    • The incident occurred as the PCG escorted boats distributing aid to fishermen in the area, spokesman Commodore Jay Tarriela said in a statement. Video released by Manila showed a China Coast Guard ship and a much larger vessel bearing the number 164 on its hull colliding with a loud crash.   "The Philippine Coast Guard vessel is in between the Chinese Coast Guard on the left and the Philippine Navy on the starboard side and what happened on that incident is the Chinese Coast Guard increased its speed wanting to catch up with the Philippine Coast Guard vessel," Tarriela said.   "The intention perhaps was to block the Philippine Coast Guard vessel, but we increased our speed that's why there is a miscalculation. When it turned, it cannot already pull back its sharp turn, so what happened is the nose of the Philippine Navy warship was the one got hit by the Chinese Coast Guard," he said.   The incident caused "substantial damage to the CCG vessel's forecastle, rendering it unseaworthy," he said.   It was unclear if anyone was hurt in Monday's incident.     Tarriela said the Chinese crew "never responded" to the Filipino ship's offer of assistance.   "Although it's very unfortunate, we also care for the personnel of the Chinese Coast Guard, but this is what really happens kapag tayo ay hindi sumunod sa maayos na regulasyon at pagpapatakbo ng mga sasakyang pandagat sa karagatan," he added.   Gan Yu, a Chinese coast guard spokesperson, confirmed that a Monday confrontation had taken place without mentioning the collision.     "The China Coast Guard took necessary measures in accordance with the law, including monitoring, pressing from the outside, blocking and controlling the Philippine vessels to drive them away," he said in a statement.   WATER CANNON    During the same operation, the BRP Suluan was "targeted with a water cannon" by the Chinese but "successfully" evaded it.  "Wala sa tropa natin sa Coast Guard vessels BRP Suluan and BRP Teresa Magbanua ang na-injured. Wala rin sa mga barko natin ang nagtamo ng damage," Tarriela said. The PCG added that it “safely escorted the Filipino fishermen to a secure location, where they are now being provided with essential fuel and supplies.”   The reported collision is the latest in a series of confrontations between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost entirely despite an international ruling that the assertion has no legal basis. More than 60 percent of global maritime trade passes through the disputed waterway.   President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the country's patrol vessels would "continue to be present" in the area to defend, as well as exercise Manila's sovereign rights over, what it considers to be part of its territory.   ‘REAPING WHAT ONE SOWS’    Meanwhile, Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada said Monday's collision was “a classic case of reaping what one sows.” “The Chinese Coast Guard must cease and desist from engaging in dangerous maneuvers against our Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and other maritime vessels,” he said in a video statement.    “These tactics not only endanger our maritime personnel and fisherfolk—they also escalate tensions unnecessarily. Nothing good will come of such actions, except the empty display of logistical superiority," he added.  Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros said China “should stop this violence.”  “This proves that Beijing’s own actions are reckless, and endanger their own people. I hope they take this incident as a lesson,” she said.  Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva thanked the Filipino personnel involved in the incident.  “It only shows the peril our troops face in asserting our rightful jurisdiction on our own waters… We are grateful despite of the harassment, yung Coast Guard personnel natin are all safe and able to continue their duty of patrolling our territorial waters,” he said.    “And again we reiterate our call to the Chinese Coast Guards and fishing militia that your continued presence and operation at the West Philippine Sea is illegal and unauthorized. The West Philippine Sea is ours and please get out of Philippine waters.”   https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2025/8/11/2-chinese-ships-collide-after-chasing-philippine-vessel-in-bajo-de-masinloc-pcg-1102
