  1. SINGAPORE, July 23 (Reuters) - Three quarters of Singapore's COVID-19 infections in the last four weeks were among vaccinated individuals, government data shows, as a rapid ramp-up in the city state's inoculations leaves fewer people unvaccinated. Singapore has already inoculated nearly 75% of its 5.7 million people, the world's second highest after the United Arab Emirates, a Reuters tracker shows, and half its population is fully vaccinated. It reported 1,096 locally transmitted cases in the last 28 days, of which 484, or 44%, were fully vaccinated people, while 30% were partially vaccinated and the remaining 25% were unvaccinated. There were only seven severe cases requiring oxygen support and six of them were unvaccinated and one was partially vaccinated, the health ministry said. "There is continuing evidence that vaccination helps to prevent serious disease when one gets infected," the ministry said, adding all of the fully vaccinated and infected people showed no symptoms or mild symptoms. Experts said infections reported by vaccinated people do not mean vaccines are ineffective. "As more and more people are vaccinated in Singapore, we will see more infections happening amongst vaccinated people," Teo Yik Ying, dean of the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health at the National University of Singapore (NUS). "It is important to always compare it against the proportion of people who remain unvaccinated.... Suppose Singapore achieves a rate of 100% fully vaccinated... then all infections will stem from the vaccinated people and none from the unvaccinated." The data also showed that infections in the last 14 days among vaccinated people aged over 61 were at about 88%, higher than the younger age group. Linfa Wang, a professor at Duke-NUS Medical School, said elderly people have been shown to have weaker immune responses upon vaccination. In Israel, which also has a high vaccination rate, about half of the 46 patients hospitalised as of early July in severe condition were vaccinated, and the majority were from risk groups, according to the health authorities. It was not immediately clear whether the data reflects reduced protection offered by vaccines against the more contagious Delta variant, which has been the most common version of the virus in Singapore in recent months. Singapore uses Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and Moderna for its national vaccination programme. It recorded 162 new locally-transmitted COVID-19 cases on Thursday, close to an 11-month high from earlier this week. The rise in cases prompted authorities to tighten curbs on social gatherings, as they push to boost vaccination rates, especially among the elderly. https://www.msn.com/en-sg/news/singapore/vaccinated-people-in-singapore-make-up-three-quarters-of-recent-covid-19-cases/ar-AAMt3Nj
  2. KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — A 67-year-old Singaporean grandmother managed to eat 10 bowls of her favourite curry noodles a day before the city-state enforced the month-long dine-in restrictions. And to make her meal even sweeter, the senior citizen, dubbed the Big Appetite Grandma by Lianhe Wanbao, got her meal for free courtesy of the curry noodle hawker Huang Guoxiong located at Block 478 Tampines Street 44. According to the portal, the woman, Jiang Ahua, would normally visit the hawker centre three or four times a week with her husband and especially loved the curry noodles. Upon the Singapore government’s announcement of the dine-in restrictions on July 20, Jiang ordered 10 bowls of curry noodles with Huang. Huang told the portal that his curry noodles come in three sizes — small S$3 (RM12), medium S$5 (RM21) and big S$8 (RM33). Jiang, said Huang, ordered the small bowl to be eaten on July 21. He added that when Jiang put forward her orders, he thought she was being boastful. “Normally the younger customers can eat three or four bowls. For people my size, the maximum they can eat is five or six bowls. “So when the grandmother said she could eat 10 bowls, I did not believe her,” he said, adding that he then offered the meal for free if Jiang could really finish the meal. True to her words, Jiang managed to finish her 10 bowls of curry noodles in 45 minutes. “Grandmother may have aged and looked petite but she can really eat,” said Huang. He added that this was his first time having a customer that could eat so many bowls of his noodles in one go since opening his stall at the hawker centre more than a decade ago. Observations by the portal’s reporter found that each bowl of curry noodles contained three pieces of potato, one chicken wing, several pieces of fish cakes and tofu.

  4. TEN commercial units used as cloud kitchens at CT Hub 2 have been sold for more than S$8.6 million or S$2,450 per square foot (sq ft) this month, Huttons said on Thursday. It did not identify the buyer. The Business Times first reported in May that design and construction firm Chiu Teng Group is understood to be selling its portfolio of 29 ground-floor cloud kitchen units in CT Hub 2 via expression of interest. These 10 F&B-approved commercial-titled units have a total unit area of 3,516 sq ft. They are fitted to operate as cloud kitchens, and are fully tenanted to established F&B operators such as Da Paolo, Blu Kouzina, Crown Coffee, Duke of Congee, My Fav Bowl, Petite Pantry and several other tenants. CT Hub 1 and 2 are commercial and industrial mixed developments centrally located in the Kallang Way Industrial Estate and Business Park district. They each house a combination of office, retail, light-industrial and F&B units and are a two-minute walk from Bendemeer MRT station, which is on the Downtown Line. Cloud kitchens are deemed as more "Covid-resilient" due to their business model focusing on takeaways and deliveries, said Jonathan Lo, associate senior marketing director from Huttons, in a statement. The units sold were all tenanted with an average gross rental yield of above 5 per cent.

