Concrete falls from Yishun flat ceiling, resident accuses HDB representative for being ‘passive-aggressive’

An Yishun resident was left shaken after chunks of concrete fell from her flat late at night, narrowly avoiding injury.

Jae, 39, said the incident happened at around 10.41pm last Saturday (11 April) at Block 146 Yishun.

Concrete fell from ceiling of 44-year-old flat

According to Jae, who works in leasing and facilities management, the flat is about 44 years old and this was the first time such an incident had occurred.

She said she had been “just chilling” at home when the concrete fell, adding that she was relieved it happened at night.

“Glad it didn’t happen in the day when I was cooking,” she told MS News, noting that the debris landed in an area she frequently uses.

She also expressed concern that more concrete could fall, saying she was “afraid the other part will fall off too”.

No injuries reported

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.

Jae, who has lived in the unit for nearly 39 years, said the timing of the incident likely prevented a more serious outcome.

Following the incident, Jae contacted the Housing and Development Board (HDB) for assistance.

However, she said she was offered only one inspection slot on 22 April, with the next available timing pushed to the end of May.

She was also told that slots in Yishun are limited to Mondays and Wednesdays.

Jae said she was unable to take leave as she is currently serving her notice period at work, and added that her mother, who has dementia, would not be able to handle the inspection alone.

Resident describes HDB officer as ‘passive aggressive’

According to Jae, the conversation with the HDB representative became frustrating when she asked if alternative timings, such as weekends, were possible.

She described him as “so passive-aggressive” when he spoke to her.

She added that she was informed payment would need to be made via PayNow or cash to a contractor on the day of rectification.

“Now how?” she said.

Feeling she had no viable option, Jae said she considered engaging a private contractor instead, though she was warned it would be costly.

The representative told her that such a move was “not worth it” as it would be “very expensive”.

However, Jae felt as though she had no choice but to find her own solution due to the scheduling conflicts.

When she indicated she might not proceed with HDB’s arrangement, she claimed the officer asked if she wanted to withdraw the case, to which she agreed.

With the issue unresolved, Jae said she is now left worried about the potential risk of further falling concrete in her home.

A heated argument erupted at Bugis+ after an elderly man allegedly bumped into a younger passer-by, during which the former insisted others should give way to him while the latter threatened legal action.

A video of the confrontation was later shared on the Instagram page @thesgdaily with a timestamp indicating that it occurred at about 4.18pm on April 12.

In the video, a man who identified himself as a “senior citizen” points the camera at a younger passer-by in the crowded mall.

“I harass you? You are the one who bumped into me,” the younger man says.

“Okay, I bump into you. So what?” the man behind the camera retaliates. “I apologise to you? I’m a senior citizen, you know.”

The younger man claims the older man had made eye contact with him while walking, but still bumped into him.

“You don’t know how to give way to senior citizen?” the older man asks, prompting the younger man to question whether he “cannot see other people walking”.

“I have a pacemaker. If anything happens to me, this will be (referred) to the authorities,” the older man says, challenging the other to take the matter to court.

The argument escalates as the older man repeatedly says, “Let the police come”, while the younger man demands his contact details, saying: “Let me sue you.”

Retired porn star Asia Carrera is on track to becoming a practicing lawyer in Texas.

The former adult entertainer took to social media this week to provide fans with a major update in her legal journey.

“I passed the bar exam!!!!” she wrote, raking in thousands of likes. “Asia Esquire, y’all!!!!!”

Carrera, who was born Jessica Steinhauser, said she took the “2-day 12-hour” test for the second time in Waco back in February.

“It was an unnerving feeling to look around this massive auditorium of almost 1000 leagle beagles all hunched over their laptops and typing furiously, and knowing ‘These are the people I’ve got to beat,’ But I think it went well!” she wrote on Facebook.

Carrera went on to reveal that she nearly scored well enough during her first attempt, but she felt much more “confident” this time around.

“I only missed passing by 2 points last time (268 out of 270), but I was still wobbly with the law and had borderline passing scores during my practice exams.

"This time I knew my (expletive) down cold, and I scored higher than 91% of my Barbri Bar Prep peers on the final exam,” she added.

TMZ confirmed Carrera was among those who were admitted to The State Bar of Texas.

She initially didn’t even want to be a lawyer, only to prove she could become one, according to the gossip site.

The victims were aged between eight and 10 years old at the time of the offences last year.

 SINGAPORE: A 64-year-old man who molested his two young granddaughters under the pretext of playing mobile phone games with them was jailed for five years, two months and four weeks on Friday (Apr 17).

At the time of the offences in 2025, his elder granddaughter was aged between nine and 10, while the younger was between eight and nine.

None of the parties can be named to protect the victims' identities.

The accused, a cleaner, pleaded guilty to two charges of aggravated molest in the State Courts. He resided with the two victims and other family members.

The court heard how the accused had a close relationship with his two granddaughters, who would regularly play board and mobile phone games with him while sitting on a sofa.

Last year, he began to feel aroused by the two girls and "felt tempted to perform sexual acts on them" court documents stated.

"The accused began to use the pretext of playing handphone games with the two victims to get them to sit next to him on the sofa," the prosecution said. He targeted them separately.

