<p>
	Singapore could face 12.5% US tariff after forced labour trade probe | The Straits Times
</p>

	<a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/business/singapore-could-face-12-5-us-tariff-after-forced-labour-trade-probe" rel="external nofollow">https://www.straitstimes.com/business/singapore-could-face-12-5-us-tariff-after-forced-labour-trade-probe</a>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Based on the report from The Straits Times on June 3, 2026, here are the detailed points regarding the proposed 12.5% U.S. tariff on Singaporean exports:
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	The USTR Findings
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	- The Proposed Tariff: The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has proposed an additional 12.5% tariff on goods from Singapore.
</p>

<p>
	- Reason for Penalty: The USTR investigation, initiated on March 12, 2026, concluded that Singapore failed to both impose (adopt) and effectively enforce a prohibition on the importation of goods produced with forced labour.
</p>

<p>
	- Broad Investigation: Singapore was among 60 economies investigated. While six economies were found to be partially compliant (facing a lower 10% tariff), Singapore was grouped with 53 other economies deemed to have failed on both counts (imposing and enforcing the ban).
</p>

<p>
	- Legal Basis: The USTR stated these practices are "unreasonable and burden or restrict US commerce," making them actionable under Section 301(b) of the Trade Act.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Singapore’s Response
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	- MTI Refutation: The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) rejected the claims as early as April 2026, stating there is no evidence of Singapore’s involvement in supply chains associated with forced labour.
</p>

<p>
	- No Known Exports: MTI emphasized that the Republic is not aware of any goods produced with forced labour being exported from Singapore to the U.S.
</p>

<p>
	- Existing Frameworks: Singapore maintains that it has robust legal measures, including the Prevention of Human Trafficking Act and the Penal Code, to criminalize forced labour domestically.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Context of U.S. Trade Policy
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	- Trump Administration Action: These probes were initiated under President Donald Trump’s administration following a February 2026 U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down the legal basis for his 2025 "reciprocal tariffs."
</p>

<p>
	- Section 122 vs. Section 301: The current 10% global levy (Section 122) is set to expire in July. These new Section 301 tariffs are intended as a harsher replacement.
</p>

<p>
	- Other Probes: Singapore is concurrently facing separate USTR investigations into "structural excess capacity" in certain manufacturing sectors.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Timeline and Next Steps
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	- June 22, 2026: Deadline for interested parties to submit a summary of testimony.
</p>

<p>
	- July 7, 2026: Public hearings are scheduled to begin.
</p>

<p>
	- Implementation: The levy is not immediately effective; its finalization depends on the outcome of the comments and hearings starting in July.
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Ambassador Jamieson Greer, head of the USTR, framed the move as necessary to ensure American workers do not compete on an "unlevel playing field" caused by forced labour in global supply chains.
</p>

<p>
	Now, new details have been shared that provide more insight into ZAM memory. For starters, the new memory is set to offer 2x the bandwidth as HBM4, even rivaling the next-generation HBM4E standard, which isn't expected till next year. ZAM itself is aiming at a 2028-2030 timeframe, so it will be some time before the project hits production level.
</p>

<p>
	At VLSI Symposium 2026, Intel and SoftBank subsidiary, <a href="https://www.saimemory.co.jp/en/" rel="external nofollow">SAIMEMORY</a>, will unveil new details and have already previewed some features of the upcoming standard. The new details have highlighted various aspects that we will discuss in detail.
</p>

<p>
	Starting with the design itself, ZAM or Z-Angle memory is being demoed with a 9-layer stacked design. A single stack includes eight DRAM stacks, each with a 3 micron silicon substrate between each stack. The main substrate features a single Logic controller that supplements all nine DRAM stacks.
</p>

<p>
	There are three main TSV layers, with each layer packing 13.7k Through-Silicon-Vias inter-connect paths that utilize hybrid bonding. Each layer offers 1.125 GB per layer, so we are looking at a 10 GB capacity per stack or 30 GB in the entire package. The ZAM stack measures 171mm2 (15.4 x 11.1mm), and the memory offers 0.25 Tb/s bandwidth per mm2 equaling 5.3 TB/s of bandwidth per stack.
</p>

<p>
	Now let's talk about the advantages of HBM memory. Currently, HBM is the preferred choice for high-performance AI accelerators and GPUs. But as HBM scales up, it also leads to structural problems, including more heat and higher power. ZAM addresses three core areas: high-density, wide-bandwidth, and lower power consumption. ZAM's structural characteristics allow for a vertical build that is great for heat dissipation without the need to pass through the wiring layer.
</p>

