  2. New Delhi: Bhutan has issued a demarche to China over its attempt to declare a Bhutanese wildlife sanctuary along their border as a disputed territory. The demarche was a follow-up to protests earlier against Beijing’s attempt to make a non-dispute into a quarrel, ET has learnt. At the 58th Global Environment Facility Council held recently, the Chinese member raised objections to the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary project and argued that it was in a disputed area between China and Bhutan. 6. Roughly 200,000 Hong Kong citizens are set to move to the UK after Boris Johnson offered them a route to citizenship, according to Foreign Office estimates. The Prime Minister unveiled the measures, for which three million residents Hong Kong are eligible, after China brought in a draconian security law in Hong Kong. The law makes it easier to punish protesters and reduces Hong Kong's autonomy. The Foreign Office has a working estimate that 200,000 people in Hong Kong are likely to take up the British Government’s offer and move to the UK. One source told the Financial Times that the exact number was in a state of "flux", with an average of 180,000 expected. Another said the department predicted that more than 200,000 would move.... https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/07/13/around-200000-hong-kong-citizens-set-move-uk-citizenship-offer/
  7. Coca-Cola (KO) has figured out a way to save its highly profitable fountain soda business from becoming extinct at the germy hands of COVID-19. The solution: QR codes and your smartphone. Coca-Cola said Monday it has made its popular Freestyle soda machine — which could be found at scores of fast-food restaurants such as Wendy’s and McDonald’s and corporate offices — completely contactless. By updating the machine’s software package, a consumer will be able to hold their camera up to the machine’s display which will auto-scan a QR code. That then connects to the cloud and brings the machine’s user interface direct to your smartphone. The drinker then selects from the full menu of options and hits pour. No app download required. “All Coca-Cola beverage dispensers are safe with recommended care and cleaning,” said Coca-Cola Freestyle Vice President and General Manager Chris Hellmann in a statement. “But in these uncertain times, Coca-Cola is providing consumers a new option – a touchless fountain experience. It has been exciting to see our team continue to innovate – mostly from home – to meet the evolving needs of customers and consumers. Our partners are doing everything they can to maintain a safe and hygienic dining environment, and we’re doing all we can to provide options for their guests to continue to pour the beverages they want on a platform they love.” New Coca-Cola Freestyle machine. More Released in 2009, the Coke Freestyle machine in many respects revolutionized fountain soda consumption by using technology to unlock almost endless drink options. In life before COVID-19, one would walk up to the Freestyle machine, select a drink by touching the screen and be on your merry way. But that exercise doesn’t appear feasible for restaurants and businesses as they reopen from the pandemic — touching a public computer screen right now isn’t too different from touching a train station toilet seat. In many restaurants, for instance, the fountain machine remains closed. That has required Coke to figure out a way to reinvent the user experiences so owners of the machines could continue to drive profits. Coke says its software upgrade for the machines —which took only a few weeks — will be pushed out to 10,000 machines later this summer. All of the Freestyle machines will receive the software upgrade by year end.

  11. The Housing and Development Board (HDB) and PUB have responded to a woman's complaints of water supply to her Bedok flat being contaminated and affecting her family's quality of life. Geraldine Tang shared with Stomp the issues been facing since 2015 when she moved into her Design, Build and Sell Scheme (DBSS) flat at Belvia in Bedok Reservoir. Ms Tang, who is in her early 60s, listed them in a Facebook post she published on July 4. Describing the problems as "impossible", she said that her bathrooms are smelly and invaded by "sewage and foul odours" from her neighbours. She shared photos of stains on the walls of her flat and said that their feet itch due to "microbial debris" on the floor. She alleged that the bathrooms turn into "saunas" when her neighbours take hot showers and that they have a "hot toilet bowl" because heat rises from there. She also shared that there is "bacteria" in her tap water making it unusable and that her family fear suffering skin and urinary infections from contact with the water. To "survive", she said the family buys 20 to 30 bottles of water for drinking, cooking and rewashing themselves in case they come in contact with any bacteria. The PUB responded to Ms Tang's post in a statement on its Facebook page on July 14 at 12pm. In the statement, PUB said it has been attending to the resident's feedback on water issues at three different residences since 2013. PUB said they have collected water samples for testing each time and found that the water quality is satisfactory and safe for drinking. It also found no service pipe leak within her premises. Read the PUB's full statement below: The HDB released a statement shortly after PUB's saying it is aware of the online discussions regarding Ms Tang's post. The statement said Ms Tang's allegations that government agencies did not take action to address the issues within her flat are untrue. "Multiple site inspections have been carried out since Ms Tang first reported her issues in 2015," the statement said. "The investigations revealed no defects in the sewage system or other areas, which could possibly cause the alleged foul smell within the flat." "PUB had also tested water samples from her flat, which showed that the water is safe for drinking." HDB added an Indoor Air Quality specialist reported the windows and doors in the flat were constantly closed resulting in poor ventilation as well as high temperature and humidity within the flat. Multiple cleaning chemicals were also found to have been used to disinfect the floor and walls of the flat. The specialist concluded the microbial growth within the flat is likely a result of the poor ventilation and excessive washing over time. "Ms Tang, however, did not heed the advice of the specialist to ventilate the flat," the HDB said. The agency added they have not received any similar feedback from other residents in Ms Tang's precinct.
