vegetables he sold. Netizens took the video and reported it to the Singapore Food Board. Netizens wrote in the public video through Facebook page All Singapore Stuff: “I saw this aunt spraying insecticides on vegetables and garlic, and I could see many insects running around. I just want to know that this behavior is OK. Accept it?" The video captures an elderly woman in a pink shirt squatting in front of a row of vegetables, holding a can of insecticide in her hand, spraying several packets of garlic. When she moved a few bags of garlic, she could also see insects that looked like flies flying out. Some netizens left messages saying that the stall involved was located in the vicinity of Bangkit, Bukit. As of the deadline, this post has been liked by more than 400 netizens and 160 comments have been posted. Many netizens have left messages criticizing the stall owner's behavior; some netizens also pointed out that this is not the first time the stall owner has done so. Netizen Rafeh Naffir Wak wrote in a message: "Last month I also saw this aunt spraying insecticides, and then a lot of cockroaches ran out, so I have stayed away from the stall." Many netizens are worried about this, thinking that stall owners should not spray pesticides on vegetables, because they may be poisoned if they are eaten, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. Some netizens also pointed out that many market stall owners use this method to repel pests. However, there are also netizens who disagree with the practice of making the video public, and think that the stall owner should be directly reminded that if the other party commits another crime, the relevant authorities will be notified. "8 Horizons News" has contacted the Food Bureau about this incident and is still waiting for a reply.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 — The wait is almost over as Resorts World Genting’s (RWG) movie-inspired theme park Genting SkyWorlds, is set to welcome visitors in the second quarter of 2021. RWG's head of business operations and strategy Lee Thiam Kit said that the group is committed to opening the park this year despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and movement control order (MCO). Lee added that RWG has invested US$800 million (RM3.2 billion) into the park since its conception and believes it will be a valuable asset to the Malaysian economy and tourism industry. “We’re committed to this park and we will see to it that it opens, barring unforeseen circumstances. “Going forward, when we open, there will be jobs created and the park will add economic activity directly and indirectly as well as a boost to tourism in Malaysian and Pahang,” said Lee in a virtual press conference today. Guests at Genting SkyWorlds will get to immerse themselves in 9 movie and adventure-inspired worlds, namely Eagle Mountain, Central Park, Liberty Lane, Robots Rivet Town, Andromeda Base, Studio Plaza, Epic, Ice Age, and Rio. The outdoor park spans a whopping 26 acres with something for everyone amongst its 26 rides and attractions, ranging from thrilling roller coasters to exciting water rides. RWG’s head of theme parks Gregory Pearn said the park will also include rides that will be the first of its kind in the world and that details on these attractions will be unveiled closer to the opening date. Standing in long queues is set to be a thing of the past as Genting SkyWorlds has partnered with Alibaba to utilise virtual queue technology so guests can pre-book their spot on rides and attractions. Visitors will also be spoilt for choice with a range of unique food and beverage options that will further enhance their theme park experience. Construction on the park is in its final stages. — Picture courtesy of Resorts World Genting Genting SkyWorlds, formerly known as 20th Century Fox World, will feature rides and attractions themed around films and franchises from 20th Century Studios. This includes Ice Age, Night at the Museum, and Planet of the Apes. Night at the Museum 2006 Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) Pearn noted that these worlds will be accompanied by original intellectual properties (IPs) from Genting as well. “We do have some (20th Century Studios) IPs in the park such as Rio and Ice Age which are fantastic IPs to have. “We are also complementing these with our own homegrown IPs and in the long-term, the plan is to introduce other IPs to the park as well. “Having Genting SkyWorlds as the hero of the product gives us the chance to be more creative with the proposition and allows us more freedom with what we want to introduce at a later stage,” said Pearn. Pearn added that Genting SkyWorlds will reveal more about its star attractions and other details such as ticket prices in the coming months. Operations at Resorts World Genting have resumed effective 16 February following a temporary closure on 22 January due to the re-imposition of the Movement Control Order (MCO). 24 days close!!!! Acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney 21st Century Fox logo.svg Initiator The Walt Disney Company Target 21st Century Fox Type Full acquisition Cost US$71.3 billion Initiated December 14, 2017 Completed: March 20, 2019 The acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney took place on March 20, 2019. Among other key assets, the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney included the 20th Century Fox film and television studios, U.S. cable/satellite channels such as FX, Fox Networks Group, a 73% stake in National Geographic Partners, Indian television broadcaster Star India, and a 30% stake in Hulu. Immediately preceding the acquisition, 21st Century Fox spun off the Fox Broadcasting Company, Fox Television Stations, Fox News Channel, Fox Business, FS1, FS2, Fox Deportes, and the Big Ten Network into the newly formed Fox Corporation. However, strict SOPs are still in place with shorter operating hours, limited availability or closure of certain facilities/attractions. Meanwhile, operations in the UK remain shut. As the MCO 2.0 has partly affected businesses during the peak period (i.e. Lunar New Year holiday), we have earlier reduced our FY21F earnings forecast by 14%. Under the expectation that the travel and tourism industry is on the road to recovery following news of vaccine rollouts, we believe the worst is over for GENM. Earnings are only expected to recover slowly as we reckon the impact of economic fallout on consumer sentiment will continue to affect spending on non essential and discretionary activities in Malaysia. Although the outdoor theme park is targeted to open by mid-year, it is only expected to accommodate some 20,000 tourists, which is still far from its initial target of 3m visitors a year. 11. SINGAPORE - The number of babies born in Singapore fell to a 10-year low last year, while total deaths were the highest in almost a century. The recession and massive uncertainties due to the Covid-19 pandemic may be leading some couples to put off expanding their families, experts say, even though most newborns last year were conceived before the pandemic. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/births-in-singapore-hit-decade-low-as-deaths-climb-to-historic-peak