<p>
	Key Advantages of ZAM:
</p>

<div>
	<div>
		<div>

		</div>
	</div>
</div>

<ul>
	<li>
		Higher Bandwidth Density: ~0.25 Tb/s/mm² (vs. lower in HBM)
	</li>
	<li>
		Lower Power Consumption: Optimized for low data transfer power
	</li>
	<li>
		Superior Heat Dissipation: Vertical architecture allows better thermal management (HBM suffers from heat buildup due to wiring layers)
	</li>
	<li>
		Ultra-High Stacking: Supports 9+ layers with extremely thin 3μm Si per stack and via-in-one TSV
	</li>
	<li>
		Innovative Tech: Magnetic field coupled wireless I/O + advanced bonding for scalability
	</li>
	<li>
		AI-Optimized: Addresses HBM's structural limits for generative AI workloads
	</li>
</ul>

<p>
	The final goal with ZAM is to achieve a dense 3D memory design through 3.5D packaging technology, which houses vertical and horizontal layers, including the high-bandwidth, large memory stack, Power/Ground rails, Silicon Photonics, and Legacy IO, all on a single substrate. ZAM sure does sound very promising, and we look forward to the first real-time demo, but for it to be recognized as a truly competitive solution against HBM, it needs to see real application, and what better way to do so speedily when the AI markets are going in full force.

<p>
	We cover browser market share data on an occasional basis, with the lack of a regular schedule being due to the fact that it's fairly unchanged month to month, as Chrome <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/google-chrome-continues-crushing-other-browsers-reaches-new-all-time-high/" rel="external nofollow">continues to crush the competition</a>. However, just because something is popular doesn't necessarily mean that it is also the best, and this is exactly what a new report that evaluates browsers on user privacy emphasizes.
</p>

<p>
	According to a December 2025 study conducted by <a href="https://www.digitain.com/" rel="external nofollow">Digitain</a> on risks to user privacy, ChatGPT Atlas is the worst browser in this area. This shouldn't be particularly surprising considering that the browser <a href="https://www.neowin.net/news/openai-introduces-chatgpt-atlas-a-new-ai-powered-web-browser/" rel="external nofollow">created by OpenAI is very new</a>, but it is concerning that it apparently isn't built with privacy in mind at all. ChatGPT Atlas failed all state partitioning tests, which means that it does not actively block websites from tracking users across different sessions. The browser ranked quite low across all three evaluated metrics (privacy and anti-fingerprinting, tracker and data blocking, connection and navigation security), giving it an overall privacy risk score of 99 out of 100.
</p>

<p>
	The world's most popular browser, Google Chrome, came in as the second worst browser. However, it was only slightly better than ChatGPT Atlas in the three aforementioned areas, netting it a score of 76 out of 100. Vivaldi scored roughly the same at 75, while Edge was next at 63, which is also quite high risk. Here is the list of the top 10 worst browsers when it comes to user security, along with their risk scores (the lower, the better in terms of privacy):
</p>

<div>
	<div>
		<div>

		</div>
	</div>
</div>

<ol>
	<li>
		ChatGPT Atlas - 99
	</li>
	<li>
		Google Chrome -76
	</li>
	<li>
		Vivaldi - 75
	</li>
	<li>
		Microsoft Edge - 63
	</li>
	<li>
		Opera - 58
	</li>
	<li>
		Ungoogled - 55
	</li>
	<li>
		Mozilla Firefox - 50
	</li>
	<li>
		Apple Safari - 49
	</li>
	<li>
		DuckDuckGo - 44
	</li>
	<li>
		Tor - 40
	</li>
</ol>

<p>
	Paruyr Harutyunyan, Group head of Digital Marketing at Digitain, further noted that:
</p>

<div>
	<div>
		<div>

		</div>

		<div>
			"New AI-powered browsers like ChatGPT Atlas and Comet from Perplexity are getting a lot of attention right now, and millions of people are trying them out because of the AI hype. These browsers come with interesting features that traditional ones don't have, but users need to stop and check how secure they actually are. AI works by collecting and learning from data, which means these tools might be gathering more of your personal information than you realize. Just because something uses AI doesn't automatically make it safe or private."
		</div>

		<div>

		</div>
	</div>
</div>

<p>
	Interestingly, <a href="https://www.neowin.net/software/brave-browser-185117/" rel="external nofollow">Brave</a> and <a href="https://www.neowin.net/software/mullvad-browser-1454/" rel="external nofollow">Mullvad Browser</a> were touted as the browsers with the most focus on user privacy. Although the former is a fairly known option for many, the latter is a result of a collaboration between Mullvad VPN and The Tor Project. It is marketed as an open-source privacy-focused browser that minimizes tracking.