  6. SINGAPORE: This year's National Day Parade (NDP) will be postponed to Aug 21 after the scheduled end of Phase 2 (Heightened Alert), the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said on Thursday (Jul 22). A ceremonial parade will be held instead on the original date of Aug 9. "It will be similar to the one held last year at the Padang, but will take place at the Float@Marina Bay," the ministry said in a press release. "The heartland fireworks and Red Lions displays previously announced to be held over the Aug 7 to 8 weekend will be cancelled." The NDP rehearsal and preview, previously planned for Jul 24 and Jul 31 respectively, have also been postponed. "To prepare for the NDP on Aug 21, rehearsals will be conducted later in smaller component groups," MINDEF said, adding that the dates will not be announced so as to discourage crowds from gathering around Marina Bay. "Since 1966, the NDP has been held every year to mark Singapore’s independence," the ministry said. "This national event brings together Singaporeans from all walks of life, as one united people to affirm our unity and nationhood. The changes this year will enable NDP 2021 to be held in safer conditions, while maintaining that cherished tradition." Singapore on Thursday moved back to Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) amid a spike in COVID-19 cases. Group sizes for social gatherings have been reduced from five to two and dining-in has been suspended. The restrictions will be in effect until Aug 18. The Health Ministry said earlier this week that the Government will review the measures in two weeks. MINDEF's announcement comes two days after co-chair of the COVID-19 multi-ministry task force Lawrence Wong said that this year's National Day Parade would continue as planned, with the Defence Ministry reviewing the scale of the event and other measures. The parade was scheduled to be held at The Float @ Marina Bay on Aug 9, with spectators required to undergo pre-event testing and be vaccinated against COVID-19. The organising committee had not announced spectator limits but previously said that tickets for the parade will not be open for public balloting because of pandemic safety concerns. Tickets would instead be given to those who have contributed to the fight against COVID-19, the committee said earlier this month. They include Singaporean frontliners, essential workers and community volunteers. Following the postponement of the National Day Parade, the Prime Minister's Office announced that the National Day Rally will be pushed back by a week to Aug 29. As of Jul 21, the overall number of new cases in the community has increased from 88 cases in the week before to 766 cases in the past week. The number of unlinked cases in the community has also increased from 14 in the week before to 82 cases in the past week. Source: CNA/zl(ta)

  9. SINGAPORE (THE BUSINESS TIMES) - Supermarket operator Sheng Siong Group said on Wednesday (July 21) that its subsidiary has entered into a lease agreement to open a new store in China. In an exchange filing, the mainboard-listed company said the new store - located in the city of Kunming in Yunnan province - is expected to be operational before the end of this year. The lease agreement was signed for retail space spanning 30,772 sq ft. With the new store, Sheng Siong Group would have a total of four stores in China, in addition to 63 in Singapore. The group said the new store is not expected to have a significant impact on its financial performance for the current financial year ending Dec 31. The announcement on Wednesday comes around a month after the group announced its third store in China. In June, the supermarket operator said its subsidiary had entered into a lease agreement for a 37,800 sq ft retail space, also located in Kunming. The third store was then expected to be operational before the end of the third quarter this year. Sheng Siong Group shares rose 0.6 per cent, or one cent, on Wednesday to close at $1.60 before the announcement.

On Wednesday (21 Jul), Tampines 1 shared the good news that a new Don Don Donki outlet will soon open at the shopping mall. Source This will be Don Don Donki’s 11th outlet in Singapore and its 2nd outlet in the East. Recently, a shopper spotted the Don Don Donki mascot Donpen at level 2 of Tampines 1. Accompanying the mascot is a sign that read, “Konnichiwa Tampines 1”, inviting shoppers in the area to hang out soon. According to a Facebook post on I Love Tampines, the outlet will be opening soon, and it will take up units #02-28, 29, and 30, beside the Watsons store. It will take over the units previously occupied by Uniqlo and Browhaus. Unfortunately, the store’s opening date has not been revealed, but it is said to open “soon”. 2nd outlet in the East This exciting development comes less than a year after the Don Don Donki outlet at Changi Airport closed, leaving residents hoping for a full-fledged Japanese supermarket to open at Tampines. Now, it looks like their wish is finally coming true. The Tampines 1 outlet will be the 2nd one in the East. It follows after an outlet opened at Downtown East back in Dec 2020.
  12. SINGAPORE: A student at St Joseph’s Institution (SJI) was taken to hospital on Thursday (Jul 22) after a fall from height at school. The police said they received a call for assistance at 38 Malcolm Road, the address of the school, at about 11.40am. "A male teenager had fallen from height and was conscious when conveyed to the hospital," said the police, adding that they do not suspect foul play. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said a person was taken to KK Women's and Children's Hospital. The boy fell from the fourth level in the common area after recess, said Mr Lee Kok Fatt, who is chairman of the SJI board of governors. The school contacted his parents and a teacher accompanied the student to hospital, Mr Lee told CNA. In a media statement, SJI said that the school called for an ambulance after the incident. "The boy has received medical treatment and is warded for monitoring. As police investigations are currently ongoing, we are unable to provide more details," said the school. "We seek your understanding and cooperation to not speculate or share any source of information to respect the privacy of the injured student and his family."
