A 39-year-old Malaysian man was arrested at Woodlands Checkpoint on Dec. 22 for attempting to smuggle 3,272g of cannabis and 1,709g of crystal methamphetamine.
The arrest was revealed by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) in a Dec. 29 joint news release.
The man may face the death penalty if found guilty of violating the Misuse of Drugs Act, which penalises those who import into or export from Singapore more than 250g of methamphetamine or 500g of cannabis.
Subjected to 'enhanced checks'
According to ICA and CNB, the accused was referred for enhanced checks at Woodlands Checkpoint on Dec. 22 evening "based on information from ICA's Integrated Targeting Centre".
ICA officers subsequently uncovered two black bundles believed to contain controlled drugs in his bag,
Upon being alerted to the detection, CNB officers conducted further checks and found a total of seven bundles believed to contain controlled drugs.
The drugs seized have an estimated worth of over S$237,000 and could potentially feed the addiction of around 1,440 abusers for a week.