<p>
	<a href="https://www.androidheadlines.com/category/oneplus" rel="external nofollow">OnePlus</a>, as you know it, is over. The brand is being dismantled—wound down and put on life support until it honors its remaining commitments, and by then, no one will remember to ask what happened. That’s not speculation. That’s the playbook, and we’ve watched it run before.
</p>

<p>
	This conclusion comes from a three-continent investigation—current and former employees across R&amp;D, Business, and Marketing at headquarters in China and regional offices in the US, India, and Europe. It’s confirmed by four independent analyst firms whose market data verifies what OnePlus won’t say. And it’s informed by 15 years covering OnePlus and the smartphone industry’s business dynamics—watching Samsung and Apple rise while Nokia, BlackBerry, HTC, and LG followed this exact pattern into irrelevance.
</p>

<p>
	The evidence is damning. Shipments in freefall. A premium stronghold that collapsed almost overnight. Headquarters shuttered without announcement. Partnerships ended. Western teams gutted to skeleton crews. Product cancellations—the Open 2 foldable and 15s compact flagship have both been scrapped; neither will launch as planned. And every major decision now flows from China—regional offices don’t strategize anymore, they take orders.
</p>

<div>

</div>

<p>
	Two weeks ago, <a href="https://www.36kr.com/p/3630703235511041" rel="external nofollow">OPPO did this to Realme</a>. The press release said “synergy.” The reality was a bloodbath—R&amp;D gutted, <a href="https://www.donews.com/news/detail/8/6334837.html" rel="external nofollow">workforce slashed</a>, and a <a href="https://www.indiatvnews.com/technology/news/realme-oppo-merger-2026-better-after-sales-service-and-new-sub-brand-structure-explained-2026-01-08-1025040" rel="external nofollow">merger decided</a> one day before the announcement. It played out over the holiday break while nobody was watching. Most outlets ran the corporate statement and moved on. We didn’t.
</p>

<p>
	OPPO isn’t restructuring. <a href="https://www.androidheadlines.com/category/news/phones/oppo" rel="external nofollow">OPPO</a> is cleaning house—and the body count includes jobs, markets, headquarters, R&amp;D teams, and entire sub-brands. OnePlus is next.
</p>

	This is what freefall looks like.

<p>
	OnePlus shipments dropped more than 20% in 2024—from roughly 17 million units to somewhere between 13 and 14 million. Parent company OPPO Group grew 2.8% in the same period. <a href="https://omdia.tech.informa.com/pr/2025/feb/omdia-global-smartphone-shipments-rebound-with-7point1-percent-growth-in-2024-amid-industry-recovery" rel="external nofollow">Omdia’s verdict was blunt</a>: “Growth was driven entirely by the OPPO brand.” OnePlus wasn’t just underperforming. OnePlus was dragging them down.
</p>

<p>
	India was supposed to save them. It didn’t. In May 2024, approximately 4,500 retail stores across six states stopped selling OnePlus products. The Online Retailers Association cited warranty delays and razor-thin margins—stores couldn’t make money selling OnePlus phones, so they stopped. The fallout: premium segment share collapsed from 21% to 6%. That’s a 71% decline in twelve months. Overall, <a href="https://my.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prAP53185725" rel="external nofollow">India’s share dropped</a> from 6.1% to 3.9%. The stronghold was crumbling.

<p>
	China was worse. OnePlus president Li Jie set a public goal in January 2024: surpass Xiaomi’s 3% China share—just the Xiaomi brand, not including Redmi. OnePlus hit 1.6%. Li Jie later told the press that 2024 sales were “basically flat.” The math says otherwise. When your share drops from 2% to 1.6%, that’s a 20% decline. Flat is a lie you tell when you’re hoping nobody checks.
</p>

<div>
	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	Here’s the trap: India and China now account for 74% of OnePlus shipments. Three-quarters of the business is concentrated in two markets, and both markets are collapsing. TechInsights cited “<a href="https://www.techinsights.com/blog/q2-2024-oppo-oneplus-refocus-core-strengths-amid-falling-track" rel="external nofollow">weak demand in North America</a> and Western Europe” as the primary decline drivers. The West isn’t coming to save them. The West already left.
</p>

<p>
	Here’s what that means if you’re not reading quarterly reports: OnePlus has almost nowhere left to sell phones. The two markets keeping them alive are both collapsing. That’s not a rough quarter. That’s a company running out of road.
</p>

<div>
	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	So the cuts started. Offices. Teams. Entire regions. No announcements—just disappearances. By the time anyone noticed, it was already done. This wasn’t a reaction to bad news. This was the playbook all along.
</p>

<h2>
	Beginning of the End, No Press Release Required
</h2>

<p>
	Start in America. Dallas headquarters – closed, March 2024. No announcement. The building that once housed OnePlus’s US operations is gone, and if you weren’t paying attention, you’d never know it existed. What remains is a skeleton crew in Palo Alto – fewer than fifteen people for all of North America.
</p>

<p>
	The carrier retreat tells the rest. OnePlus’s <a href="https://www.androidheadlines.com/category/carriers/t-mobile" rel="external nofollow">T-Mobile</a> partnership ended in early 2023. The <a href="https://www.androidheadlines.com/category/oneplus/oneplus-15" rel="external nofollow">OnePlus 15</a>? Unlocked only—no American carrier will sell it. In a market where carriers move the majority of smartphones, that’s not a distribution strategy. It’s the beginning of the end.
</p>

<div>
	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	Europe went dark even earlier. In 2020, OnePlus cut its teams across France, Germany, and the UK from around sixty employees to fewer than ten. They just quietly disappeared. No restructuring memo. No press release. Gone.
</p>

