She has never compensated the loss. - She later told the court she had been swindled out of 60 million rupiah (~S$4,295) by three men in Indonesia, believing one used black magic to control her. She had limited education (primary school up to age 14), poor English, and suffered domestic violence in past marriages.   The Killing   - On Apr 28, 2022: Low questioned her for ~30 minutes over the theft. Angry at the nagging and fearing police action, she decided to kill him — choosing suffocation with a pillow so she would not see his face and would leave no obvious injuries, hoping his death might seem natural. - She pressed the pillow over his face for about 30 minutes. - Afterwards, she stole S$70 in cash and a mobile phone (which she pawned), packed her things and fled. Low was found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene; she was arrested the next day.   Court Proceedings & Claim of Black Magic   - In mitigation, she claimed she was “hypnotised by black magic” from someone back home. - When the judge repeatedly clarified whether the act was voluntary, she confirmed through her lawyer that she had acted on her own. - An IMH psychiatric assessment found she had borderline intellectual functioning but no intellectual disability or unsound mind at the time — this did not negate responsibility. - Prosecution noted her claimed history of scams was unrelated to the theft and the killing itself.   Sentencing Decision   - Judge noted the plan was formed spontaneously that afternoon, not premeditated over time; while the crime was horrific, there was no exceptional viciousness or disregard for life that would warrant the death penalty. - She offered apologies through counsel and sought forgiveness from the victim’s family.
