'Gluten-free' Kitchen Joy shrimp product from Indonesia recalled over 'false and misleading claims' after gluten found in it by SFA

SINGAPORE — Despite packaging claims that it was "gluten-free", gluten was found in Kitchen Joy Crispy Battered Shrimp from Indonesia, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said on Tuesday (30 Jan).

As a precautionary measure, importer CP Foods Singapore has been directed to recall affected batches, with best before dates ranging from 28 to 30 March 2024, said the SFA in a media release. The recall is ongoing.

Consumers who have purchased the implicated products, and are intolerant of or allergic to gluten, should not consume them. Those who have consumed the product should seek medical advice if they have health concerns, the SFA said.

 

For enquiries, consumers may contact their point of purchase.

"Gluten is a type of protein naturally found in wheat and other grains. Gluten does not pose a food safety issue to consumers at large, except for those who are intolerant of or allergic to gluten," the SFA said.

In accordance with Singapore's food regulations, the use of false or misleading claims on prepacked food products, which do not reflect the true nature of their contents, is prohibited.