<p>
	Then there’s India – the market that was supposed to be the future, and turned out to be one of the final straws that broke the camel’s back.
</p>

<p>
	In August 2019, co-founder Pete Lau stood in front of cameras and promised OnePlus would build its largest R&amp;D center in India. Fifteen hundred employees by 2022. A commitment to the market that had embraced them when the West wouldn’t.
</p>

<div>
	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	Tracxn pulled the data in February 2024: one hundred and sixteen employees. That’s all. Not the fifteen hundred promised by 2022.
</p>

<p>
	That promise didn’t get delayed. It got buried. No explanation. No revised timeline. No acknowledgment was ever made. Either Lau believed something that was never realistic, or he said what the moment required and moved on. The result is the same: the people who believed him got left behind.
</p>

<p>
	“Chinese management has no trust in India R&amp;D,” one employee wrote on Glassdoor. The people doing the work figured it out before anyone told them.
</p>

<p>
	We’ve seen it ourselves. The OnePlus 15 launch was a Zoom call. Previous flagships flew journalists out for multi-day events—grand reveals, hands-on time, the full production. This was a stark contrast. It felt less like a flagship launch and more like a startup stretching a crowdfunding budget. The marketing spend wasn’t slashed. There wasn’t any.
</p>

<div>
	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	The communications staff we’ve worked with for years? Most have quietly moved on. The US PR team that once fielded our calls is down to a couple of people.
</p>

<p>
	None of this is proof by itself. But when you’ve covered this industry for fifteen years, you learn to recognize the signs. This is a brand on the verge of collapse, following the liquidation playbook page by page.
</p>

<h2>
	$14 Billion Couldn’t Save the Hype
</h2>

<p>
	Here’s the thing: OPPO saw this coming.
</p>

<div>
	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	In December 2022, OPPO pledged $14 billion to save OnePlus. They opened their retail stores to OnePlus customers. They gave OnePlus access to their service centers. They let OnePlus sell phones at zero profit—move units now, figure out the margins later.
</p>

	<img alt="OPPO logo AM AH" data-ratio="75.08" srcset="https://www.androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/OPPO-logo-AM-AH-1420x799.webp 1420w, https://www.androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/OPPO-logo-AM-AH-355x200.webp 355w, https://www.androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/OPPO-logo-AM-AH-555x312.webp 555w, https://www.androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/OPPO-logo-AM-AH-1154x649.jpg 1154w, https://www.androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/OPPO-logo-AM-AH.jpg 1600w" data-src="https://www.androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/OPPO-logo-AM-AH-1420x799.webp" src="https://mugentech.net/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png">

<div>
	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	That’s not a growth investment. That’s emergency intervention. You don’t hand a brand a blank check and tell them profitability is optional unless you’re watching them drown.
</p>

<p>
	Companies don’t do this for healthy brands. They do this for brands they’re trying to resuscitate.
</p>

<p>
	And it didn’t work.
</p>

<p>
	In 2024, OPPO grew 2.8%. OnePlus declined more than 20%. The subsidy, the retail access, the service network, the permission to bleed money—none of it turned the ship around. The patient got the transplant and rejected it anyway.
</p>

<p>
	That’s when the math changed. OnePlus holds roughly 1.1% of global smartphone shipments. Running it as a “separate” brand—its own marketing team, its own PR operation, its own service infrastructure—costs money. Real money. At 1.1% share with a 20% year-over-year decline, that cost stopped making sense.
</p>

<p>
	So OPPO made the call. Not publicly. Not with a press release. But the evidence is everywhere: closed headquarters, gutted teams, cancelled products, carrier partnerships abandoned. The $14 billion lifeline was a three-year bet. The bet didn’t pay off. Now they’re cutting losses.
</p>

<p>
	We’ve seen this before. Nokia followed this trajectory. BlackBerry followed this trajectory. HTC followed this trajectory. LG followed this trajectory. Western retreat, consolidation to core markets, then absorption or shutdown. Every one of them told investors things were fine right up until they weren’t.
</p>

<div>
	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<h2>
	What This Means For Your Phone
</h2>

<p>
	Nothing. Yet.
</p>

<p>
	Your OnePlus isn’t bricking overnight. Your updates aren’t stopping tomorrow. OnePlus just launched a few devices, there’s a few more in the pipeline, and they have a lot of stock on the shelves—so who knows the exact timeline.
</p>

<p>
	OnePlus honors its consumer commitments, and we know OPPO will back them up. Your warranty will be supported. Your 3-4 years of Android updates, 4-5 years of security patches? You’ll get every single one.
</p>

<p>
	It’s what happens after that you should think about. What about the brand?
</p>

<h2>
	“Never Settle”
</h2>

<p>
	No official announcement. No press release. Just silence from a company that built its identity on being loud.
</p>

<div>
	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	OnePlus isn’t dead—there’s no funeral yet, no official ending. But the signs are everywhere, and we’ve learned to read them.
</p>

