Keanu Reeves reveals in a new interview he has tried and failed to get a Constantine 2 movie made as studios have shown little interest. Reeves first stepped into the role in the 2005 Constantine movie, which borrowed elements from various storylines in the DC Comics' Hellblazer past, as the titular warlock and exorcist who found himself wrapped up in the war between Heaven and Hell. Constantine finds the escalating battle to be centered around Los Angeles Police Department Detective Angela Dodson and her sister, who recently committed suicide and has ties to an apocalyptic prophecy.

With an ensemble cast led by Reeves and Rachel Weisz, Constantine hit theaters in 2005 to generally mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike and a modest box office reception, grossing over $230 million against its estimated $100 million budget. This middling reception led to plans for a sequel ultimately languishing in hell for the past 15 years, with the character later rebooted on the screen in a short-lived solo TV series portrayed by Matt Ryan and carried over into the Arrowverse. Various future plans are currently in the works for Constantine, though one creative continues to remain hopeful even as doors have been shut in his face.

While catching up with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Reeves was asked about past characters he would like to revisit, even if "no one is asking." The actor once again reiterated his desire to play the DC warlock in a Constantine 2 movie and revealed he's tried to do so multiple times. See what Reeves said below:

"I would love to play John Constantine again from the Constantine movie. I've tried, I've tried, Stephen. I would love to."

It may not come entirely as a surprise to learn that Reeves' efforts to get Constantine 2 made haven't made much progress given the film's mixed reception at the time of its release and modest box office response. Additionally, with Warner Bros. plotting out various other adaptations involving the character, including another potential recasting for J.J. Abrams' Justice League Dark universe at HBO Max, Constantine's future is a pretty tangled web at the moment. That being said, the studio's continued expansion of the DC multiverse both within the DC Extended Universe and various TV shows may make now the perfect moment to hear Reeves out.

As Colbert indicated in his interview with Reeves, the star is enjoying a strong wave of renewed interest in his projects both old and new, including the John Wick franchise and the recently revived Matrix and Bill & Ted movies. Plus, with Reeves consistently expressing his desire to return for Constantine 2 and audience favor turning towards a cult following in recent years, it would be surprising if Warner Bros. doesn't at least consider hearing Reeves and the fans out to bring the actor back. In the meantime, audiences can revisit the original Constantine on HBO Max now.