While each girl was distracted by the game, the accused would molest them either over their clothing or their bare skin.

The younger girl told a social worker that her grandfather had touched her private parts, leading to the eventual filing of a police report on Jan 31, 2026.

This girl reported experiencing flashbacks of the offences and would run away from the accused.

The man was arrested on Feb 6 this year. He was remanded for psychiatric assessment but was found not to be suffering from any mental disorder and was not intellectually disabled.

His risk of sexual reoffending was assessed to be at least moderate, particularly if he continued living with the victims.

The prosecution argued for a jail term of 46 to 53 months and 12 weeks.

For molesting a person under 14, an offender can be jailed up to five years, and/or fined, and/or caned. The accused cannot be caned as he is above 50. 

If the offence is against a victim in a close relationship, an offender can face twice the maximum penalty.

Seeing both perspectives, the OP suggested that “some level of control” allows for a neighbourhood to preserve its identity.

Furthermore, it could potentially slow down gentrification.

“You look at places like Chinatown and it feels like it has shifted heavily towards tourist shops, which kind of dilutes the local character,” the OP proposed.

However, they acknowledge that “putting limits” may backfire and instead cause things to stagnate.

“Maybe things like longer leases for local businesses could help them build a stronger presence.”

URA clarify majority of shophouse sales are to locals

Aware of the ongoing conversation of heritage places being taken over by foreign businesses, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) said that the majority of Kampong Glam shophouse buyers are local.

According to URA, shophouse sale transactions in Kampong Glam have declined by 60%. Haji Lane had a decline of three transactions per year from 2020 to 2022, to none from 2023 to 2025.

“Local buyers accounted for around three quarters of these transactions between 2020 and 2025,” URA said in their Facebook post.

The authorities acknowledge the struggles that local businesses are facing in the current environment due to “evolving market conditions and changing consumer preferences”.

“The Government remains committed to working closely with our partner agencies and stakeholders in the community to address these issues and support the sustenance of the district’s unique character,” URA added.

URA no longer allows any additional souvenir shops in Kampong Glam, in addition to existing restrictions on new bars, pubs, nightclubs, karaoke lounges, and western fast-food restaurants.

A Bukit Panjang household has been cooking outside their HDB unit, sparking safety concerns among a nearby resident.

Stomper Catwoman said the situation at the ground floor of Block 245 Bukit Panjang Ring Road has been ongoing for at least two years, and may have started even earlier — before she moved in — based on what other neighbours have shared.

The Stomper, who lives two blocks away, added that she has seen a couple cooking outside the unit on several occasions.

“They even installed a big permanent outdoor umbrella with a big table,” said Catwoman.

The Stomper shared photos she had taken over the past two months, showing what appears to be a makeshift cooking station outside the unit. A long table, wooden chairs and cooking equipment such as metal pots and a stove can be seen under a large parasol.

What worries her most, however, is the presence of a gas cylinder.

“The gas cylinder is placed under the big table with other big pots,” said Catwoman. “When the wind blows, you can see it clearly.”

The Stomper also raised concerns about clutter and hygiene.

“Last month, when the couple cooked big pots of gravy and rice, they left the drains around that area very smelly. The smell lingered for many days,” she claimed.

“Apart from cooking, they also put a lot of things outside their house.”

Catwoman said she reported the issue to the town council in 2025 and 2026, but little appears to have changed.

“Up to this day, nothing has been done to clear the items. The town council said last year that they would advise the unit, but the unit is still cooking. They also haven’t removed their big table, big pots, big umbrella and gas cylinder.

“How come this is even allowed?”

Town council engages resident, issues advisory

In response to a Stomp query, Holland–Bukit Panjang Town Council said it is aware of the situation.

“We have engaged the resident to advise against conducting such activities in the common areas, including the placement of personal belongings and cooking equipment outside the unit,” the town council said.

In consideration of safety, hygiene and accessibility concerns, an advisory notice has been issued to reinforce the importance of keeping common areas clear and unobstructed.

The town council added that its conservancy team has been deployed to carry out necessary cleaning of the affected area, and it will continue to monitor the situation closely.

A near-miss at a zebra crossing apparently infuriated an involved pedestrian, who gave the passing cyclist a shove.

This quickly led to a confrontation at the roadside, with a nearby driver momentarily joining in.

Cyclist pushes bicycle and argues with pedestrian

According to the footage timestamp, the incident happened on Wednesday (15 April) at 1.48pm.

The camcar drove behind a bicycle as they approached a zebra crossing across China Street in Raffles Place.

At the time, two pedestrians were walking across on the zebra crossing. The cyclist quickly swerved away and avoided hitting them.

The cyclist promptly rolled his bicycle to the roadside to confront the pedestrian, who appeared to be arguing with him.

“You don’t liddat push people’s bicycle, he will fall down!” The camcar driver shouted out of the window as he passed by.

He was met with more arguing off-screen, with the two involved speaking over each other.

“Just post on Facebook lah!” The driver told him. As the car drove off, the argument appeared to continue.

The driver also criticised the pedestrian to another occupant, saying he should have waited an extra second to avoid any sort of altercation.
