You don’t look a day over 30 lives.

On this very day in 1986, a piece of code was accidentally left in the Famicom (NES) version of Konami’s Gradius that allowed anyone to completely juice up their spaceship by pressing up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, then A on the controller. And so began the legendary “Konami Code”, which really caught on in the West as a way to get 30 lives in Contra.

And in celebration of the cheat code’s 40th anniversary, Konami has opened a commemorative webpage on the official site for its Project Zircon. The largely user-built world of this Web3 game platform is still under development, but is expected to include the Konami Code somehow as it grows.

Also, in honor of the Guinness World Record holder for most famous cheat code, a line of T-shirts is being sold through Amazon’s Merch on Demand service, which prints each shirt as it’s ordered.

The girl pictured on some of those shirts is Nami-chan, The Konami Maniac. Through her web manga made by Shota Hattori, she shares her love of all things Konami from old to new, including the burgeoning Project Zircon. Hattori is also the current artist behind the long-running Nippen no Miko-chan, the mascot for the Japanese penmanship society, Nippen. Her manga can also be found online as she continues to fight the good fight for proper penmanship in the digital era.

But that’s not all. Konami will also be releasing the music from six Gradius and Gradius-adjacent games on all major streaming and download platforms, as well as many not-so-major Japanese ones.

I’m going to explain these titles, and I apologize in advance if this causes headaches or nausea. The first game is the Famicom version of the original Gradius game, not to be confused with the original arcade game, which was called Nemesis outside of Japan. The soundtrack for Nemesis is also available, but not the one I just mentioned. The Game Boy game based on Gradius was also called Nemesis, both in Japan and abroad. Music from Nemesis II is also available, but this is not the game made for the MSX home computer in 1987. It’s the sequel to the Game Boy version, which was called Gradius: The Interstellar Assault outside of Japan.

Are you still with me? Good, because we’re only halfway through. There’s also the music from Gradius II, which shouldn’t be mistaken for the sequel to Gradius, because that’s actually Salamander, which is known as Life Force outside of Japan. The music from that is available too, though. Finally, there’s also the soundtrack to Gradius III for the Super Famicom, the fourth mainline title and sixth game of its kind made.

It’s a bit of a shame that up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a is more associated with Gradius than Contra in Japan, because that game had some really badass music. Maybe, we can get it when the code’s 50th anniversary rolls around.

In the meantime, why not celebrate today by blowing into a cartridge of your favorite Konami classic and letting the muscle memory of your fingers take over for some added bonuses?

In response to queries from The Straits Times on March 9, the police said a 36-year-old man had been arrested for voluntarily causing hurt against a young person after a police report was lodged. They did not say when the man was arrested.

In an Instagram post on March 6, the boy’s mother Faezah Hamid said that the child was slapped twice outside his pre-school in Woodlands at around noon that day.

Madam Faezah, citing the family helper’s account of the incident, said her son had shown one of his classmates the middle finger after he was caught during a game of “catching”.

The suspect, whom she said was the father of her son’s classmate, then grabbed the boy by the collar and slapped his face.

When the helper intervened and attempted to pull the boy away, the man allegedly continued holding on to the boy and slapped his other cheek, which made the child cry.

“This happened in front of other parents, helpers and children outside the school,” said Madam Faezah.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Speaking to ST on March 9, Madam Faezah said: “The whole incident actually is very traumatising for my son, but he can hide it very, very well. He masks his feelings. And this is very worrying for a four-year-old kid.”

The 44-year-old lecturer in a tertiary institution said the boy has been afraid to return to school and chose to stay home on March 9. “I don’t feel safe to send my son there.”

She said the pre-school teachers had told her the man had gone back to the school after slapping the child and told teachers what he did, to justify “disciplining” her son.

“He’s a toddler, he’s still using a diaper... A four-year-old cannot be abused by any adult.”

Madam Faezah said Sembawang GRC MP Mariam Jaafar has reached out to her.

When contacted, Ms Mariam referred ST to a comment she had posted on Madam Faezah’s Instagram account on March 7 about the incident. In her comment, she said the incident happened after school hours and outside the school but the school will assist the police.

“Let the police complete the investigations and focus now on helping Isaac recover and feel safe. It is also a good moment to remember that we can all step up and help when we see something bad happen before us. Let’s take care of one another especially, of our children,” said Ms Mariam.

The incident happened at about 1.10am along Balam Road on Friday (March 6). 

Police said the three teenagers allegedly met with a 34-year-old man, claiming they wanted to purchase One Piece trading cards worth about $8,000. They ended up assaulting him and stealing the items.

The male victim sustained minor injuries and was taken conscious to hospital.

Officers from Bedok Police Division arrested the three teenagers within 16 hours of the report through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras. The stolen items were recovered.

A 17-year-old male teenager will be charged in court on Monday for robbery causing hurt. 

The said offence carries a penalty of up to 20 years jail and at least 12 strokes of the cane. 

Police said the two other teenagers are assisting with ongoing investigations.

Valve has announced Counter-Strike 2, the newest iteration of the greatest and most popular competitive FPS in history. The developer says "Counter-Strike 2 is an overhaul to every system, every piece of content, and every part of the C-S experience."

