    • A Chinese man, who was the general manager of a company, wanted to recruit a friend from his hometown to join the company. He drove a truck to Malaysia to pick him up and had him lie behind the driver's seat to hide in boxes and planks. After successfully passing through customs, he was even allowed to stay in a public housing unit rented by the company. Tong Baobao (29 years old), a Chinese national, faced three counts of violating immigration laws and ten counts of violating customs laws. On Monday (May 4), he pleaded guilty to five of the charges and was sentenced to 12 months in prison, three strokes of the cane, and a fine of 322,000 yuan. The defendant did not pay the fine and was instead sentenced to 80 days in jail in lieu of payment. The case details reveal that the defendant, the general manager of beverage wholesaler Wan Changye International, wanted to recruit his fellow countryman, Nie Baochao (37 years old), into the company. However, Nie Baochao was refused entry to Singapore via the Woodlands Checkpoint on September 28, 2025, due to failing to meet the requirements. Nie Baochao subsequently sought the defendant's assistance to illegally enter Singapore. The defendant then drove his company's white van to Malaysia on November 9th last year to meet with Nie Baochao. After they met, the defendant instructed Nie Baochao to lie down behind the driver's seat and cover his body with a wooden board and a box. At 11:40 pm that same night, when the defendant arrived at the Woodlands checkpoint, he only showed his passport, while Nie Baochao remained hidden behind the driver's seat. After successfully clearing customs, the defendant drove the truck to his residence on Yishun Street 20, which was company-rented accommodation for its employees. Without the company's consent, the defendant allowed Nie Baochao to stay at the company premises. On November 19, the defendant was arrested by customs officers at a warehouse near Taghor Lane in the Upper Thomson Road industrial area on suspicion of possessing illicit alcohol. Nie Baochao was also apprehended at the scene.   The charges allege that the defendant stored thousands of bottles of untaxed beer in a warehouse on Tagore Lane and a self-storage facility on Woodlands Loop, evading approximately $50,000 in customs duties, excise duties, and GST. The defendant also stored nearly 1,000 bottles of evaded beer in a HDB flat in Yishun, evading approximately $2,700 in customs duties, excise duties, and GST.
