A question to jobseekers: What’s your take on the current employment market?
According to a report published by the Ministry Of Manpower on March 10, unemployment rates saw an increase this January, with a total of 69,800 unemployed residents.
Although the unemployment rates “remained within the range typically seen during non-recessionary periods”, it seems like future university graduates are feeling the pressure.
That much was evident in a TikTok video posted by thrivebt, in which uni students were asked to share their opinions on the job economy.
A number believed the job economy “is not good”, is “very saturated”, and “tough”, with one girl saying that it’s “harsh” for some majors.
She added: “I know some of my computer science friends, they are finding jobs and it is a bit hard [for them]."
One guy, who managed to secure a job thanks to a previous internship, also said that most of his peers have yet to find a job.
When asked to rate her sentiments from “not worried to very worried” about bagging a job, a girl said with no hesitation: “Very worried."
A separate TikTok posted by Asian Boss also illustrated the concerns some local uni students are facing at the moment.
Titled “why can’t graduates find jobs in Singapore”, the clip saw the interviewer asking current students: “Do you think it’s becoming so hard for students in general to get decent jobs upon graduating now?"
The first guy opined that it’s “extremely difficult” for fresh grads, whether they are from NUS, NTU, or SIM to find jobs now, adding that it's the “interview process” that trips him up most of the time.
Speaking of the challenges when it comes to landing a job, a girl said it's “finding a job that matches your expectations."
"A lot of us are quite stressed about the pay we can get when we graduate," she added.
She explained that while fresh grads can get jobs, there is also the factor of finding a compromise between what they want, and what they realistically have to do to “survive” in a competitive market.
That same sentiment was echoed by a male student, who believes that even when a graduate does not land their dream job, they can slowly, “through hard work, networking, [and] communicating with friends” progress towards what they actually want.
He also had this positive take: “It’s not the end of the world just because you graduate and can’t find your dream job immediately.”
Netizens were divided on how they felt about the responses.
While some agree on how tough the job market is for fresh grads, a few also believe they are being too picky.
“It’s easy to get a job. It’s just difficult to find the job you want. It’s hard for expectations to match reality,” read one comment.
A number also believe it is impractical to look for a job that comes with a good starting pay and work life balance, with one even asking students to “get real” as there is no such thing as a “dream job”.
Some netizens even advised jobseekers to first “ignore the paycheck” and prioritise getting into the job market before thinking about what they desire.
So are things really tough for fresh grads, or are their expectations just too high?
