Illness not covered by insurance, so patient escapes from ward

SUNGAI PETANI: A female patient escaped from a ward at a private hospital yesterday without settling her bills because her health insurance did not cover her treatment expenses.

Following the incident, a nurse from the hospital made a police report.

Kuala Muda District police chief, assistant commissioner Zaidy Che Hassan, said the 32-year-old patient initially registered for treatment at the hospital at 6.40pm yesterday before being warded.

"At 9.30pm the hospital informed the woman that her health insurance could not be used before she refused to continue treatment and wanted to leave the ward.

"The nurse then told the doctor on duty before the ward discharge process was carried out, the patient involved was also asked to settle her bills and take her medicine at the pharmacy," he said when contacted.

According to Zaidy, at 10.40pm the patient was found missing from her ward and did not settle her payment and checked out of the hospital.

"The hospital staff tried to contact her but the patient did not answer the phone call and a police report was made by the nurse.

"The police then contacted the patient but to no avail. They tried to find her at home, however the woman was nowhere to be found as the door was locked," he added.

Zaidy said, initial investigations found that the woman went to the private hospital because she had a stomach ache and said she had insurance when she checked in to the ward.

"The examination found that the patient had gastritis but the insurance company she used claimed that they did not cover the illness the woman suffered from, so she was discharged from the ward.

"We are still conducting further investigations and are tracking the patient," he said.