	<img alt="OnePlus 13 AM AH 07" data-ratio="75.08" srcset="https://www.androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/OnePlus-13-AM-AH-07-1-1420x799.webp 1420w, https://www.androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/OnePlus-13-AM-AH-07-1-355x200.webp 355w, https://www.androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/OnePlus-13-AM-AH-07-1-555x312.webp 555w, https://www.androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/OnePlus-13-AM-AH-07-1-1154x649.webp 1154w, https://www.androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/OnePlus-13-AM-AH-07-1.webp 1600w" data-src="https://www.androidheadlines.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/OnePlus-13-AM-AH-07-1-1420x799.webp" src="https://mugentech.net/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png">

<div>
	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	Here’s what matters: OnePlus was a pioneer. They didn’t play by the rules—they wrote new ones. Flagship specs at half the price. An invite system that made buying a phone feel like joining a movement. A community that actually shaped the product.
</p>

<p>
	They faced an uphill battle from day one. The smartphone industry doesn’t leave room for underdogs. Samsung and Apple own the high end. Chinese giants fight for scraps everywhere else. The margins are brutal, the competition relentless, and the innovation never stops.
</p>

<p>
	OnePlus didn’t fail at making great devices. The OnePlus 15 proves they still know how. They failed at something much harder—surviving an industry designed to crush anyone who isn’t already winning.
</p>

<p>
	The industry loses something when that disappears. We lose the competition. We lose choice. We lose proof that you didn’t have to be Samsung or Apple to matter.
</p>

<p>
	We hope OPPO finds a way to keep the legacy alive. A OnePlus 16 would be more than a phone—it would be a tribute to a brand that told an entire generation of smartphone enthusiasts to “Never Settle.”

<div>
	<div>
		<div>
			<p>
				An unconfirmed report early this month suggested Asus was pulling back on its smartphone plans, but the company declined to comment at the time. Asus chairman Jonney Shih has now confirmed the wind-down of its smartphone business during an event in Taiwan. Instead, Asus will focus on AI products like robots and smart glasses.
			</p>

			<p>
				Shih addressed the company’s future plans during a 2026 kick-off event in Taiwan, as reported by <a href="https://www.inside.com.tw/article/40522-asus-phone-nomore" rel="external nofollow">Inside</a>. “Asus will no longer add new mobile phone models in the future,” said Shih (machine translated).
			</p>

			<p>
				So don’t expect a new Zenfone or ROG Phone from Asus in 2026. That said, very few phone buyers were keeping tabs on the latest Asus phones anyway, which is probably why Asus is throwing in the towel. Shih isn’t saying Asus won’t ever release a new phone, but the company will take an “indefinite wait-and-see” approach. Again, this is a translation and could be interpreted in multiple ways.
			</p>

			<p>
				The Zenfone line might not be missed—its claim to fame was being slightly smaller and cheaper than competing devices, but Asus’ support and update policy were lightyears behind the market leaders. The <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/04/the-asus-rog-phone-7-has-a-giant-active-cooling-backpack-two-usb-ports/" rel="external nofollow">ROG Phone line</a> has been prominent in the gaming phone niche, offering the latest chipsets with active cooling, multiple USB-C ports, game controller accessories, blinking lights, and even a headphone jack. However, ROG Phones are even more expensive than Samsung’s flagship devices, with the most recent ROG Phone 9 Pro starting at $1,200. Apparently, the market of those who aren’t happy gaming on the latest iPhone or Samsung Galaxy is miniscule.
			</p>

			<p>
				Existing Asus devices should continue to get updates, but Asus never took the lead there. The lavishly expensive ROG Phone 9 Pro is only guaranteed two OS updates and five years of security patches. The most recent Zenfones are also only eligible for two Android version updates, but they get just four years of security support.
			</p>

			<div>

			</div>

			<h2>
				A tough business
			</h2>

			<p>
				Shih’s comments imply that Asus won’t get back into the phone game unless something changes, and that’s not likely. Asus is not the first OEM to drop phone plans, and this is a continuation of a trend that has been underway for years as people upgrade phones less often.
			</p>
		</div>
	</div>

	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<div>
	<div>
		<div>
			<p>
				Asus used to be a major player in the Android device ecosystem, offering myriad phones, tablets, phones that turned into tablets, and <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2012/01/hands-on-with-asuss-successor-the-the-transformer-prime-tablets-padfone/" rel="external nofollow">tablets that turned into PCs</a> (sort of). The rapidly expanding market and advancing technology in the late 2000s and early 2010s left room for companies like Asus to operate alongside bigger OEMs like Samsung and Apple. Those were the days when every smartphone preference was served, from keyboarded sliders, to devices with integrated projectors, to the flat slab phones that eventually won out.
			</p>

			<p>
				Today, smartphones have become a mature technology, and there simply isn’t as much room for improvement year-to-year. Combine that with rising prices, and people are apt to keep their devices longer. The continued rise of Chinese OEMs like Vivo, Xiaomi, and Huawei also makes it more difficult for niche players—particularly those focused on markets outside the US—to earn money designing and manufacturing a new smartphone every year. And as soon as you stop doing that, other brands are faster and more well-supported when the time does come to pick up a new phone.
			</p>

