  8. This much durian - "the world's stinkiest fruit" - made a Chinese police officer fail a breathalyser A man in China has failed an on-the-spot breathalyser test after eating too much durian fruit. According to Chinese video website Pear Video, an unnamed man in Rudong county, in the eastern province of Jiangsu, was pulled over by the police on 17 April for suspected drink-driving. He failed his breathalyser test, but was filmed by police protesting: "I've just eaten durian fruit!" A follow-up blood test proved that there was no alcohol in his system, putting the man in the clear. But it also prompted local police to subsequently carry out tests themselves, to check the legitimacy of the man's claims. A big stink In a 29 April investigation, Pear Video showed a police officer being breathalysed after eating some of the stinky fruit, and confirmed that his alcohol level directly after eating durian was 36mg per 100ml. The legal limit for blood alcohol concentration in China is 0.02% - roughly 20mg per 100ml. Officers carried out tests and failed breathalysers immediately after eating durian Three minutes after taking the test, police officer Yu Pengxiang was retested and the breathalyser showed a negative result. Pear Video subsequently warned users against eating the fruit while driving, along with other products that might show a positive result, including certain brands of mouthwash and lychee. Waste of 'innocent people's time' Durian is banned in many hotels, subways and airports across Southeast Asia Pear Video's report has triggered thousands of comments on Chinese social media, with many surprised, but also concerned. Some on the popular Sina Weibo microblog are calling on the police to apologise to the interrogated man. Others are asking for improvements in the carrying out of breathalyser tests. "Do you have to waste innocent people's time, frighten them and then stick a needle in them to eliminate suspicion?" one user asks. Some are also voicing incredulity that the driver could tolerate eating durian anyway in a confined space, given its notoriously pungent smell. There are also complaints online that the police might be relying on outdated equipment, rather than trusting their noses. This is not the first time that breathalysers have come under scrutiny for showing positive results for non-alcoholic products. In January, an Australian lorry driver went viral with a video showing that eating a hot cross bun could generate a positive reading.
  9. A man who has been playing a single continuous game of Minecraft for the past five years says he is devastated to have been finally "killed". Phil Watson, 31, of Newcastle, had been playing in the most difficult Hardcore mode, which means his character cannot be brought back to life. Having walked 6,316km, flown 7,798km and jumped 732,389 times, he had got "a bit full of myself" and been startled by a zombie baby and eaten by a spider. He says the five-year game is a record. "It was never about being the best or the longest, I just liked playing it and managed to survive," he told BBC News. "I started saying I was the world's longest Hardcore survivor because I couldn't find anyone else. "We couldn't find anyone who had lasted more than a couple of months." Mr Watson plays Minecraft most days, averaging about 20 hours a week. For those familiar with Minecraft, Mr Watson's character was attacked by a zombie baby wearing enchanted armour. He ran away from it and was shot in the back by a hidden skeleton, which knocked him into the spider. He could have survived all of this if he had eaten a health-giving golden apple sooner, he said. "I ran out of luck," Mr Watson said. "There's so much I could have done, I felt stupid making such an easy mistake." Phil Watson and his fiancee, Kristin Rosales Mr Watson has more than 3,500 followers on YouTube and nearly 2,000 on game-streaming platform Twitch, where he is known as Philza and met his fiancee, Kristin Rosales. And he is already is thinking about returning to Minecraft. "When it first happened I was so depressed I thought I didn't even want to look at Minecraft right now, I didn't ever want to see a zombie again," he said. "But I'm starting to get that urge to create something and go on another journey."
  10. The king is seen pouring sacred water on the head of Queen Suthida The king of Thailand has married the deputy head of his personal security detail, and given her the title of queen, a royal statement said. The surprise announcement comes before his elaborate coronation ceremonies begin on Saturday, when his position is consecrated. King Maha Vajiralongkorn, 66, became the constitutional monarch after the death of his much-loved father in 2016. He has been married and divorced three times before and has seven children. A royal statement said: King Vajiralongkorn "has decided to promote General Suthida Vajiralongkorn Na Ayudhya, his royal consort, to become Queen Suthida and she will hold royal title and status as part of the royal family". Queen Suthida is King Vajiralongkorn's long-term partner and has been seen with him in public for many years, though their relationship has never before been officially acknowledged. Queen Suthida was made a general in 2016 Footage from the wedding ceremony was shown on Thai TV channels late Wednesday, showing other members of the royal family and palace advisers in attendance. The king is seen pouring sacred water on the head of Queen Suthida. The couple then sign a marriage registry. In 2014 Vajiralongkorn appointed Suthida Tidjai, a former flight attendant for Thai Airways, as the deputy commander of his bodyguard unit. He made her a full general in the army in December 2016. The previous king, Bhumibol Adulyadej, ruled for 70 years, making him the longest-reigning monarch in the world when he died in 2016.

  19. SINGAPORE: Fans of McDonald’s Nasi Lemak Burger rejoice – the fast food chain is bringing back its special menu inspired by local flavours, ahead of Ramadan. The popular burger will be available from Thursday (Apr 25) at all McDonald’s outlets, along with the Banana Pie, Chendol McFlurry and Chendol Soft Serve. The Nasi Lemak Burger was so popular it sold out in two weeks when it was first launched in July 2017 to celebrate National Day. It consists of a coconut-flavoured chicken thigh patty, a fried egg, caramelised onions and cucumber slices topped with sambal sauce. In a media release on Wednesday, McDonald’s Singapore said the burger will return with "the same good old recipe".
