Think holidays are a time for complete relaxation and letting go of all your worries? Well, not always.

Thanks to her vigilance, one woman and her family from Singapore recently escaped the sticky fingers of pickpockets while travelling in Athens, Greece.

And it didn't happen just once, but twice within 24 hours.

In videos posted to TikTok on Tuesday (Dec 13), user Calladion shared her unpleasant experience, which began right after they landed.

While on the train from the airport to their Airbnb accommodation, she noticed two men "winking at each other" and "behaving suspiciously". They were also obviously "listening to [her family's] conversation attentively" to know where they were heading, Calladion shared.

At their intended stop, the two men got off the train as well. The woman immediately told her family to stay put in the station to allow the men to exit first.

Thinking that the coast was clear, they proceeded to exit the station when suddenly, the escalator they were on came to a halt.

"When I turned back, I saw one of the guys [had] deliberately pressed the stop button," said Calladion.

Realising that it was the same men who were on the train, she immediately shouted in Mandarin to her family, "No, no, no, don't let them touch our luggage".

True enough, the men acted quickly and pretended to help with the luggage, said Calladion.

Despite the family "rejecting them aggressively", she shared that during that time, her uncle had felt a hand reaching into his pockets.

Thankfully, his pockets were empty as Calladion had forewarned her family to keep any valuables in their bags and hold it close in front of them.

But their ordeal didn't end there.

The two men were still seen lingering at a bus stop nearby after Calladion and her family got out of the station.

"We stood there for a good 15 minutes because we didn't want them to follow us to our Airbnb," she shared.

Although Calladion thought they had lost them for a bit, the same men reappeared again as they were trying to navigate their way to the Airbnb accommodation.

"I decided that it was too dangerous for us to check into our Airbnb, because if they know where we are staying, they can camp there or bring more people along the next day to attack us again," she shared.

A decision was made to check in to the nearest hotel instead. But they were told it was fully booked when they got there, despite checks online indicating rooms were available.

By then, it was already midnight.

"There was eight of us with two children and the [hotel] staff did not offer us any help," said Calladion, expressing her disappointment.

Trying her luck with a credit card concierge service, she eventually managed to secure a place to stay for the night.

The second incident occurred the next day, when Calladion and her 12-year-old cousin were walking along a shopping street in the city.

There, a man suddenly came up to the boy and casually put a hand over his shoulder as he struck up a conversation with him.

In the next moment, a woman walking in the opposite direction knocked into her "real hard".

Thankfully, Calladion shared that she had been walking with folded arms, clutching her sling bag to her chest the whole way.

"No chance," she added emphatically. "The main takeaway [from the experience] is that they'll always try to distract you before they pick your pockets."

The savvy traveller gave also shared some other tips to stay safe while overseas, including carrying a sling bag instead of a backpack.

But if you have to use a backpack, one useful tip is to use a keychain to secure the two zippers together.

And remember to put your phone down, especially in crowded places.

She added: "When you're in the metro or in crowded places like tourist attractions or shopping streets, do not use too much of your phone. Be focused, observe your surroundings, and keep a lookout for each other."

"If you feel like you're being followed, don't be in a hurry to get off the train or to exit the station," Calladion shared, adding that one should enter a convenience store or a restaurant if they feel like they're being followed.

Another tip is to put valuables in the most hidden compartment of the bag, placing miscellaneous items on top of it "so it's not that easily reachable."

Last but not least, "do not accept help from strangers, if possible".

Unfortunately as a result of being on guard all the time, the trip turned out to be quite a stressful one for Calladion.

In a reply to a comment, she expressed feeling "quite tired every day when I reach my hotel".

The experience has also made her grateful to be living in Singapore.

    alt

Other commenters shared similar experiences while travelling in Europe, with one sharing that travellers to Greece should also be wary of the ol' money swap tactic.

A netizen indicated, however, that he did not feel unsafe during his two-week solo trip to the same Greek city.

Don't totally agree on some points, and I find the techniques a little messy.

I do agree on most of the general concepts, though my perspective is from a western neo-occultist's angle.

It has taken me a very long time to start this thread, mainly because of years of bad experiences in revealing this aspect of my life to the public. The subject is very close to my heart as it is who I am, not something I show up once a week to take part in.

The Occult had thousand of years of misinformation, suppression, and prosecution, and perhaps rightfully so. Those in power will never want their subjects to hold truth and power for themselves.

I don't proclaim to know anything, in fact, I'm not sure if I know anything about the subject myself. I am only trying to share and learn from fellow occultists. For those in the know, I am a Chaote with Pagan believes, and write from that perspective.

With open hearts and open minds, may that which you hold divine, be with you always.