			<p>
				So far, no Android device maker that has taken a break from releasing phones has ever ramped back up. Just ask LG, which once traded blows with hometown rival Samsung in smartphones. LG’s mobile division lost money for years, leading it to scale back its release schedule in 2019. At the time, the company was adamant it would release new phones when it had a good reason. A few years later, LG’s mobile division <a href="https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/04/after-a-decade-of-failure-lg-officially-quits-the-smartphone-market/" rel="external nofollow">called it quits</a>.
			</p>

			<p>
				The possible end of Asus phones further narrows the market, leaving phone buyers with fewer choices. That doesn’t matter to Asus, though, which is a company that exists to make money. While announcing an indefinite pause in smartphone releases, Shih also noted that the company saw a 26.1 percent increase in revenue for 2025, thanks in large part to a doubling of its AI server business. So Asus is focusing on that part of the market. Maybe that’s not the best long-term strategy, but neither is losing money on smartphones.
			</p>

			<p>

			</p>

</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Video game giant Activision is investigating a hacking campaign that’s targeting players with the goal of stealing their credentials, TechCrunch has learned.
</p>

<p>
	At this point, the hackers’ specific goals — apart from stealing passwords for various types of accounts — are unclear. Somehow, the hackers are getting malware on the victim’s computers and then stealing passwords for their gaming accounts and crypto wallets, among others, according to sources.
</p>

<p>
	A person with knowledge of the incidents, who asked to remain anonymous because they weren’t authorized to speak to the press, said that people at Activision Blizzard are investigating, trying to “help remove the malware,” and “working on identifying and remediating player accounts for anyone affected.”
</p>

<div>

</div>

<p>
	“There is not enough data yet on how [the malware] is spreading,” the person said. “It could be only affecting folks who have third party tools installed.”
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	Activision spokesperson Delaney Simmons told TechCrunch that the company is aware of “claims that some player credentials across the broader industry could be compromised from malware from downloading or using unauthorized software,” and that the company servers “remain secure and uncompromised.”
</p>

<p>
	The malware campaign appears to have been uncovered first by Zeebler, a person who develops and sells cheating software for the popular first-person shooter <em>Call of Duty</em>. On Wednesday, in the official channel for the PhantomOverlay cheat provider, Zeebler said that hackers were targeting gamers — some who use cheats — to steal their usernames and passwords.
</p>

<div>
	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	Zeebler described the effort as an “infostealer malware campaign,” where malware designed as legitimate-looking software unknowingly installed by the victim surreptitiously steals their usernames and passwords.
</p>

<p>
	Zeebler told TechCrunch that he found out about the hacking campaign when a PhantomOverlay customer had their account for the cheat software stolen. At that point, Zeebler added, he started investigating and was able to find the database of stolen credentials that the hackers were amassing.
</p>

<p>
	After that, Zeebler said he contacted Activision Blizzard as well as other cheat makers, whose users appear to be affected.
</p>

<p>
	TechCrunch obtained a sample of the allegedly stolen logins, and verified that a portion of the data are genuine credentials. It’s not clear how old or recent the data is.
</p>

<div>
	<div>

	</div>
</div>

<p>
	At this point, there are no reasons to believe regular players of Activision games are at risk, just those who use third-party apps such as cheats.
</p>

<p>
	In any case, as Activision’s Simmons told TechCrunch, users who suspect they may have been compromised can change their password and activate two-factor authentication.
</p>

<p>
	Sony LYTIA LYT-818 50MP sensor with improved Low-Light &amp; HDR Imaging announced<br>
	<br>
	Sony LYTIA LYT-818 sensor features:<br>
	The 1/1.28-type sensor features cutting-edge noise reduction and a high dynamic range, improving image quality, particularly in low-light conditions.<br>
	<br>
	The LYT-818 introduces a technology that makes pictures in low-light conditions much clearer. It uses an Ultra-High Conversion Gain (UHCG) circuit to convert light into an electrical signal more effectively, reducing unwanted noise or “graininess” in photos. This advanced design results in a noise level of just 0.95e-, the lowest among Sony’s mobile sensors, which helps in capturing more natural colors and details, even in dim lighting<br>
	<br>
	<a href="https://pictr.com/image/xrv5zG" rel="external nofollow"><img alt="user posted image" border="0" data-ratio="124.00" data-src="https://pictr.com/images/2024/09/27/xrv5zG.md.jpg" src="https://mugentech.net/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png"></a><br>
	The LYT-818 uses a new HDR (High Dynamic Range) technology that helps capture details in both very bright and very dark areas of a scene. It does this by taking a single shot and processing it at three different settings to balance light and shadows. With an impressive 86dB range, this method reduces issues like bright spots or dark patches in high-contrast scenes. The sensor is also designed to use less power, allowing HDR to work continuously, even during live previews on your phone screen.<br>
	<br>
	Key specs of the LYT-818 sensor include a 1.22 µm unit cell size, Quad Bayer Coding color filter, and a maximum frame rate of 120 fps for 4K2K resolution. It supports analog, digital, and MIPI output interfaces, offering flexibility for various mobile applications. Mass production is set for mid-September 2024.<br>
	<br>
	Vivo X200 Pro series likely the first to feature the LYT-818 sensor:<br>
	Vivo’s upcoming Vivo X200 Pro line could be the first to use this sensor as a recent report from tipster DCS claims that the Vivo X200 Pro and the X200 Pro Mini will be using the Sony LYT-818 sensor for their primary cameras. This 1/1.28″ sensor will be replacing the 1″ Type Sony IMX989 sensor used on the Vivo X100 Pro<br>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	<strong><span style="font-size:large;">Better (very) late than never, right?</span></strong>
</p>

