  2. Jacqueline Wong is not catching a break. TVB has decided to re-shoot the scenes with Wong in them. This is for the upcoming drama Forensic Heroes IV, Ming Pao Daily Newsreported. This comes after Wong was caught canoodling in a taxi’s backseat with Andy Hui, 51, husband of singer/ actress Sammi Cheng, 46. At the time, 30-year-old Wong was dating fellow actor Kenneth Ma, 45. Labour intensive process The move will cost the TV station about HK$10 million, or S$1.73 million. As Wong was one of the leads, re-shooting will involve at least 50 scenes. However, according to 8 Days, the affected celebrities, including Raymond Wong, Selena Lee, and Shaun Tam are receptive to working on the project again. Ming Pao reported that the production team is currently amending the script, in addition to being in talks with the celebrities. Besides that, the team also has to reconstruct certain sets, look for other locations, apply to close off the relevant street or streets for filming, and pick out a new actress. The re-shoot will commence in June. Not in touch with Wong Ming Pao also disclosed that the show’s producer is currently not in touch with Wong. However, regarding Wong, the producer said: “She [Wong] was very obedient on set, was punctual and had her lines memorised, no one wanted this to happen either. I am currently not in touch with her, but I believe that she is going though a difficult time. Actually I feel like asking after her, but it’s not a good time now.” Not sitting well with Chinese authorities One of the reasons for the re-shoot appears to be the Chinese authorities, The Straits Times reported. As the show is set to air in China and Hong Kong in November, the Chinese authorities are reportedly not too keen to approve a show that features an actress embroiled in a cheating scandal. 8 Days added that the show’s producer had considered digitally altering Wong’s face — a suggestion allegedly made by Chinese investors — but ultimately felt “uncomfortable” with the idea.

  5. A Malaysian doctor working in Australia has been suspended after his online hate comments that were highly unbecoming of a life-saving medical professional came to light. Professional misconduct The Medical Board of Australia found that Christopher Lee Kwan Chen had repeatedly posted comments on Singapore’s Hardwarezone forum that were racist, sexist and violent — actions that amounted to professional misconduct. He has been suspended as the board also learned that he had repeatedly posted images and information that identified him as a medical practitioner in Australia. Lee was working in Tasmania and Victoria. He has been suspended for six weeks and asked to take a course on ethical behaviour online. Petition launched Following the news of Lee’s activities, an online petition was launched that called for Lee’s medical license to be revoked. A woman named Justine Brooks, who identified herself as the CEO of Laurel House, a sexual assault support service, said she felt “compelled” to “challenge” Lee’s right to practice medicine in Australia after finding out about his comments. The petition, which was started on Change.org on April 25, has accumulated over 5,000 signatures from supporters as of May 2. Here are some of the reasons given by supporters for signing the petition: Still active Despite his suspension, Lee has appeared defiant. He was not banned from Hardwarezone forum, and he did not quit his activities but continued to post there. According to The Guardian, Lee posted after his suspension ruling, saying: “We’ll see who has the last laugh.” He also refused to delete his account. Victorian Health Minister commented Lee’s case has garnered significant attention, with the Australian authorities weighing in. According to ABC Australia, a spokesperson for Victoria Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said she had asked the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) if the suspension was adequate. “This behaviour is appalling and has no place in Victoria, let alone in our hospitals,” the spokesperson said. Extreme comments Lee’s offensive and extreme comments have been documented by numerous media outlets in Singapore and overseas. After Indonesia was hit by a natural disaster, Lee wrote: “Don’t bother helping that nation of ingrates.” Of his wife, Lee wrote: “If my marriage fell apart, it would not end in divorce. It would end in murder.” Another time he wrote that if his wife were to become pregnant, he would force her to have an abortion by kicking “her down the stairs”. When Lee was criticised online by a woman, he supposedly posted nude pictures of her on the internet. When she was forced to close her social media accounts, Lee exulted that a “new legion of perverts” could now view her images. “I won,” he wrote.