  12. EU's 'vaccine passports' will only be valid with EMA-approved COVID jabs A proposal to introduce so-called "vaccine passports", to be put forward on March 17th to aid free movement within the bloc, will only be valid with EMA-approved vaccinations. Why? Because the vaccinations from unapproved companies will not be covered by the EU liability clause and quality control. Ylva Johansson, commissioner for internal affairs confirmed the details on Friday evening after an EU source had told Euronews hours earlier. The source reported that EU justice commissioner Didier Reynders made it clear that member states were free to get their citizens vaccinated by other products, but they would not be allocated a licensed travel certificate unless their jab had been from an approved company, of which there are currently four. Pfizer/BioNtech, AstraZeneca, Moderna and Johnson&Johnson. The duration of the digital green certificate should be limited to the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, the EU source said, adding that tests and quarantine will continue to be the enablers of free movement. Thus, vaccination does not become a pre-condition for free movement. The Green Pass certificate will be available in digital and paper-based format. Reynders indicated Thursday that data protection and possible discrimination remained key concerns for the European Commission working on a proposal for a COVID-19 travel certificate. But Friday's leak shows that there is a focus on vaccination selection. Reynders is aiming to fast-track the proposal at the European Parliament, leading to a "binding instrument" for all member states before the summer. European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has said it would be technically possible to develop a "green pass" within about three months using data indicating whether a person has been vaccinated, tested negative, or is immune after contracting the disease, but that many political issues must first be resolved. The certificates could help smooth a return to air travel and possibly avoid another disastrous summer holiday season, as the tourism industry and broader economies suffer from restrictions. Southern European countries dependent on tourism, like Greece, Spain and Portugal, support such a system, but their northern EU partners, like Germany, have reservations over whether such certificates would work.

  14. When Malaysia-based actress Sasqia Dahuri had to settle down in Singapore with her husband due to travel restrictions, she found herself craving a taste of home. But the vibrant, strongly flavoured food she enjoyed eating back in Kelantan, where she was from, is a rarity across the causeway. So she took matters into her own hands, cooking up traditional fare using recipes from her mother to feed family and close friends while selling extra servings through a side home-based business. Photograph: Fabian Loo Laksam was the first dish she prepared. Soft rice noodles come rolled into neat, tight circles, then topped with spoonfuls of coconut-scented fish gravy. “Many of my friends have never even heard of the dish before,” shares the self-taught cook. Those who tried it kept coming back for more, and demand for Sasqia’s laksam grew. Encouraged, she decided to expand from her home kitchen and open a stall dedicated to Kelantanese cuisine. She says: “I hope to be able to let more people try my food.” Kelaté, thus, provides a platform for Sasqia to shine a spotlight on the classic hometown fare that she loved, and grew up eating. The location at a hawker centre was also a deliberate one – she wanted to offer a casual, affordable, and easily accessible introduction to this lesser-seen cuisine. Photograph: Fabian Loo Its debut menu features just three items: belly-warming mee celup (from $4.90), which comes in options of noodles or kway tiao; the iconic laksam (from $4.90), creamy and spicy; and colek malah (from $4), anchovy-laced vegetable fritters spiced with piquant chilli sauce. At first glance, mee celup resembles most noodle dishes. The broth, soothing and clear, is made with chicken, beef, and radishes. Stir in the toppings – fried garlic, groundnuts, chilli flakes, green chillies – and the bowl changes dramatically. “Mixing everything brings more flavour to the food,” says Sasqia. Now, it becomes a layered production: sweet, salty, spicy – hallmarks of Kelantanese cuisine. Sasqia shares that the region’s proximity to the Thailand border could be a reason why the food is often rich and bold. She adds: “What I like most about food from Kelantan is that it is very flavourful.” Photograph: Fabian Loo Laksam, a personal favourite of Sasqia, might get its taste from the fish gravy, slick with fragrance from coconut milk; but the unassuming rolls of rice noodles are of equal importance. At the stall, each batch comes made from scratch, and takes over five hours to complete. This is why Kelaté only serves limited portions of the dish daily; making the noodles is labour-intensive. “We have to be very gentle,” says Sasqia. “It’s very fragile.” The store has since caught the attention of locals hankering for a taste of something novel, as well as Malaysians missing authentic home-cooked cuisine. After opening Kelaté, Sasqia has received many messages from people thanking her for bringing a piece of Kelantan to Singapore. “It makes me feel so satisfied,” she says. Heartened, Sasqia shares that there are plans to expand the menu. In the works: lompat tikam, soft rice pudding with coconut milk and gula Melaka; and akok, a flour-based snack sweetened with palm sugar. Sasqia says: “I want to create a pit stop for people here to come and enjoy Kelantan food.”