<p>

</p>

<p>
	With such broad and important spheres of society under its jurisdiction, you’d be correct in assuming that Japan’s <strong>Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry</strong> has a lot of information it needs to organize and maintain. So it’s reassuring to know that a recent revision to the ministry’s protocols is going to undeniably modernize its operations. That doesn’t mean that the new regulations allow for cutting-edge advancements in IT, however, just that the ministry is <strong>finally abolishing the required use of antiquated forms of physical media</strong>.
</p>

<p>
	You may recall that back at the start of September in 2022, Minister of Digital Affairs <strong>Taro Kono</strong>, head of Japan’s Digital Agency Cabinet sub-division, <a href="https://soranews24.com/2022/09/03/japanese-government-please-stop-using-floppy-discs-politician-asks/" rel="external nofollow">pleaded with the various branches of the government to identify and revise ordinances that specify outdated physical media forms for certain types of applications, reporting, and record-keeping</a>. The wheels of government tend to turn especially slowly in Japan, though, and it’s only recently that the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has gotten around to doing so in earnest, though. On Monday, METI, as the ministry is also known, announced that as of the end of the 2023 calendar year it has <strong>removed 34 ordinances requiring floppy disks to be the method used for submission of data to the ministry, and an unspecified number of ordinances saying that CD-ROMs must be used</strong>.
</p>

<div>

</div>

<p>
	The abolished floppy disk/CD-ROM requirements stretched back several decades, and they weren’t limited to quaint, non-sensitive parts of society either, as the ordinances were related to fields such as <strong>gas, electricity, and water supply, mining operations, and aircraft and weapons manufacturing</strong>.
</p>

<p>
	The push to end the use of floppy disks within government agencies stems, of course, from two major problems. The first is that a physical media requirement reduces the ability to submit and share data online, hampering operational efficiency and complicating the process of revising or updating the information. Second, it’s extremely difficult to even find floppy disks for sale anymore, as they’ve essentially disappeared from the consumer market.
</p>

<p>
	In his 2022 statement, Kono said that his staff had found approximately 1,900 government ordinances, across a variety of ministries, requiring the use of physical media for data storage. So there’s probably still a long ways to go, but at least METI has started the process.
</p>

<h2>
	What you need to know
</h2>

<ul>
	<li>
		Several Reddit posts have highlighted a five-second delay when loading YouTube videos on Firefox, which disappeared when the user agent was switched to Chrome, revealing a potential browser-specific issue.
	</li>
	<li>
		Investigation by users suggests that the delay isn't a Firefox bug but an intentional addition in the JavaScript code of YouTube's desktop client.
	</li>
	<li>
		Discussions speculate that the added delay might be linked to ad display, possibly as a workaround for users employing ad blockers.
	</li>
</ul>

<p>
	YouTube's desktop site is reportedly slowing down for some people on Mozilla Firefox, causing confusion among users.

<p>
	A Reddit user (<a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/youtube/comments/17z8hsz/youtube_has_started_to_artificially_slow_down/" rel="external nofollow">u/vk6_</a>) posted a video revealing a five-second lag loading YouTube videos on Firefox (via <a href="https://9to5google.com/2023/11/20/youtube-firefox-slow-down-loading/" rel="external nofollow">9to5Google</a>). The same Redditor demonstrated a trick to dodge the endless wait. By temporarily switching to a Chrome disguise, they tricked YouTube into believing they weren't using Firefox, and the video loaded instantly.

