Will the smell linger on for days ? I don't wish anyone in the house to know i'm doing smudging.

If you keep your windows open and don't burn too much, it won't linger longer then most smells. Air-con room will be a problem though.

Not sure about palo santo, but white sage is slightly peppery smell and is very distinct if you know what you're smelling.

Usually cone and stick incenses are sawdust mixed with fragrance oils. (I.e. you're burning a lot of other things besides sage). To burn small loose leaves, you need to throw them onto charcoal ember, bundles can be lit directly but produces a LOT of smoke.
