More than 10,000 people have voted in our exclusive poll asking who should be the next King, and the results will stun the heir to the throne.

The mass of voters were asked if they think the Prince of Wales, 70, should still be the next King – as planned – when the Queen dies.

Alternatively, they were asked if they thought his son Prince William should skip his dad to the throne – or neither of them at all and that the UK should become a republic.

The results have proved to be a landslide, with an overwhelming majority saying William should leapfrog his dad to the throne.

Only a minority want heir Charles to be Monarch when Her Maj dies, despite the Duke of Cornwall’s growing popularity in recent years.

The results of the poll – which closed on Wednesday – revealed William was backed by a stunning 68% of 10,400 readers (7,072) to be the next King, compared to just 23% (2,392) who want Charles to take the top role.

Meanwhile just 9% (927) want "none of them (to become King), we should become a republic".

Charlie Proctor, editor of Royal Central, told Daily Star Online how he “finds the results of this poll disappointing but not surprising”.

He reckons the distaste over Charles is down to the infamous break down of his and Princess Diana’s marriage, but thinks “people should forget what happened 35 years ago”.

He said: “Monarchy is not the X Factor. You don’t vote for who you want to be King or who fails to make it past the judges’ houses. It is not a popularity contest, and Charles will take to the throne come what may.

“A lot of people will be against Charles becoming King because they have bygone chips on their shoulders, often relating to Princess Diana.

“People should forget the events of 35 years ago and concentrate on now. Charles will make an excellent King, and Camilla will make an excellent Queen.

“Likewise, in a couple of decades or so, when he has a little bit more experience, I’m sure Prince William will make a brilliant monarch. We shouldn’t be advocating that the Duke of Cambridge leapfrogs his father to the throne.”

Despite the landslide results, the thousands of William backers will have to wait a little longer for their man as Charles ups his preparations to be King.

Although Daily Star Online recently revealed how Prince William is holding secret meetings to take over his dad’s major role.
