The Consumer Council found 25 samples of fish oil supplements in the market tested with different types of contaminants.

The results came from a research report released by the Council today, which tested 25 fish oil supplement products that claim to be able to provide nutrients.

However, all 25 samples were detected with different types of contaminants, of which 24 were found with 3-MCPD that could affect the kidney functions, central nervous system, and male reproductive system.

Among the 24 samples, three had a detected level of contaminants that exceeded the European Union (EU) standard's upper limit.

Besides, 14 samples were detected with the genotoxic carcinogen glycidol, of which one sample named "Adrien Gagnon" had levels of glycidol and 3-MCPD which both exceeded the EU's limit, whereas the same sample's detected levels of the antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene also exceeded the requirements of the Hong Kong regulations.

Approximately 90 percent (22) of the samples were detected with persistent organic pollutants dioxins, dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls, or non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls. One sample of fish oil capsules for pregnant women had the highest detected levels.

Although the detected amounts did not exceed the limit set by the EU, the contaminants are classified as carcinogenic to humans and could persistently exist in the environment.

"The fish oil supplement products claimed to be rich in saturated fatty acids, which could help provide essential nutrients for the body," said the Council.

However, a huge disparity showed in the research among the 25 samples, with the lowest percentage of saturated fatty acids being 1.7 percent and the highest being 35.4 percent.

"These nutrients can also be absorbed through regular diets, such as by consuming seafood," the Council noted, reminding consumers to pay extra heed before purchasing to avoid health risks.
