This will make the brand's 10th and 11th outlet in Singapore. Christine Ng-Ling shared on a Don Don Donki Facebook Group the Downtown East outlet's latest look, with other members sharing that the shelving and stocking of products are going on in the space. 4. Less-crowded trading floors, facial recognition systems and split work areas could all become routine for bankers in Singapore as the Southeast Asian financial hub readies for office life in a post-Covid world. Financial institutions in the city should use more no-touch technology, allow more space for each employee and adopt split teams on trading floors once staff return after the pandemic, according to recommendations from a study commissioned by the city’s banking association and the Monetary Authority of Singapore that was published on Tuesday. Lenders are also being encouraged to use hot-desking, motion detectors, temperature and face-mask detection screening and improved ventilation to avoid potential contamination, according to the report. Staff should be allowed to work from satellite offices or branches in addition to the main headquarters, it said. Such measures “are imperative to strike a balance between workplace safety and minimizing disruption to business operations,” said the study, which was carried out by real estate consultancy Cushman & Wakefield Plc and some of Singapore’s biggest banks. Cautious Approach With more than 200 financial institutions operating in Singapore, the city is among global banking centers looking at how to get staff back to the office after they’ve spent more than a year juggling working from home and family life. The city-state has taken a cautious approach to returning staff to offices even as infection rates remain low. “MAS encourages our financial institutions to consider the recommended strategies in the Playbook to enhance safety and resiliency in the workplace,” MAS deputy managing director Ong Chong Tee said in a statement. “This will be helpful to be well prepared for any situations in future that may require safe distancing and work-from-home arrangements.” Wall Street has also been unveiling plans to bring more bankers back in the coming months. Hundreds of interns are set to work in JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s New York and London offices in the coming months. Citigroup Inc. will begin inviting more workers back in July, and expects 30% of its North America employees to return throughout the summer. By contrast, employees in Shanghai have been back in the office for months after the Chinese city was the world’s first major center to reopen last year after taming the virus. The Singapore report also compares the city’s approach in managing the pandemic with other major financial hubs like Hong Kong, Shanghai, London, New York and Sydney. It found that the density of its offices is comparable to Sydney, with an average 80 to 120 square feet per seat. That’s more spacious than Hong Kong, where it’s 40 to 100 square feet. Reshaping Hubs How financial institutions adapt to a post-Covid world has the potential to reshape business districts in hubs around the world. Already some global banks have said that an embrace of more flexible working will allow them to significantly reduce their property footprint. HSBC Holdings Plc is predicting a 40% reduction in its property footprint over the long term and Lloyds Banking Group Plc is projecting a 20% cut in office space by 2023. Others are less excited about the idea with David Solomon, chief executive officer of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. calling remote work “an aberration that we are going to correct as quickly as possible.” In Singapore, DBS Group Holdings Ltd. is allowing all staff to work up to 40% of their time remotely and has started precautionary measures such as frequent air purging. United Overseas Bank Ltd. will allow about 65% of its 26,000-strong workforce to work remotely two days a week once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted. The bank has been accelerating its efforts to transform its workspaces such as moving away from assigned seating. “Banks in Singapore have adapted their operations quickly over the past year to cope with the Covid-19 outbreak,” Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp. Chief Executive Officer Samuel Tsien said in the statement. “However, the longer term impact of the pandemic on social behaviors and workplace norms is not yet fully known and understood.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-23/singapore-joins-wall-st-in-planning-for-post-covid-office-life

  6. KUALA LUMPUR (March 23): Tropicana Corp Bhd's Tropicana Gardens Mall has achieved a take-up rate of 68% or about 185 units out of 300 units. Some 45% or 123 units have started trading. The mall, which has about one million sq ft net lettable area, will see more tenants opening by July, raising the number of trading tenants to 62%, according to the mall's managing director Andrew Ashwin at a media event held today at the 6,200 sq ft Starbucks Reserve, the largest in Malaysia. Also at the event, Tropicana Corp group managing director Dion Tan Yong Chien said that moving forward, there will be more unique tenants. The mall was launched in March last year and due to the Movement Control Order (MCO), saw its essential outlets like Village Grocer and pharmacies open but no fit-outs were allowed. Today, the mall sees about 200,000 footfalls per month with the aim of 500,000 footfalls by year-end, Andrew said. Tropicana Gardens Mall is part of the Tropicana Gardens integrated development comprising serviced apartments and an office block, which is the headquarters for Tropicana Corp.
