A man who thought he was helping two desperate women near Tampines MRT station was allegedly nearly scammed out of hundreds of dollars.
Stomper Jason is now warning others to beware of a similar tactic.
He shared with Stomp that the incident happened on April 22 between 6.10pm and 6.20pm, as he was walking from Tampines Bus Interchange to fetch his daughter from childcare.
"Two middle-aged women, who looked like they were from China, approached me," he recounted.
"They claimed that their Alipay was blocked and that they hadn't eaten since morning so they asked for some money to take the MRT and buy some food.
"I thought of ignoring them, but they used a bit of human psychology and said: 'We are not scammers. We are really desperate and have no one to turn to'."
The women claimed their Taiwanese friend would be arriving the next day and they would be able to return the Stomper his money then.
Feeling sympathetic, Jason handed them $30 for their MRT fare back to their hotel in Woodlands and some food.
But the story didn't end there.
"Then they said they had been evicted from their hotel and asked if I could lend her $300 more," Jason added.
On the way to the ATM, the amount increased to $370, with the women insisting they were in the beauty industry in Hong Kong and would return the money the next day.
"I was at the ATM and thought maybe I should call my friends or my wife for their opinion on if the women are swindling my sympathy or if they are genuine," he said.
"My friends didn't pick up, but my wife did, and she told me to call the police."
The Stomper said that the moment the women saw him dialling 999 and hesitating to withdraw the money, they fled the scene.
Jason's wife, who had arrived by then, captured a video of the women and noticed they had been 'eyeing him like a hawk' at the ATM.
He said the police arrived at around 6.30pm, but the women were already gone.
He told Stomp that he believes the pair may target other areas in Singapore and is urging the public, especially the elderly, to stay alert.
"Next time, if you really want to help, my friend suggested just calling a taxi to send them to the Chinese Embassy. FOC. At least you won't get scammed."
Jason added: "Please share this with your parents and friends. I really hope no one else falls for this."
And I actually volunteered for Tamp WP team but now I have reservations because of the lady in Punggol
Though watching Eileen sweat would be interesting..