  6. As accessories get smaller, they tend to go missing more easily. A Taiwanese man thought he lost one side of his AirPods, but later found it in the least expected of places — inside his body. Here’s what happened. Man swallowed AirPod in his sleep A man from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, with the surname Hsu, put on his AirPods while using his phone before retiring for the night on April 23, 2019. However, he forgot to remove his AirPods before falling asleep. When he woke up the next day, he found that one of his AirPods, from the right ear, was missing. He then used his iPhone to locate his missing AirPod and only did he realise that he accidentally swallowed it as the beeping sound came from his stomach. Removed AirPod from the body As a result, he quickly went to the hospital for help. The doctor asked Hsu to turn on the music, but as the AirPod might have run out of battery, they could not hear it emanating from within him. However, they could still detect the AirPod in Hsu’s body using Bluetooth tracking. The doctor said the plastic cover on the AirPod reduced the health hazard that it could possibly impose on Hsu — such as having it dissolve by his gut fluids. Hsu subsequently managed to take a big dump after consuming some laxatives and egested the AirPod. From the video, he took out an object from his faeces, which was indeed his AirPod. Hsu also revealed that he cleaned the AirPod afterwards and both sides still functioned normally. He will continue using them. You can watch the interview about this incident here:
  7. Most of you might have caught Avengers:Endgame by now. The movie, more than a decade in the making, featured the characters many have come to know and love. In fact it is hard to think of better casting choices than Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, or Chris Hemsworth as Thor, or Chris Evans as Captain America. But say there were to be a recast, and for some reason, the new Avengers team had to be selected from a Southeast Asian country with ridiculous humidity. Then what? Well, Francis Tan came up with a comprehensive list of Singaporean alternatives. Here they are. Iron Man (Christopher Lee) Captain America (Edmund Chen) Black Widow (Fiona Xie) Thor (Bobby Tonelli) Hawkeye (Chen Tianwen) Doctor Strange (Brandon Wong) Spiderman (Ian Fang) Captain Marvel (Ann Kok) Black Panther (Taufik Batisah) The Hulk (Zheng Geping) Scarlet Witch (Priscelia Chan) Winter Soldier (Qi Yuwu) Rocket the Raccoon (Marcus Chin) Starlord (Romeo Tan) Ant Man (Guo Liang) This is the best. Marvel, please recast. Thanos (Richard Low) Last one best, others can debate.
  8. A lock of what Italian experts believe is Leonardo da Vinci's hair are being displayed at the "Leonardo Lives" exhibition marking the 500th anniversary of the death of the Renaissance artist. (Photo: AFP/Vincenzo PINTO) VINCI, Italy: A lock of what some historians think is Leonardo da Vinci's hair went on display Thursday (May 2) at a museum in his Tuscan birthplace as they seek to prove it contains his DNA 500 years after the genius died. Presenting what he called a "relic" at the Leonardo library in Vinci devoted to the painter and Renaissance giant, art historian Alessandro Vezzosi told AFP how the whitish-blond hairs emerged from the shadows. "This lock remained secret for a long time before we discovered it three years ago in the United States," he said. "It will allow us to do DNA research on Leonardo," Vezzosi added. "After studying Da Vinci's genaeology for 40 years, in 2016 we presented 35 living descendants of the master, and a short time later I was contacted by the collector who owns it and who agreed to show it." Leonardo da Vinci was born April 15, 1452, in Vinci, northwest of Florence, the illegitimate son of a wealthy landowner and a teenaged peasant. He died May 2, 1519, in Amboise, central France, where he had lived as the guest of King Francis I. Leonardo had no children but he had a dozen half-siblings on his father's side and several more on his mother's side. Less than a decade later, Leonardo's patron left the Loire Valley for Paris and Fontainebleau. Although the chateau would again become a royal seat, it gradually fell into decline. Vezzosi chose the symbolic 500th anniversary of his death to present the lock of hair as part of the "Leonardo Lives" exhibition curated with Agnese Sabato. The lock is accompanied by a notice reading "The hair of Leonardo da Vinci" in French, along with a bronze ring that documents describe as having been worn by the Florentine genius. LIVING DESCENDANTS "We are not 100 per cent sure it is his hair, we are saying it is possible through genaeological research to compare the genetic material's DNA with that of Leonardo's living descendants who have been found in Tuscany," Vezzosi said. Other comparisons are to be made with material recovered from tombs in France and Spain, the Renaissance specialist added. Eike Schmidt of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence doubts the hair is authentic, however. "No specialist thinks so, and it is extremely unlikely that a lock of Leonardo's hair could wind up in an American collection," he told Italian media on Thursday. "The tradition of collecting locks of famous people's hair dates from the Romantic period, in the 19th century," Schmidt said. Vezzosi said it was known that the relics presented in Vinci belonged to French writer Arsene Houssaye, a museum director who discovered a stone coffin during an excavation in 1863 at Amboise's royal chateau in the Loire Valley. Inside he found a skeleton whose right hand was placed behind its head along with stone fragments on which were inscribed -EO -AR -DUS -VINC- and French and Italian medals that dated from early in the reign of Francois I. There were also a few bits of a beard, and white hairs. Leonardo spent the last three years of his life in France at the invitation of the French king, a patron of the arts keen to support the Italian master's vast talents. The Renaissance master died at the age of 67 and according to the terms of his will, was buried at the chateau's chapel, which was destroyed in 1807 - with authorities apparently unaware that Leonardo was buried there. The unidentified bones turned up during Houssaye's excavation and were interred in 1874 at chapel of Saint Hubert, with plaques in French and Italian stating they are the "presumed remains" of the Renaissance master. Those remains are to be left untroubled now as experts try to determine if the hair is genuine, because disturbing them "might be seen as a profanation", Vezzosi said. "With the living descendants and tombs of descendants we are able to make comparisons without troubling the tomb (of Leonardo) which is a site of historical and symbolic signification to be respected," the historian said. He plans to present the results of his research within a few months.