  7. (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp is in talks to buy messaging platform Discord Inc for more than $10 billion, Bloomberg News reported https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-23/microsoft-said-to-be-in-talks-to-buy-discord-for-more-than-10b?sref=V7uxlNge, citing people familiar with the matter. Discord has reached out to potential buyers and Microsoft is one of them, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. One person said it was more likely to go public than sell itself. Earlier in the day, VentureBeat reported that Discord was exploring a sale and it was in final talks with a party. (https://bit.ly/3lEHa0I) Microsoft declined to comment, while Discord did not immediately respond to Reuters request. Discord, which is valued at around $7 billion as of last December, is a platform on which users coordinate group activities such as games, discussions and even virtual parties. The Xbox maker has been seeking to strengthen its video game offerings with $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax Media last year, its biggest gaming acquisition ever. The COVID-19 pandemic has boosted the prospects of gaming companies as people stayed at home and turned to video games for entertainment during lockdowns. With its strong gaming business, Microsoft has also been looking to own mass social media platforms. Its last big social media deal was the $26.2 billion acquisition of LinkedIn in 2016, while it failed in its bid for short video app TikTok's U.S. assets in September last year. Recently, the Financial Times reported about Microsoft's interest in buying social media platform Pinterest Inc.
  8. Moving through a cluttered corridor at Block 906 Jurong West Street 91 is a gruelling task for a wheelchair-bound resident, who has to leave home for kidney dialysis. Facebook user Cocoanna Christian posted a video highlighting the "daily struggle" that she endures when trying to reach the common lifts on the sixth and eighth floors of the block. She said that she lives on the seventh floor, which has no lift access. In her post on March 8, Cocoanna said: "Not easy as my arms get scratched by all the twigs and branches of the potted plants, or smell the stinky shoes outside the unit coz of my height while in a wheelchair. "Has to be so careful not to fall into the corridor drain coz the space is so cramped. "And this is why I don't go out much in the last 6 years since I gotten sick. But now I had to travel out on alternate days for blood dialysis." She also likened the journey to an obstacle course. The 42-year-old woman told Lianhe Wanbao: "I need dialysis three days a week and my husband is not in good health either. "There is no lift access on the seventh floor where we live, so my husband has to move my wheelchair to the sixth floor whenever I need to go out. I will then walk downstairs and sit in the wheelchair to take the lift. "But there is a family on the sixth floor whose potted plants have made my life very difficult." There are over 30 potted plants along the corridor, reported Wanbao. Cocoanna said she started using a wheelchair eight years ago when her health started to decline. A bacterial infection also caused her heart and kidneys to fail. Although she survived the ordeal, she has to go for dialysis on alternate days. Due a loss of strength in her legs, she is only able to stand for two minutes. Cocoanna added: "I usually try not to go out. Whenever I do, the potted plants make it fraught with difficulties." In response to a Stomp query, a spokesman for West Coast Town Council said: "Upon receiving the feedback on 8 March 2021 from Ms Cityruth Cocoanna Christian regarding the potted plants obstructing the common corridor, our staff visited the said unit to advise them to reduce the number of potted plants. "The staff then informed Ms Cityruth Cocoanna Christian on the matter. "A follow-up visit made to site by the staff found that the advice was unheeded. "A written warning was issued. "In response to the written warning, the lessee who had previously cited their busy schedule, agreed to clear (the items) by Monday (March 22). "From our latest check, the site was indeed cleared. We are glad that the issue has been settled amicably." https://stomp.straitstimes.com/singapore-seen/woman-on-wheelchair-struggles-to-move-through-jurong-west-corridor-clutter-cleared
  9. A 21-year-old man who was due to enter his plea on Monday morning (March 22) for sexual offences went missing after having breakfast with his father and lawyer, and failed to show up in court. The High Court has issued a warrant for the arrest of the accused, who is one of two men accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl when she became drunk following a game of Truth Or Dare. He faces one count of attempted rape and two counts of sexual assault by penetration. He was 18 years old when he allegedly committed the offences against the girl on Oct 17, 2017 at the foot of a Housing Board flat in Pasir Ris Street 51. The parties in the case cannot be named due to a gag order to protect the victim's identity. The man also faces unrelated charges of theft, causing hurt and dishonest misappropriation. His lawyer, Mr Clarence Lun, told the court on Monday that before the court hearing scheduled for 10am, he met the accused and his father for breakfast at the adjacent building. However, at about 9.10am, the accused said he had a stomachache and went to the toilet. Mr Lun said when the accused did not return after some time, they went searching but could not find him. The accused also did not respond to phone calls and text messages, the lawyer said. His father, who stood bail for him, told the court that he did not believe his son would jump bail. The issue of whether the $30,000 bail would be forfeited will be determined at a separate hearing. The man's co-accused, a 21-year-old man, had earlier pleaded guilty to raping the girl. In the early hours of Oct 17, 2017, the girl became increasingly intoxicated as she played Truth Or Dare at a void deck with a group of friends. When the group left the block, the girl had to be piggybacked, as she was too drunk to walk properly. At about 4am, the two accused waited for the girl when she stopped to relieve herself at the foot of a block, and became separated from the others who had gone ahead. The girl then rested on the ground. The duo tried to rouse her, and when she did not respond, they allegedly touched her breasts and sexually violated her. https://stomp.straitstimes.com/singapore-seen/man-accused-of-attempted-rape-of-15-year-old-after-truth-or-dare-game-fails-to-show