  12. Former MythBusters host Grant Imahara has died suddenly at the age of 49. No cause of death has been released. The Discovery Channel has released a statement, saying they are shocked and devastated by the sudden death. "We are heartbroken to hear this sad news about Grant. He was an important part of our Discovery family and a really wonderful man. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family," the statement said. Grant, who was electrical engineer and roboticist, joined Mythbusters in the show's third season and stayed until 2014. The 49-year-old's MythBusters colleague, Adam Savage, has posted on social media about his heartache over the news. "I'm at a loss," he wrote. "No words. I've been part of two big families with Grant Imahara over the last 22 years. Grant was a truly brilliant engineer, artist and performer, but also just such a generous, easygoing, and gentle PERSON. Working with Grant was so much fun. I'll miss my friend." https://www.ladbible.com/news/celebrity-former-mythbusters-host-grant-imahara-dies-suddenly-at-49-20200714
  13. SINGAPORE - Singapore's economy shrank by 12.6 per cent year on year in the second quarter, according to advance estimates from the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) on Tuesday (July 14), as circuit breaker measures to stem the coronavirus pandemic took its toll. The decline in gross domestic product (GDP) is worse than the 11.3 per cent drop economists had anticipated in a Bloomberg survey. It is also much worse than the first quarter when GDP turned negative for the first time in a decade with the economy contracting by 0.7 per cent. MTI said the GDP plunge was due to the circuit breaker measures that were implemented from April 7 to June 1 to slow the spread of Covid-19, as well as weak external demand amidst a global economic downturn. On a quarter on quarter basis, the economy shrank a record 41.2 per cent in the three months to June - entering a technical recession for the first time since 2009. A technical recession refers to two straight quarters of quarter-on-quarter contraction. MTI's full-year forecast stood at a 7 to 4 per cent contraction - which would be Singapore's worst-ever recession since independence in 1965. The ministry in May had forecast a full-year contraction of 7 to 4 per cent - making the current recession Singapore’s worst-ever since independence in 1965. The second quarter slump was led by the construction sector that shrank by 54.7 per cent on a year on year basis, a significant deterioration from the 1.1 per cent decline in the first quarter. “Construction output weakened on account of the circuit breaker measures which led to a stoppage of most construction activities during the period, as well as manpower disruptions arising from additional measures to curb the spread of Covid-19, including movement restrictions at foreign worker dormitories,” MTI said. On a quarter on quarter basis, the construction sector shrank by 95.6 per cent in the second quarter, far worse than the 12.2 per cent contraction in the first three months. The services producing industries contracted by 13.6 per cent on a year-on-year basis in the second quarter, steeper than the 2.4 per cent decline in the previous quarter. The only bright spot in the economy was the manufacturing sector that grew by 2.5 per cent year on year in the April-June period. However, the growth was slower than the 8.2 per cent pace achieved in the first quarter. Manufacturing growth during in the second quarter was primarily aided by a surge in biomedical manufacturing. Still, weak external demand and workplace disruptions during the circuit breaker period weighed on output in the chemicals, transport engineering and general manufacturing clusters, MTI said. On a quarter on quarter basis, the manufacturing sector shrank by 23.1 per cent, a sharp reversal from the 45.5 per cent expansion in the preceding quarter. The advance estimates for the second quarter are largely based on data from April and May, coinciding with the two-month long circuit breaker measures. Singapore started to relax the circuit breaker measures on June 1 and entered phase two of economic reopening on June 19, allowing most retail shops and restaurants to resume business while observing social distancing. Revised second quarter estimates - to be released in August - are likely to reflect the impact of the reopening. https://www.straitstimes.com/business/economy/singapore-gdp-plunges-126-in-q2-worse-than-expected-flash-data

  19. The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) is taking enforcement action against a mookata restaurant at Golden Mile Complex after a customer spotted cockroaches crawling all over a drinks dispenser machine. Stomper Noelle told Stomp she visited Y Cube Mookata Buffet for dinner on July 3 and was horrified with what she saw. "I noticed the drinks dispenser was crawling with tiny and large cockroaches," she said. "I tried to inform the manager about it but he said that the machine was not operated for a long time during the circuit breaker. "So he means they didn't bother to clean or wipe the sticky stuff off of the machine during the whole circuit breaker? "What kind of hygiene practice is this?" Noelle said the manager was about to walk away because the restaurant was busy but she asked him if he expected her to kill the cockroaches for him. "A staff member took a piece of tissue and killed a cockroach without disinfecting the area afterwards. "I wanted to brush it off and continue with dinner but there were more cockroaches crawling out and I called for the manager again and he asked if I wanted to move the table away from the drinks dispenser. "I would have really appreciated it if he had changed my seats or removed the entire machine but he continued to ignore me afterwards. "I really hope the restaurant owner does something about this." In response to a Stomp query, the SFA it had carried out an inspection after receiving feedback. An SFA spokesman told Stomp: "Under the Environmental Public Health (Food Hygiene) Regulations, operators of SFA-licensed premises are to ensure that the premises is free of infestation by rodents, cockroaches or other vermin. "SFA conducts regular inspections of SFA-licensed food establishments to ensure compliance with our regulations, and will not hesitate to take enforcement action if necessary. "SFA inspected the food establishment upon receiving feedback. "We are taking enforcement action against the operator for the hygiene lapses detected. "We have also directed the operator to activate their pest control operator and to rectify the lapses detected. "Food safety is a joint responsibility. "While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices." SFA advised members of the public who come across any potentially errant food operator to report them to SFA via the online feedback form (www.sfa.gov.sg/feedback). As part of the enquiry and gathering of evidence, SFA may engage the feedback provider for more details. "SFA will not hesitate to take enforcement action against errant food operators if we have obtained sufficient evidence," the agency said.