  9. Italian President Sergio Mattarella (left) and French President Emmanuel Macron laid flowers on the grave of Leonardo da Vinci. (Photo: AFP/PHILIPPE WOJAZER) AMBOISE, France: President Emmanuel Macron and Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella on Thursday (May 2) kicked off commemorations to mark 500 years since Leonardo da Vinci died in France, paying their respects to the Renaissance genius in a private visit to his grave. The sleepy town of Amboise on the Loire River - where Leonardo died in 1519 at the age of 67 - was in virtual lockdown because of fears of protests by France's grassroots "yellow vest" movement. Traffic in the town of just 13,000 was banned within a five-kilometre (three-mile) radius and the usually teeming restaurants and shops shuttered. On Wednesday, dozens of cars were towed away, with some foreign owners apparently unaware of the draconian security measures. The presidential helicopter had arrived on a river island in the heart of the town, touching down on a pad usually used to launch hot-air balloons over the chateau-studded valley. After the visit to Leonardo's grave, Macron and Mattarella headed for lunch at the nearby Clos Luce, the sumptuous manor house where Leonardo lived and died under the patronage of King Francis I. Leonardo da Vinci spent his last three years living in the Clos Luce in the Loire Valley town of Amboise which is marking 500 years since his death. (Photo: AFP/ALAIN JOCARD) Later they planned to visit the sprawling chateau of Chambord - whose central double-helix staircase is attributed to Leonardo though the first stone was not laid until four months after his death. Among glitterati attending the events will be Italian star architect Renzo Piano and French astronaut Thomas Pesquet. The joint celebrations come after months of mounting diplomatic tensions between Paris and Rome over the hardline policies of Italy's populist government and its support for France's anti-government "yellow vest" protesters. In the worst diplomatic crisis between the two countries since World War II, Paris briefly recalled its ambassador from Rome. Mattarella, staunchly pro-EU like Macron, played an "essential role" in lowering tensions, Macron's office said. 'ARCHITECT OF THE KING' Francis I, known as the "Sun King of the 16th century", is widely credited with bringing the Renaissance to France, even if his predecessor Louis XII had begun the process by bringing in architects and artisans from Florence, Milan and Rome. Leonardo was 64 when he accepted the young Francis I's invitation to Amboise, at a time when rivals Michelangelo and Raphael were rising stars. With Leonardo's commissions drying up, it came as a great relief and no small vindication for the Tuscan artist, who received a handsome stipend as the "first painter, engineer and architect of the king". The grave of Italian renaissance painter and scientist Leonardo da Vinci is located at the Chateau d'Amboise. (Photo: AFP/PHILIPPE WOJAZER) At the time, Francis I was barely 23, and his ambitious mother Louise of Savoy "knew that Leonardo would be the man who would allow her son to flourish", Catherine Simon Marion, managing director of the Clos Luce, told AFP. Leonardo brought with him three of his favourite paintings: the Mona Lisa, the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, and Saint John the Baptist - all of which today hang in the Louvre museum in Paris. Italy and France have also sparred over an accord under which Italy will lend several Leonardos to the Louvre in October. With fewer than 20 Leonardo paintings still in existence, many Italians are resentful that the Louvre possesses five of them, as well as 22 drawings. (Photo: AFP/Marco Bertorello) During his three years in Amboise, Leonardo organised lavish parties for the court and worked to design an ideal city for Francis at nearby Romorantin - one of the polymath's many unrealised projects - all while continuing his research. Macron is the first French president to visit the town since Charles de Gaulle came in 1959. Emmanuel Honnet, who runs the Cafe des Arts snack bar by the chateau, said the precautions were "understandable... given the terrible social climate and the real terrorist risk". But the 51-year-old vented "frustration" that the townspeople were largely sidelined. "It should be the memory of a lifetime," he said.