  10. https://www.ft.com/content/24090cf8-9b6c-45b9-9a8d-41ca2450194d US agency questions AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine trial NIAID says outdated information may have provided ‘incomplete view’ of efficacy. AstraZeneca might have included outdated information from a clinical trial of its Covid-19 vaccine, a US health agency said on Tuesday, potentially throwing previously published positive results into doubt. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said it had been notified by the trial’s data and safety monitoring board that “it was concerned by information released by AstraZeneca on initial data from its Covid-19 vaccine clinical trial”. “The DSMB expressed concern that AstraZeneca may have included outdated information from that trial, which may have provided an incomplete view of the efficacy data,” the NIAID said. It said the board had also notified the US Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority and Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical company of its concerns. The NIAID said it had urged AstraZeneca “to work with the DSMB to review the efficacy data and ensure the most accurate, up-to-date efficacy data be made public as quickly as possible”. AstraZeneca and Oxford university did not immediately respond to a request for comment early on Tuesday. The statement came after results from a long-awaited American trial of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine were released on Monday. More than 32,000 volunteers took part, mostly in the US, but also in Chile and Peru. The trial showed the vaccine was 79 per cent effective at stopping symptomatic Covid-19 and 100 per cent effective at preventing people from falling seriously ill. The company said there were no safety issues regarding blood clots. Earlier reports of side effects from taking the vaccine, including a rare combination of blood clots, bleeding and low platelets, had prompted at least 16 European countries to suspend use of the jab. Most have now resumed its use, after the European Medicines Agency said it found no link between clotting and the vaccine. The drugs watchdog left the door open to a link between the vaccine and the rarer combination of side effects, but has said throughout the crisis that the vaccine’s benefits far outweigh its risks.
  11. KUALA LUMPUR (March 23): IBM will be shutting down its Global Delivery Centre located in Cyberjaya, Selangor on May 31 — seven years after it was first opened in February 2014. "As part of IBM's continual review of the most efficient way to source our products and services, our global centre supporting client information technology (IT) infrastructure in Malaysia will close on May 31. There is no impact on other IBM operations in Malaysia," an IBM spokesperson told The Edge. Aside from its Cyberjaya operations, IBM also has a head office located in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya. "IBM remains committed to Malaysia and will continue to focus on building its capacity and capability to help our clients on their hybrid cloud and AI (artificial intelligence) journeys; and the nation in its pursuit to be a knowledge-based society as set out in the Digital Economy Blueprint," the spokesperson added. However, the spokesperson declined to disclose how many jobs will be lost as a result of the closure of the Cyberjaya centre. IT professional circles in Malaysia have been abuzz with news of IBM's Cyberjaya centre closure, with messages on online forums claiming that the shutdown will put over 1,000 employees out of work. Many are understood to have started submitting their job applications to other IT companies in the country. Meanwhile, operations at IBM's head office located in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya will continue to operate as usual. IBM was one of the first technology companies to invest in Cyberjaya. Back in 2011, former Malaysian prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced the American multinational company, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, would be investing RM1 billion to develop the Global Delivery Centre in Cyberjaya. Najib also said then that the centre was expected to create 3,000 skilled jobs. According to a 2014 article by Digital News Asia (DNA), IBM's Global Delivery Centre in Cyberjaya delivered high value services to clients in the areas of software platform management, server systems operations, security and risk management, and project management. The centre also supported IBM's cloud services, including the provisioning and management of IBM SmartCloud Enterprise + (SCE+) solutions, designed for running critical enterprise workloads, such as enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management (CRM) applications, DNA reported. IBM is not the first multinational to exit Cyberjaya in recent months. According to a report by telecoms news provider TelcoTitans, German IT company T-Systems sold its business in Malaysia to private investment holding firm Quintephi Sdn Bhd at the end of November last year. "The transition is expected to be completed in mid-2021, at which point T-Systems will no longer have a presence in the country. T-Systems had more than 800 employees in Cyberjava in 2019," the report said.

