  8. SINGAPORE: A security officer who sexually assaulted a drunk man in a toilet was sentenced to six years' jail and three strokes of the cane on Wednesday (Nov 21). The incident took place on May 6 last year, not long after 35-year-old Low Chih Kin started his job as a security officer at Suntec City. The court heard that at about 3am that day, Low was heading to a male toilet at Suntec City Tower 1 when he saw a man lying on the floor. The 36-year-old assistant building manager, whose name is protected by a gag order, had attended his company's annual dinner and dance event at a hotel, where he had several alcoholic drinks. He then went to a bar at Suntec City for a second round of drinks. The man had gone to the toilet to relieve himself but ended up lying on the floor, the court heard. When Low saw the intoxicated man lying on his side at the entrance to the toilet, he shifted the man's body and engaged in a number of intimate acts with him, including kissing his mouth. The victim did not stir, so Low unbuttoned his pants and performed a sexual act on him several times. The court heard that the victim drifted in and out of consciousness and could feel sensations, but could not open his eyes or fight Low off. Low stopped his actions when he realised that leaving saliva on the man could lead the police to him. He left the toilet, but his movements in the corridor were caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. Sometime after this, the victim's wife called him and he told her: "Please help me." She went to Suntec City and found her husband lying on the floor with vomit stains on his arm and loosened jeans. She called the police, saying her husband suspected he had been "raped by a guy". Her husband was taken to hospital, while Low was traced through CCTV footage and arrested. The prosecution asked for a sentence of six years' jail and three strokes of the cane to be imposed. Deputy Public Prosecutor Eunice Lau said that the victim had to go for tests to be cleared of any sexually transmitted diseases. Even though he was given the all-clear, he had to face the inconvenience of tests, she said. Low's defence lawyer Diana Ngiam said the sentence the prosecution asked for was fair, adding that Low was sorry. "This is his first brush with the law and will be his final brush with the law," she said. Principal District Judge Ong Hian Sun allowed Low some time to speak to his mother after passing the sentence.
  9. ENGLAND star Dele Alli ranted at staff at a five-star hotel for refusing to upgrade him to a £3,000-a-night penthouse suite. The £100,000-a-week Spurs midfielder appeared in mobile phone footage arguing in the foyer of The May Fair. Alli, 22, is seen gesturing and raising his voice as he leans on the reception desk alongside England teammate Ross Barkley, 24. The video is said to have been taken at 5am on Monday, the day after England’s 2-1 Nations League win against Croatia at Wembley. On the clip, Alli is heard saying: “Fourteen grand. Think I’ll put up with any of this sh*t? What are you going to do for me? I’m just . . . but I’ve got a room here tonight.” Barkley, a £90,000-a-week Chelsea midfielder, stands calmly next to Alli but is not heard speaking. The 36-second video ends when a concierge intervenes. It is said to have been filmed by another hotel guest, who is heard saying: “Ross Barkley and Dele Alli. Absolutely embarrassing. Embarrassment. These are England players, look at them, look, absolute disgrace, 5 o’clock in the morning at the Raddison May Fair. “These are England players, look, these are role models.” Last night the clip was being shared online and on WhatsApp.
  10. While serving sentence for past offences, a youth got into an intimate relationship with a woman from a dating app and began extorting her for money. Lee Weng Jun, a 22-year-old Malaysian, had filmed the 23-year-old woman in a video chat and promised to delete the footage in exchange for money. Lee, who is a Singapore permanent resident working as a warehouse assistant, was sentenced to two years and three months’ jail on Tuesday (20 November) on one charge of extortion. He will also be caned one stroke for the offence. One count of attempted extortion was taken into consideration for sentencing. Lee befriended the woman on 20 July through the dating app “Tantan”. They later began chatting on WhatsApp before becoming intimate with each other. On 11 August, the duo engaged in a video call where the woman took off her clothes. Lee recorded the woman without her knowledge. Lee only informed her of what he had done after the video call ended. He then asked for $2,000 in exchange for deleting the obscene video. He demanded for a receipt or other proofs of transfer and threatened to release the video. Fearing for her reputation, the woman complied, according to the prosecution. She made two transfers of $1,000 into Lee’s account and on the same day and sent screenshots of the transfer to Lee. After receiving the money, Lee asked the woman if he would be going overboard if he demanded for an extra $1,000 in exchange for deleting the video. The woman pleaded with him, saying that she was a student and not working. Lee then asked the woman for $500 more, prompting the woman to ask that the man keep his promise. Lee assured that he had already deleted the video even though he had not. The woman lodged a police report on 24 August after he admitted that he had not deleted the video. He had asked for another $2,000. Lee was arrested the same day. His mobile phone, which he had used to record the video, was seized. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Wu Yujie told the court that Lee had committed the offences while on home detention for property-related offences including theft. Lee showed that he was not remorseful and not committed to rehabilitation, said the DPP. In mitigation, Lee, who was not represented, said that he wanted to begin his sentence on Tuesday as he did not want his two-year-old daughter to “forget me as a daddy”. District Judge (DJ) Kessler Soh, however, ordered his current sentence to begin after Lee completed his previous sentence of two years and nine months. “I hope you remember this, serve your sentence, go out and never come back again so that you can spend time with your family,” said the DJ to Lee. The judge added that he had considered Lee’s young age in only imposing one stroke of the cane. The minimum jail term for extortion is two years. Lee could have been jailed up to seven years with caning.