  10. The baby had been left by the side of the road. (Photo: Bernama) LANGKAWI: A dead baby surrounded by maggots was found in a black rubbish bag on Thursday (May 2) in a town in Langkawi, Malaysia. A villager discovered the bag by the side of a road in Kampung Dato Syed Nahar, Kuah, after detecting a foul smell. It is likely that the bag had been lying there for three to four days, Bernama reported. “The person opened the bag and discovered something resembling a baby in shape inside and infested with maggots. The police were alerted thereafter,” Langkawi district police chief Supt Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said in a statement. The state of decomposition made it impossible to determine the baby's gender, identity or age. A postmortem will be done at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Setar on Friday, the district police chief added.
  11. No Signboard plans to use the IPO proceeds to develop the company's beer business, establish a new chain of casual dining restaurants and expand its ready meal business. (Photo: Facebook/No Signboard Esplanade) SINGAPORE: No Signboard Holdings said on Thursday (May 2) that its chief executive officer Lim Yong Sim was arrested earlier this week by local authorities and has been released on bail. The arrest on Apr 30 was made on “reasonable suspicion” that sections of the Securities and Futures Act on false trading, market-rigging transactions and insider trading “may have been breached”, the Catalist-listed seafood restaurant operator said in a filing to the Singapore Exchange (SGX). Mr Lim has not been charged for any offence, the company filing added. The restaurant chain, known for its signature white pepper crab dish, is being investigated by the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) for an abortive share buyback dated Jan 31. According to earlier SGX filings, Mr Lim had on Jan 31 instructed the company’s broker, UOB Kay Hian, to queue for the purchase of the company’s own shares at a price of up to S$0.14, after getting approval from shareholders at the annual general meeting held on the same day. This price exceeded the regulatory limit on share buyback prices and saw the company’s stock surged nearly 24 per cent, prompting a query from SGX. In its reply to the bourse operator on Feb 3, No Signboard explained that the move was “an honest mistake on the part of Mr Lim as he did not notice that the share purchase at prices of up to S$0.14 exceeded the 5 per cent cap above the average closing price of the last five days permitted under the share buyback mandate of S$0.1226 as at Jan 31, 2019”. The share purchase was also done during a “black-out period” – a restriction period for dealing in the company’s securities – as No Signboard had not held audit committee and board meetings to approve its first-quarter results. “In light of the above, the share purchase has inadvertently resulted in two breaches … dealing in the shares of the company during the black-out period and the purchase of shares at a price which exceeded the share price cap,” the company had said. Subsequently on Apr 29, No Signboard said it was requested by the CAD to assist in investigations. From Apr 24 to 26, it provided the CAD with access to and copies of documents in connection with the abortive share buyback. No files, records or equipment belonging to the company were seized, it added. CAD also obtained statements from the company’s CEO and chief financial officer Voon Sze Yin. The former had his passport retained by the CAD – a move that the company described as a requirement during investigations. In the latest filing on Thursday, the company clarified that copies of the documents in connection with the abortive share buyback were provided to the CAD pursuant to Section 35 of the Criminal Procedure Code. “The board would like to reiterate that the business and operations of the company will not be affected and will continue as usual,” it said. “The company will continue to cooperate fully with the CAD in the investigations.” Shares of No Signboard on the secondary Catalist board were last seen 2.4 per cent lower at S$0.083 on Thursday afternoon.
  12. SINGAPORE: A 35-year-old former teacher from international school UWCSEA is on trial for molesting his colleague’s wife after a social event held by the school. Benjamin James Henry, a British national, is accused of running his hand down the 53-year-old woman’s back, to her waist and her buttock on Jun 17, 2017 at the Singapore Cricket Club where the event was held. On the opening day of the trial on Thursday (May 2), the victim, who cannot be named due to a court order, took the stand and described in detail her version of what happened that night. She attended the event with her husband who at the time was a teacher at UWC, the court heard. There was a live band, dancing and drinks at the event, and she had spritzers and danced with her husband in the “salsa style”, she said. They stayed until the band packed up, which she assumed was after midnight. As they were walking out together, her husband was saying goodbye to people who were passing by when she felt a hand on her back. At that point and after, as the hand travelled down her back to her waist, she said she assumed it was a friend waiting to say bye. Still, she was shocked, she said. “I was thinking ‘who is this person who is feeling so comfortable and tactile with me?’” she said. It was only when the hand reached her buttock and stayed there for one to two seconds, that she grabbed the wrist of the person who had touched her and turned to face him, she said. She added that the entire incident lasted about six seconds. She did not recognise the person whose wrist she had grabbed, so she asked him a series of questions to ascertain if he was a teacher or a guest, she said. He did not respond immediately, but suddenly, he said: “Get real, I’m gay." He then removed his hand