  14. Indulge your guilty pleasures with time-tested regret eating when Taco Bell opens its first Malaysian outlet next month at the Cottage Walk commercial center in Cyberjaya, Selangor. Rather than coming to Petaling Jaya as originally announced, the American fast-food chain, famous for cheap Tex-Mex cuisine often consumed to wash down a night of partying, will bring its cheese-heavy range of tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and nacho bowls to KL’s startup bros starting April 2. “Malaysians can look forward to an exciting and globally-famous Taco Bell experience which offers a twist to familiar Mexican favorites such as tacos, burritos, and more,” Taco Bell said in a press statement. The Cyberjaya outlet will be open 10am to 10pm daily for dine-in and takeaway. Of course, like most fast-food chains that have opened their doors in Malaysia, can we hope to see localized versions of Tex-Mex fare like rendang tacos as a Ramadan special, maybe? Although the California-based chain last year named Petaling Jaya for its first location, a company representative told Coconuts over the phone that renovation of the site is not completed. Dozens of Malaysians took to Twitter to express their glee. “Yeay! I always see this in movies but now it’s coming to Cyberjaya,” @Thewaterlilies wrote. Be careful what you wish for, as any of Taco Bell’s biggest fans would readily warn. Some lamented the location, which is about 50 kilometers from Petaling Jaya, like @Aliajamiee, who tweeted: “I want to try Taco Bell but it’s in Cyberjaya. Why so far huhu.” FIND IT: Taco Bell Lot SD-02, Off Persiaran APAC, Cottage Walk, 63000, Cyberjaya, Sepang, Selangor 10am to 10pm daily, starting April 2
  15. He landed a job here two years ago as an aircraft technician. Every day, Mr German Gonzales would call his wife back home in the Philippines. On Thursday night, he did the same, telling her he was hoping to return home and see her and their two young children "after the pandemic ends". It was the last time husband and wife spoke to each other. The 31-year-old cyclist died in a road accident on Friday after being trapped under a bus at the junction of Loyang Avenue and Pasir Ris Drive 1. A 63-year-old bus driver with bus operator SBS Transit has been arrested for careless driving causing death, and the police are investigating the accident. Shocked Speaking to Chinese-language evening daily Lianhe Wanbao from the Philippines after the accident, his wife, Ms Shiela Marie, 29, said: "I didn't think that his life would end just like that. "My heart really hurts, and I don't know what to do." The accident happened at about 10.30pm. Lianhe Wanbao reported that the cyclist was dragged for about 30m under the bus. Rescuers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) used lifting equipment to extricate Mr Gonzales and he was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic. Ms Marie told Chinese-language newspaper Shin Min Daily News that the couple's two sons, aged eight and nine, have been crying non-stop since they learnt of their father's death. "I don't know what to do. He always uses his bicycle to get to work, so I don't know where he was going that night," she said. Ms Marie said her husband's uncle will be taking care of the funeral arrangements and that his body will be flown back to the Philippines today. Shin Min Daily News reported that Ms Marie had written a Facebook post dedicated to her husband. "Let us travel again, I will still be by your side. I hope this is all just a dream," she said. A Lianhe Wanbao reader, named only as Mr Liao, 30, told the paper he was driving by the Loyang-Pasir Ris junction when he saw a bicycle crushed under a wheel of the bus. "SCDF officers arrived about two to three minutes later and used lifting equipment to move the front half of the bus up," he said. Mr Liao said the bus passengers had already alighted and they were subsequently picked up by another bus. Responding to queries, SBS Transit senior vice-president of corporate communications Tammy Tan said: "We are sorry that this has happened. The bus was travelling straight and about to make a right turn at the traffic junction which was green in its favour when the accident occurred. "We are trying to get in touch with the cyclist's next-of-kin to extend our deepest condolences and offer our assistance." She added that SBS Transit is assisting the police in their investigations.