SINGAPORE — While riding a bicycle down a slope in a multi-storey carpark, a 13-year-old girl struck a metal railing and held it momentarily before falling six floors, a coroner’s court heard on Thursday (3 September).

The girl, who was relatively new to cycling, had possibly lost control of the bicycle while she was riding down the ramp, said an assistant superintendent who had conducted investigations into the case.

The student was found at the foot of Block 526A Pasir Ris Street 51 on 8 January this year, and was pronounced dead at the scene at about 4.28pm.

According to the investigating officer (IO), the fixie bicycle had belonged to a male classmate of the girl.

On the day of the incident, the girl had headed to the multi-storey carpark on 8 January after school and lunch with a group of her classmates.

There, the girl watched three of her male friends ride their fixie bicycles and wanted to try her hand at the bicycle as well. A fixie bicycle is a fixed-gear bicycle which does not have usual brakes attached to it.

In order to stop the bicycle, the rider would have to push hard against the pedal in a reverse direction or plant his or her feet on the floor.

The girl settled on a 103cm-high bicycle as it suited her 153cm height. Though she had difficulty balancing on the bicycle initially, the girl managed to ride from level 6B of the multi-storey carpark to level 7A. She was accompanied by a female classmate, who walked beside her due to her initial unsteadiness.

The female friend walked beside the girl as she rode the bicycle down the slope back to level 6B. However she was unable to keep up with the bicycle’s speed and told the girl to turn right.

According to the IO, the girl failed to turn. She collided into a railing and hung onto it for a short moment. Before the friend could reach her however, the girl “could not hold on anymore” and fell to the ground, said the IO.

A witness called the police at 4.05pm, saying that a student had fallen off the car park.

An autopsy report on the girl concluded that she sustained skull and rib fractures. Based on the examination, the cause of death was multiple injuries consistent with a fall from height and there was no reason to suspect foul play. No alcohol or drugs were detected in the girl’s system.

State Coroner Kamala Ponnamapalam asked the IO if he was able to establish why the girl had been unable to turn right and went straight.

While the IO was unable to give a conclusive reason, he suggested that the girl might not have been familiar with the bicycle and lost control as she was riding, based on the accounts from her female friend and the girl’s father.

Her father had told the IO that the girl only started learning how to ride bicycles when she was in Primary Six. Her friend stated that the girl had trouble controlling the bicycle when she first got on.

The coroner’s case is still before the courts, and findings will be delivered at a later date.

SINGAPORE — Under the pretext of discussing disciplinary matters with his male students, a secondary school principal pinched their genitals in his office.

The 48-year-old Singaporean got away with his actions against the boys, aged 12 to 15, until one victim confided in another victim. Both then reported the matter to the school’s Operations Manager on 25 October 2017 after realising they went through similar ordeals.

The principal pleaded guilty on Friday (28 August) to three charges of molesting three boys, two of whom were below 14 years of age, with the remaining eight charges taken into consideration for sentencing.

All the victims, and the principal, as well as the school, cannot be named to protect the victims’ identities.

The court heard that the victims whom the principal targeted were at-risk youths who faced family problems or had disciplinary records within or outside of school. They were often called by the school’s Operations Manager to the General Office to serve their detention, be counselled or informed of disciplinary action.

The offences occurred between August and October 2017.

Whenever the principal noticed a student at the Operations Manager’s desk, he would call the student into his room for a private chat. At times the principal would also inform the students’ teachers of his intention to speak to them and fix a time to meet them at his office – supposedly to discuss disciplinary issues.

During their private meetings, the principal would have the student sit with his back towards the closed door, which had a glass panel on it. While conversing with them, the principal would begin touching their limbs and progress to poking or pinching their groin. He would also rub their chests over their shirts and insert his hand into their shorts to touch their genitals.

One victim, then 14, told the principal that he was uncomfortable with the acts and was told to return to class. The victim was hesitant to report the matter as he felt that the principal had “helped him significantly when he was in Secondary 1” as the man had allowed him to be promoted to the next year despite him not scoring the required grades. The boy felt that he could not betray the man. He only revealed the molest during investigations.

The principal told another victim that he might end up in Boys Town, and pinched the boy’s genitals while chiding him for being involved in a rioting matter. The boy eventually made excuses to escape the room.

One boy did not disclose the molest as he was afraid no one would believe him, given his disciplinary issues.

After the offence came to light through two of the victims, internal investigations were conducted and the matter reported to the Ministry of Education. A police report was lodged on 6 November 2017. Incidents against another five victims then surfaced.

The principal is expected to be sentenced on 6 October. His lawyer informed the court that his client has a medical appointment to assess a spinal condition, which may affect whether he receives caning.

For molesting a person under 14, the principal may be jailed up to five years, or fined, or caned. For molest, he faces a jail term of up to two years, with fine or caning.
