SINGAPORE — A man who trespassed into Victoria School claimed that he had slept in a conference room when he was caught by the school’s security officer.

Visen Raj Govindarajoo, 24, who was also a security officer, was fined $1,500 on Wednesday (29 December) after he pleaded guilty to one count of wilful trespass and one count of being drunk in a public place.

Prior to the school incident, a highly intoxicated Visen was walking along Bencoolen Street on 2 April when he smacked the buttock of a 31-year-old woman, who was selecting a drink from a vending machine.

When the woman turned around, she saw Visen walking past in a drunken manner. Her husband had also heard the ‘smacking’ sound and confronted Visen, who claimed that he could have accidentally hit the woman.

The husband called the police, who found that Visen was unable to answer any questions due to his drunken state.

Accused caught by school security officer

In the school incident, a female security officer on duty saw Visen trying to find his way out of the school compound. She approached him to ask why he was in the premises and Visen replied that he had slept in a conference room there.

She reported the incident to a security executive who viewed CCTV footage of the incident, which showed that in the wee hours of 3 July, Visen climbed over the side gate of the school.

Visen was unable to account for his presence there. The executive lodged a police report on 7 July and Visen was later called up by the police for investigations.

In mitigation, Visen said that he committed the offences without realising them. "But I’m not here to justify myself.”

He added that he had been affected by the charges as his passport was kept by the police. As such, he was unable to go home to help his family, whose house has been affected by a flood in Kuala Lumpur.