  16. A resident expressed his frustration at how the common passageways of some Housing Board (HDB) blocks in Tampines are filled with clutter. Stomper DQ said that the issue at Block 464 and Block 468 at Tampines Street 44 has been ongoing "for years". Photos that he took show the ground floor areas cluttered with numerous bulky items such as tables, chairs, poles and buckets. DQ told Stomp on March 7: "This poses a fire hazard and is causing obstruction to residents. It is also likely to cause mosquitoes to breed." He said that the items are still there as of Tuesday (March 16). Stomp has contacted Tampines Town Council for more info. This is not the first time DQ has highlighted the situation at Tampines Street 44. In July 2020, the town council confirmed that it had received feedback regarding the clutter along the passageway at Block 464. A spokesman had said: "We have been engaging with the resident and have given them some time to sort and clear their items. We have also provided assistance to the resident with the removal of bulky items." In March 2019, the town council said that there was no obstruction to the walkways in response to DQ's complaints about clutter at Blocks 452, 464 and 468. The town council also said it would persist with checks at the aforementioned blocks to ensure that there is no obstruction, adding: "We would like to assure residents that we will not hesitate to enforce on non-compliance should there be a safety concern." According to a Shin Min Daily News report in August 2020, the clutter at Block 464 belongs to a 76-year-old man known as Mr Wu. Mr Wu, who is aware of the complaints, said that he had been advised by the town council and would need some time to clear the items. Photos: Shin Min Daily News He also explained that he helps his neighbours to repair wooden furniture for free. Due to a lack of space in his flat, he places the items outside and sends them back after repairs. Mr Wu clarified that while some tools and planks might seem like junk, they are actually materials that he needs to carry out repair works. Although some are indeed items that need to be discarded, his legs make it inconvenient to move around, added Mr Wu, who plans to throw the rubbish away all at once after accumulating them.
  17. The police are looking into an incident where a man allegedly sent threatening messages to over 100 people using another person's number. A Stomper informed Stomp that he recently received a message from an unknown number asking him whether he wanted to take up a loan. "I don't know him at all," said the Stomper. "He didn't sound local and didn't speak English so I knew he was impersonating a local bank's staff. "I scolded him not to scam people and he became angry, threatening me and asking me to meet him at 'Kallang Airport'. "I laughed at him, mocking him that Kallang Airport is closed." The Stomper said that was what spurred the 'scammer' to reply that he would use his number to send SMSs to others. "He sent those messages to other people to play with me," he said. He shared a screenshot of what the other man had sent to other contacts on Mar 11 and Mar 12. The text says: "Ask your mother and wife come find me, I want rape them, call me now!!" "I did not send this out to them, I don't know them at all," said the Stomper. "In total, he sent that message and other similar messages out to over 100 people," he said "Because I had over 80 messages from people scolding me and also a lot of people calling me. "Anyway, it is crazy that the scammer can send messages impersonating other people's numbers. "I think the general public should be aware that even our phone numbers to send messages can be impersonated. "This is really scary." The Stomper said he has since made a police report. The police confirmed with Stomp that a report was lodged and are looking into the matter.
  18. Denmark has reported that two hospital staff members suffered brain hemorrhages and blood clots within two weeks of receiving AstraZeneca vaccines against COVID-19. One has died and the other is seriously ill. The Danish Medicines Agency is investigating to determine whether the conditions were linked to the vaccines. “The Capital Region of Denmark can confirm that two of our employees have been admitted with symptoms of blood clots in the brain and cerebral hemorrhage,” a spokesperson said in a statement shared with the Ekstra Bladet newspaper. “One has sadly passed away.” The disturbing news was reported as nations grapple with whether to trust the AstraZeneca vaccine amid concerns that it may be linked to blood clots and abnormal bleeding. “Right now we are examining whether this is the exact same disease picture with multiple blood clots, a low count of platelets and hemorrhages,” Tanja Erichsen, a director at the Danish Medicines Agency, said in a radio interview with the Danish national broadcaster DR, The New York Times reported. Denmark, along with other Scandinavian countries and several European nations, suspended use of the AstraZeneca vaccine earlier this month. But the European Union’s drug watchdog, the European Medicines Agency, issued a statement Thursday saying that it considered the vaccine “safe and effective” but would continue to track results. It also noted that the benefit of the vaccinations in combating COVID-19 outweigh the risks. “The benefits still outweigh the risks, despite possible link to rare blood clots with low blood platelets,” EMA’s Safety Committee said in a statement. The death in Denmark is the second reported after an AstraZeneca vaccine. A 60-year-old woman died earlier this month of a blood clot following a vaccine. She had unusual symptoms after the injection, including a low number of blood platelets and clots in small and large vessels, as well as bleeding, according to the Danish Medicines Agency, Reuters reported. Norway is also examining two deaths following vaccines. So far, after millions of vaccinations, the number of bleeding disorders following the injections appears minuscule. The EMA review covered 20 million people in the U.K. and 30 European countries. It included seven cases of blood clots in multiple blood vessels and 18 cases of a rare condition that is difficult to treat called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, Reuters reported. AstraZeneca has not yet commented on the Danish cases.
