A woman tried to get away without paying with a fake PayNow screenshot on two separate occasions at a Thai restaurant at Katong Square. The owner of Khao Hom by Rung Mama reached out to Mothership with CCTV footage of a woman appearing to show a faked PayNow screenshot. First incident: scammed owner of S$196.20 The first incident took place on Jul. 6, 2024, at about 12pm, according to the timestamp on the CCTV footage. A woman appears to be quickly pulling up a screenshot of a PayNow transaction at the counter: GIF courtesy of Mothership reader. The woman then showed the staff a screenshot of the transaction, totalling S$196.20: Photo courtesy of Mothership reader. The screenshot looked, to all appearances, fairly authentic. However, a few days later when the store conducted a weekly sales check and referenced it against their bank account and transactions, they realised the money had not gone through. They therefore suspected that the woman had scammed them with a fake screenshot. The store owner, however, did not make a report to the police at the time. All the same, the store owner shared that they have not recovered the S$196.20 they lost. Second incident: Attempted second scam of S$138.10 The same woman came down to the store on Dec. 28, 2024, the owner said. She then tried to show a fake PayNow screenshot showing a transaction amount of S$138.10: Photo courtesy of Mothership reader. The staff, however, managed to notice that it was a faked screenshot in time to ask the woman to switch to her credit card to pay. Since the woman made the payment, she did not make a police report on her. Similar incidents happened at other shops A similar scam had occurred at a bubble tea shop in Clarke Quay on Dec. 18, 2024. A woman was caught on camera scamming a bubble tea shop out of a substantial amount of money with the help of a fake PayNow screenshot. Another incident of this kind occurred back on Aug. 30, with a woman scamming an East Coast Road cafe. Footage of her alleged scam was then caught on the in-store surveillance cameras and shared online. The clip has since been removed. The owner of Khao Hom by Rung Mama believes that the woman who scammed their restaurant might have been the same woman who tricked the cafe on East Coast Road. Though the owner has no concrete proof of this, they pointed to the similar bag and dress style worn by the woman in both instances. The owner of Khao Hom hopes to raise awareness of such a scam tactic by sharing her experience with the public.

A decomposed body, believed to be that of 15-year-old Yap Xin Yuan, was found in a river in Banting, Selangor, on Dec. 29, 2024. Image via China Press Yap had been missing for 10 days prior to the discovery of her body. According to Malaysian media China Press and Sin Chew Daily, Yap's 16-year-old boyfriend has been arrested for assisting with murder investigations. Both papers reported that the boyfriend confessed to dumping her body into the river with the help of his family. The two teens became a couple about two months after they met at the lion dance centre, according to media reports. Image via China Press via Harian Metro Missing for 10 days Yap was reported missing by her family on Dec. 19, 2024. Image via Sin Chew Daily According to Sin Chew Daily, Yap initially told her family that she was going for a lion dance practice and had her father drive her to the lion dance centre on Dec. 19 morning. Yap did not return home that night, which prompted her family to go to the lion dance centre to find her. However, the centre was closed because the person-in-charge was overseas. That's when they sensed something was wrong. Yap was not contactable and her handphone was switched off after midnight. Her family also tried to contact the boyfriend through Instagram, but he didn't reply. Her family then decided to seek help on social media in addition to making a police report. Boyfriend initially denied responsibility A few days later, Yap's boyfriend went to the police but claimed that he had nothing to do with Yap's disappearance. According to China Press, he said that Yap had taken a private hire vehicle to his house on Dec. 19 morning, but they quarrelled after having a meal together. He claimed that Yap left his house in a private hire vehicle afterwards. While the boyfriend told Yap's family the same story, they became suspicious of him after discovering discrepancies between his account and evidence gathered from other sources. The private hire company revealed that Yap took one ride that day and nearby CCTV showed Yap arrived at her boyfriend's place at a different timing than what he had claimed. However, an investigating officer apparently said they couldn't find any evidence on the boyfriend then, Sin Chew Daily reported. A body found Malaysian police discovered a body on Dec. 28 at a Banting river after receiving a tip-off. A preliminary autopsy determined that the features of the body were similar to that of Yap, including her height, braces and the clothing and accessories she was wearing at the time she was missing. As the body was highly decomposed, the person's identity could not be confirmed without a DNA test. The results were expected in the first week of January 2025. Her cause of death had yet to be determined. The discovery of the body escalated Yap's missing case to a murder investigation. Along Yap's 16-year-old boyfriend, his 20-year-old brother and his 51-year-old father were also arrested on Dec. 29. Photo of the boyfriend. According to China Press. Boyfriend confessed to dumping body: media Further media reports on Dec. 31 said that the boyfriend confessed to dumping Yap's body into the river during questioning. Both China Press and Sin Chew Daily reported that sources revealed that the boyfriend claimed they had drunk beverages laced with drugs together, but Yap ended up dying. He claimed that he panicked and asked his family for help, which led to the decision to dump her body in the river at Sungei Changgang. Investigations are ongoing. Family awaiting DNA results Yap's family initially refused to accept that the body belonged to their daughter, according to Sin Chew Daily. A relative had told reporters that the mother still hoped that she was alive, as the DNA test results were not out yet. However, Shin Chew Daily reported on Jan. 1, 2025, that Yap's father said while sobbing that he had accepted the loss of his daughter and would be waiting to retrieve her body from the hospital.

The boy had apparently kicked his daughter. A 38-year-old man was arrested for allegedly slapping a six-year-old boy at an indoor playground in Westgate shopping mall on Dec. 22, 2024. The incident The boy's father, 35-year-old Cai (transliteration), told Shin Min Daily News that his wife had taken their son to the playground with a friend that day. Cai's wife was chatting with her friend and didn't notice her son had a dispute with a girl. Not aware of the entire incident, Cai's wife apologised to the girl's father after the latter approached her and launched into a tirade. She subsequently realised that her son was crying and had a red mark on his face. A witness approached Cai's wife and told her that her son had been slapped in the face. According to the witness' account, Cai's son kicked the girl after the latter apparently knocked down a castle that his son was building. After hearing from the witness, Cai's wife went to confront the girl's father, who apparently denied slapping their son. Cai's wife then decided to call the police and sent their son to the hospital for a check up. Although the doctor didn't find any issues with his son, Cai noticed his son had become more reserved and had been having nightmares ever since the incident. "He's slowly recovering, and we hope he can quickly forget this incident," Cai said. Cai felt that it's "common" that kids fight with each other. "The girl's father should talk to the parent if he's not happy, rather than hitting the child," he added. "He may not think he used much force, but he's much bigger-sized than a child," Cai continued. "Even when I discipline my kid, I will usually hit his limbs and will never hit him on the face." Man arrested In response to Mothership's queries, the police confirmed that a six-year-old boy was conveyed conscious to the hospital after he was allegedly slapped by a 38-year-old man at Westgate. The man was subsequently arrested for voluntarily causing hurt with enhanced penalties for offences against a person below 14 years of age. Police investigations are ongoing.
