SINGAPORE: Visitors to the Singapore Aviation Academy (SAA) Open House will be able to get a glimpse into the training for air traffic controllers and airport firefighters.

Alongside these two free guided experiences, members of the public can also participate in a range of interactive games, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) said on Monday (Mar 4).

The three-day event held by the training arm of CAAS, themed "discover, experience and play", will run from Mar 7 to Mar 9. It will be open to visitors from 9am to 5pm at 1 Aviation Drive.

PRE-REGISTER ONLINE

The Air Traffic Control Simulator guided experience will give visitors insight into the vital role played by the School of Air Traffic Services.

"Visitors can also step into our specialised tabletop and 360° Aerodrome simulator for unique day and night views from the 'control tower'," said CAAS.

The second guided experience gives the public a look at the training of airport firefighters through hands-on activities and simulators. This includes target shooting, breathing apparatus simulator and an airport foam tender fire vehicle static display.

As there are limited slots, CAAS said visitors will need to pre-register online to secure their preferred sessions. Walk-ins will only be considered based on availability.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES

Apart from the guided experiences, the open house will also feature a range of interactive games and activities.

These include a children’s activity corner, an air traffic control plane landing challenge, indoor drones and a LEGO table with a ramp to test drive the LEGO fire engine that visitors have built.

Members of the public will also be able to learn about SAA’s history as a pioneer in aviation training and discover how CAAS is redefining Singapore as an air hub after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Director of SAA, Ms Charmaine Liu said that the open house is "a unique opportunity" for aviation enthusiasts of all ages to learn more about the academy's rich history and Singapore's contribution to international aviation.

"We hope such programmes will ignite a strong passion in aviation and help us build a pipeline of aviation professionals for Singapore aviation’s next chapter."

SAA TRANSFORMATION

The open house comes before SAA shuts its current premises in April for a S$120 million (US$89 million) "spatial transformation"

SAA was set up in 1958 and has trained over 157,000 aviation professionals from about 200 countries.

The new academy will reopen in two years with 20 per cent more training capacity.

It will also incorporate new learning and public spaces on the site, said CAAS, adding that visitors will also be able to learn more about what the new SAA will have to offer at the open house.

CAAS said the academy will continue to offer its training programmes at hotels and other conference venues in Singapore as well as overseas while the transformation is ongoing.