from her grasp “aggressively” and stormed off, she said. Breaking down on the stand, she said: “At that point, I couldn’t understand why he did that and I couldn’t understand his response. It didn’t make sense to me.” Her husband, who had stopped walking when she stopped, saw her grab Henry’s wrist, she said. She did not see where Henry headed, but was soon approached by someone who the victim and her husband found out was Henry’s friend. They confirmed through him that Henry is gay. What followed was about an hour of being doubted by others who had stopped to find out what happened, the victim said. Among those who did not believe her were close friends, she added. People also asked her if she had gotten the wrong person. One woman said of Henry: “I know who he is. He’s a really lovely lad. It couldn’t have happened.” She asked the victim if she would accept an apology, and she said yes. The friend then approached Henry. However, he said he did not do it, and that he was not going to apologise. SHE FELT VIOLATED, STRIPPED OF HER DIGNITY The victim said that all she wanted was an apology and Henry’s acknowledgement that he molested her, which she did not get. She and her husband eventually left the club. When Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicholas Lai asked her how she felt after the incident, she said: “I felt violated. I was stripped of my dignity." She also said that she felt physically, emotionally and mentally abused by Henry’s touch, response and aggression. At some point after the incident, her husband received an email from Henry saying that if the incident happened, it was accidental. He also said that they could meet to talk. They set up a meeting with a UWC counsellor, but nothing was resolved. About six months after the incident, the victim reported it to the police. She also said that UWC did not record the incident formally. When asked why she took so long to report it, she said she did not want to put Henry in the hands of the law and potentially ruin his life and career as a teacher. In cross-examining her, however, Henry’s lawyer Raji Ramason put it to her that she did not go to the police earlier because she was not certain that the incident happened intentionally or knowingly. He also put to her that she had been drinking and was unsteady, and that her judgment was impaired. The victim disagreed to these. “I wanted to give him a chance to apologise so the matter doesn’t blow up,” she said. The victim said she was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and is unable to sleep. She is currently on anxiety medication and takes sleeping pills, she said. When she does sleep, she has nightmares of her friends dying, she added.
  13. Police officers on patrol in Singapore. (File photo) SINGAPORE: Four teenagers will be charged on Friday (May 3) after being suspected of posing as police officers to steal cash from two victims. Police were alerted to the incident at around 6.30am on Wednesday that four teenagers had identified themselves as police officers to two members of the public along Sentosa Boardwalk. The four men, all aged 17, had purportedly asked the two victims for their wallets to check their identities. About S$390 in cash was missing when the wallets were returned to the victims. When confronted by the victims, the four teenagers fled the scene. They were arrested on Wednesday and will be charged in court on Friday, police said. One teen will be charged with impersonating a public servant and the other three will be charged with abetment of the said offence. All four will also be charged with an additional offence of theft with common intention. "The police would like to remind the public to be vigilant and wary of persons who may impersonate as police officers to facilitate the commission of their criminal acts," Singapore Police Force said in a statement on Thursday. "If in doubt, they should request for the police officer’s warrant card to verify his identity before complying with the instructions of the officer." A genuine warrant card will have features such as the police crest, the officer’s photo, his name and NRIC number. When the card is tilted at an angle, the holographic word "POLICE" will appear under the officer’s photograph. The teenagers face up to two-years' jail and a fine if they are convicted of impersonating a public servant and abetment. Anyone convicted of theft is liable for a jail term of up to three years and a fine.
  14. 'Monty Python' died just weeks after it was found Wildlife authorities have shared photos of a three-eyed snake that was found on a highway in northern Australia. The Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Service described the discovery, which was widely shared online, as "peculiar". Nicknamed Monty Python, the baby carpet python died just weeks after it was found in March. Experts said the snake's third eye, on top of its head, appeared to be a natural mutation. Rangers discovered it near the town of Humpty Doo, 40km (25 miles) south-east of Darwin. The 40cm-long (15 inch) reptile had been struggling to eat due to its deformity, officials told the BBC. 'Natural' case The wildlife service said X-ray scans had showed that the snake did not have two heads formed together. "Rather it appeared to be one skull with an additional eye socket and three functioning eyes," it said on Facebook. The reptile had been struggling to eat due to its deformity Snake expert Prof Bryan Fry said mutations were a natural part of evolution. "Every baby has a mutation of some sort - this one is just particularly coarse and misshapen," said Prof Fry, from the University of Queensland. "I haven't seen a three-eyed snake before, but we have a two-headed carpet python in our lab - it's just a different kind of mutation like what we see with Siamese twins." He suggested that the snake's third eye may have been "the last little bit of a twin that's been absorbed".