		</div>
	</div>
</div>

<p>
	Eagle-eyed users quickly pinpointed the culprit behind the slowdown—a code snippet lurking in YouTube's source code. This sneaky code seems to be part of <a href="https://www.androidcentral.com/apps-software/youtube-three-strikes-policy-for-ad-blockers" rel="external nofollow">YouTube's recent anti-ad-blocking measures</a>.
</p>

<div>

</div>

<p>
	Redditor vk6_ did some digging and discovered that this isn't a Firefox glitch. Apparently, YouTube's JavaScript code has a built-in delay mechanism that intentionally holds up the video playback on desktop for five seconds. Other tech-savvy folks have even tracked down the exact location of this mischievous code in YouTube's source.
</p>

<p>
	However, Android Central's editors and staff writers tried to recreate the delay, but no dice. YouTube seemed to work perfectly fine on Firefox and other <a href="https://www.androidcentral.com/best-android-browsers" rel="external nofollow">web browsers</a> we're using. We've contacted Google for an explanation anyway, and we'll keep you posted once we hear back.
</p>

<p>
	Several Firefox and Edge users <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/17ywbjj/comment/ka0gq04/" rel="external nofollow">reported</a> experiencing the delay even with extensions disabled, suggesting it might be an account-specific issue and that it's not just affecting Mozilla's browser. The delay reportedly happens every time a user opens a YouTube link in a new tab.
</p>

<p>
	Some people have speculated that this delay might be a clumsy attempt by YouTube to force ads on users who block them. The code in question might be trying to make sure that an ad plays for at least five seconds before the actual video starts.
</p>

<p>
	This isn't the first rodeo for Firefox users butting heads with Google over what feels like some intentional slowdown. Back in 2018, former <a href="https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/mozilla-exec-says-google-slowed-youtube-down-on-non-chrome-browsers/" rel="external nofollow">Mozilla executive Chris Peterson alleged</a> that YouTube pages load five times slower on Firefox and Edge compared to Chrome.
</p>

<h2>
	UPDATE
</h2>

<p>
	A YouTube spokesperson has confirmed that the YouTube slowdowns on Firefox are related to its anti-ad-blocker efforts.
</p>

<p>
	"To support a diverse ecosystem of creators globally and allow billions to access their favorite content on YouTube, we’ve launched an effort to urge viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad free experience," the company said in an email to Android Central. "Users who have ad blockers installed may experience suboptimal viewing, regardless of the browser they are using."
</p>

<h2>
	UPDATE 2
</h2>

<p>
	Google has made it clear that YouTube slowdowns aren't just targeting Firefox or Edge browsers. Turns out, if you're using an ad blocker with any browser, including Chrome, you may be experiencing delays in loading videos.
</p>

<p>
	"Ads are a vital lifeline for our creators that helps them run and grow their businesses," a YouTube spokesperson told Android Central. "That's why the use of ad blockers violate YouTube’s Terms of Service."
</p>

<p>
	YouTube's ad blocker radar doesn't discriminate between browsers, so if you've got an ad blocker on any of them, brace yourself for some video loading delays. Google is urging users to either tolerate the ads or cough up some cash for YouTube Premium if they want to enjoy an uninterrupted viewing experience.
</p>

<p>
	Even after ditching your ad blocker, you might still encounter some sluggishness while loading YouTube videos. It's just a temporary hiccup—just give it a refresh, and things should get back to normal in no time.

According to <a href="https://www.optionstheedge.com/topic/watches/malaysian-authorities-raid-swatch-stores-over-rainbow-pride-collection" rel="external nofollow">Options</a> by The Edge Malaysia, the raid was conducted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) and was carried out at several Swatch stores in major malls.

<p>
	Swatch Group’s CEO Nick Hayek Jr has expressed concern about the seizure while reinforcing the brand’s ethos of championing innovation and diversity. He said Swatch is proud of being the canvas on the wrist for all people worldwide and they strongly contest that their collection of watches using rainbow colours and having the message of peace and love could be harmful to whomever.

Motorola China’s official Weibo confirmed a total of 10,000 units of the new device were sold on the first day alone.

<p>
	The Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Plus is available in Singapore now at a princely price of <b>S$2,299</b> for folks who want immersive Dolby Atmos audio without wiring up their homes with multiple speakers.<br>
	<br>
	The much-heralded and costly soundbar – <a href="https://www.techgoondu.com/2021/11/03/goondu-review-sonos-beam-gen-2-soundbar-follows-a-winning-formula/" rel="external nofollow">Sonos’ versions</a> start at a fraction of the price, for example – is the latest foray into this emerging audio segment by the German headphones and professional audio manufacturer.<br>
	<br>
	The relatively compact soundbar is not to be confused with another similarly named one launched last year. That larger version, originally called Ambeo Soundbar, is now the Ambeo Soundbar Max.<br>
	<br>
	This new smaller brother still promises audiophile-quality sound with its 7.1.4 speaker setup, which would attract users who want a bit more from their movies.<br>
	<br>
	Like many soundbars today, the Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar Plus uses a self-calibration process to read a room’s acoustic properties. It then tries to project 11 virtual speakers around the user, who Sennheiser says should feel like there are seven around him and another four overhead.<br>
	<br>
	At least at a media listening session last week, the Ambeo Soundbar Plus sounded interesting and involving. The sounds from movies such as Kong: Skull Island, for example, do seem to be moving all around you. Not just left and right but also from above, which is impressive.<br>
	<br>
	The dialogue, as you’d expect, is also clearly audible in the front and centre, which is important to any home theatre experience.