There are a series of videos accompanying the announcement, explaining how Counter-Strike 2 will change everything. There are currently three, embedded below, addressing smokes, moving beyond tick rates, and changes to maps. 

As regards the idea of moving beyond tick rates, here's the official explanation.

"Sub-tick updates are the heart of Counter-Strike 2. Previously, the server only evaluated the world in discrete time intervals (called ticks). Thanks to Counter-Strike 2’s sub-tick update architecture, servers know the exact instant that motion starts, a shot is fired, or a ‘nade is thrown. As a result, regardless of tick rate, your moving and shooting will be equally responsive and your grenades will always land the same way."

The game is going to run a limited test, which you can read about here (opens in new tab), and is due to fully launch in the summer.

"Counter-Strike 2 is the largest technical leap forward in Counter-Strike’s history, ensuring new features and updates for years to come," said Valve. "All of the game’s new features will be revealed when it officially launches this summer, but the road to Counter-Strike 2 begins today as a Limited Test for select CS:GO players. During this testing period, we’ll be evaluating a subset of features to shake out any issues before the worldwide release."

Amazingly enough, Counter-Strike 2 is going to be a free upgrade to CS: GO. This was always going to be huge but keeping the free-to-play model guarantees it will prove massively popular at launch and for many years to come. Even more amazingly, everything carries over:

A Minecraft player has achieved a feat no one else has, simply by walking to the end of the game’s procedurally generated map.

As spotted by Jake Lucky (opens in new tab) on Twitter, Twitch streamer Mystical Midget started the grand trek to the end of Minecraft on January 31, 2021. Since then, they have managed to walk 32,000,000 blocks over 2,500 hours of playtime. Like many players who have picked up the challenge, the streamer is playing on an old Minecraft Beta build. Specifically, they were using Minecraft Beta 1.7.3, which is now 11 years old.

You can see when the streamer accomplished the feat below, cheered on by their pals. So it goes when players try to stretch what Minecraft is mechanically capable of, the game’s engine begins to struggle to load in all the surrounding textures, though you don’t see much of that as the streamer’s character is looking at their feet. 

Eventually, the game gives up, and the streamer tumbles through the map, drowning in general nothingness as their avatar lets out Minecraft's signature ‘oof!’ numerous times before perishing while everyone watching the streamer cheers.

Testing what Minecraft’s procedurally generated map is capable of is a popular pastime for some of the game’s most dedicated fans. The pilgrimage to Minecraft’s ‘Far Lands’ isn’t about reaching a destination but a state where a glitch starts to warp the terrain around you. 

That glitch is only present in some of the older versions of Minecraft, and you’re typically looking at travelling over 12 million blocks (opens in new tab) before you even see it – if you make it that far.

Game developer Valve has announced that it permanently banned more than 40,000 accounts for using cheating software to gain an unfair advantage over other players in the Dota 2 game.

The cheat gave players access to internal client app information that is not visible during normal gameplay, thus obtaining a competitive advantage.

Dota 2 is a popular multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game. It has a professional competition scene with numerous tournaments and leagues for all playing levels.

Success in Dota 2 relies on strategic thinking, quick reflexes, and teamwork.

An unhealthy competitive spirit pushes some players to seek alternative means to gain an advantage over their opponents, and there's an entire industry of third-party cheats that accommodates that demand.

To maintain a fair playing environment for everyone to enjoy, it is crucial for Valve to identify and stop the use of these cheats as quickly as possible.

Setting up a honeypot

In this case, Valve developed a patch that acted as a honeypot, catching requests on areas that shouldn't be queried or monitored by the gaming app.

"This patch created a honeypot: a section of data inside the game client that would never be read during normal gameplay, but that could be read by these exploits," Valve explains.

After the Dota 2 gaming community applied the patch, which is a mandatory requirement to join multiplayer games, it was revealed that over 40,000 accounts were using the cheating software.

This makes it one of the most prevalent cheats ever seen in the game's history.

Valve says it decided to publicize this crackdown case, which is just one of the many they carry out in its effort to fight cheaters, to pass a clear message to all players, including professionals who take part in official Valve events, that using software to read data from the client during playtime will result in permanent account bans.

It should be noted that game cheats are often a threat as they can also infect players’ computers with info-stealing malware and cryptocurrency miners.

At the start of this month, security researchers discovered malicious Dota 2 game modes on Steam, which exploited a flaw in the game to infect players with malware.

BEIJING, CHINA — Chinese players of roleplaying epic “World of Warcraft” bade a sad farewell to the land of Azeroth on Monday, with the game set to go offline after a dispute between US developer Blizzard and local partner NetEase.

Massively popular worldwide, particularly in the 2000s, “World of Warcraft” — often abbreviated as WoW — is an online multiplayer role playing game set in a fantasy-Medieval world where good battles evil.

It is known for its immersive and addicting gameplay, and players can rack up hundreds of hours of game time.

Blizzard’s games have been available in China since 2008, through collaboration with internet giant NetEase — under local law, foreign developers are required to partner with Chinese firms to enter the market.

