Progress Singapore Party (PSP) member S Nallakaruppan has alleged harassment by purported supporters of the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) during a door-to-door outreach walkabout in Choa Chu Kang GRC on Sunday, 4 January 2025. In a detailed Facebook post, the former candidate for Nee Soon GRC described a series of incidents involving individuals who closely followed his team, took photographs, and allegedly engaged in unprofessional conduct. The PSP team had visited Goodview Gardens in Bukit Gombak to distribute flyers and extend new year greetings to residents. According to Mr Nallakaruppan, individuals believed to be PAP supporters shadowed their team, claiming it was “their territory.” Despite PSP’s request for them to conduct outreach at separate blocks, the individuals continued to hand out their flyers to residents approached by PSP. Describing their conduct as “unprofessional,” Mr Nallakaruppan said, “After our distribution, we gathered at Blk 386 Lobby to conduct our debrief. Stella Stan Lee, another PSP member who participated in the walkabout, shared her concerns. She posted a photograph showing an individual filming her at close range, stating, “No woman would feel safe with any man filming her in such tight proximity.” Footage and photos taken on that day shows phones shoved in PSP volunteers’ faces as individuals persistently followed them, despite being asked to stop. Individuals dressed in white were said to have followed PSP members to the car park and were seen taking photographs of their car number plates. One of the women involved was spotted wearing a badge displaying the PAP logo. The allegations drew comments from other opposition figures and activists. Ravi Philemon, Secretary General of Red Dot United, shared his own experience of similar treatment during his 2015 election campaign, noting that the “modus operandi remains the same.” Activist Suraendher Kumarr added that he faced comparable behaviour when visiting Member of Parliament Low Yen Ling in Choa Chu Kang GRC, where photos were taken of him without consent. Kenneth Jeyaretnam, Secretary-General of the Reform Party, also faced similar harassment during a visit to Yishun Chong Pang Market in June 2023. According to Mr Jeyaretnam, he and his team were closely shadowed and filmed by unidentified individuals throughout their visit. The group allegedly engaged in several provocative behaviours, including making unsolicited offers and attempting to intimidate residents who tried to interact with Reform Party members. During the 2015 election, the Workers’ Party, which contested the ward, reported that their volunteers were hounded by PAP activists. These volunteers were subjected to hostile actions, such as being followed and having pamphlets removed from residents’ doors. When TOC attended one of the Workers’ Party walkabouts in 2015, PAP activists were observed shadowing WP volunteers and monitoring their actions. PSP’s allegations come amid heightened political activity as parties begin outreach efforts in preparation for the next General Election. The incidents raise concerns about the conduct of volunteers and supporters in ensuring fair and respectful competition. Mr Nallakaruppan concluded his post by reiterating PSP’s commitment to providing Singaporeans with a fair choice in elections. He urged Singaporeans to reflect on whether such behaviour aligns with democratic principles. TOC has reached out to PAP Members of Parliament in Choa Chu Kang GRC for comment but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