But after 14 years and millions of players in China, the two firms announced in November that talks over renewing their operating contract had failed to lead to an agreement.

As a result, WoW’s Chinese servers will go offline Tuesday at midnight local time (1600 GMT).

Other popular titles by the Californian gaming giant — one of the world’s biggest — will suffer the same fate, including “Overwatch”, “Diablo III” and “Hearthstone”.

“It’s the end,” wrote one Weibo user, accompanied by crying emojis.

“It was not just a game. It was also the memories of a whole generation” of young Chinese, another wrote.

“The two companies have taken players hostage,” Wu, a 30-year-old doctoral student and a longtime fan, told AFP.

Last week, Blizzard China said it had requested an exceptional six-month contract extension — which NetEase refused.

“One day, when what has happened behind the scene could be told, developers and gamers will have a whole new level understanding of how much damage a jerk can make,” NetEase’s President Simon Zhu wrote on LinkedIn late last year.

Blizzard had said it was in “discussions” with “several potential partners who share our values” to continue to offer its titles in China.

The deactivation of its Chinese servers is not “the end” but just a “temporary unhappy suspension”, Blizzard China said.

User data can be saved, for use if and when the games return to China, according to the American company.

But doctoral student Wu — who said he played WoW up to three hours a day — saw the good side of the story.

“I didn’t give my wife enough time. Now that ‘World of Warcraft’ is gone, I want to make amends,” he said.

In Arcadia, 25 miles east of Los Angeles at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains in California, the sun beats down at 90 degrees Fahrenheit, even in winter. But in the middle of a strip mall surrounded by cash-only ramen restaurants, inside the Dreamlab Technologies(Opens in a new window) LAN center, it remains cool and dark. 

I'm at Dreamlab to test a pre-release ORB X(Opens in a new window), a $15,000 semi-enclosed gamer pod/workstation from Cooler Master. The unit is 6 by 6 feet, made of vacuum forming thermoplastic polymer and surrounded by an Addressable RGB (ARGB) LED strip that glows in heliotrope neon, like something out of a sci-fi series. It presents a unique take on the gaming chair, and could also appeal to traditional offices, if you can justify the cost. Here's what to expect.

From Inside the ORB X 

I get distinct Mork and Mindy vibes from the egg-like structure, but a quick glance around the LAN center and I am pretty sure a “Mork Calling Orson” reference wouldn’t fly there.

Once inside the ORB X cockpit, I flip manually through the various headrest and lumbar settings, using the remote controller to bring up the footrest on the ergonomic leather gaming chair. Meanwhile, the fully automated shuttle dome moves down toward me, shunting the 34-inch monitor into position in front of my face.

You can switch out the large screen for three 27-inch monitors, if you prefer, and the ORB X comes with HDMI cables that can support 4K resolution. By pressing down on the larger of the console buttons for 5 seconds, you can also save personal settings, so everything—including the monitor height—will be at your chosen specifications on subsequent sessions. 

A mid-gameplay session of Apex Legends is paused on the monitor for me. I start hitting the W, S, A and D keys to hunt down villains on the horizon and get a feel for the ORB X as a gaming environment, which is encompassing yet not entirely isolating. The custom-built, 2.1 spatial audio system includes two full-range speakers and a subwoofer, so the immersive backdrop of surround sound is complete.

The Orb X Origin Story 

Lucy Hung, Senior Marketing Manager at Cooler Master, flew in from the company’s Taipei HQ and joined me at Dreamlab Technologies to walk me through the inspiration and production process behind the ORB X. 

I (reluctantly) exit the unit to let Ben, one of the company’s gaming specialists, take over on Apex Legends; see him in action in the video below.

“The Cooler Master ORB X was developed by the CMIMX team in Taiwan,” Hung explains. “This is a newly developed team at Cooler Master Technology with a mission to perfect and enhance the immersive experience for users through community-driven innovation and collaboration. By integrating hardware and software as well as incorporating next-gen technologies such as VR, AR, and haptics, we aim to take the overall user experience to the next level.” 

The only thing I think is missing from the ORB X is advanced haptics, similar to the 4DX cinema experience. While actively gaming, or watching immersive entertainment, the ability to add to sensations through motion effects, like pitch and roll, would be welcome.

Hung says it’s on the Cooler Master production schedule. "We’re targeting 2023 for upgrades, including focusing on the haptic function of the recliner."

While many manufacturers hire third-party design agencies to bring them the cool factor, Hung says this device was designed and developed solely in-house. It also appears to be part of a larger vision to get Cooler Master from a PC DIY company into more of the tech lifestyle category. 

Specs, Price, and Customization

If your tech lifestyle can run to $15,499, you can pre-order the ORB X this month. But that’s the price for the station only. If you want customization, or added complexity in the setup, the price will go up.

Current customization focuses on the shell color (Universe Black or Arctic White) and gaming chair (brown or black), with lead times depending on the level of complexity. The ARGB also has eight mode effects.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, will pay $520 million to settle allegations of violating children's privacy laws and using dark patterns to trick millions of gamers into making unintentional in-game purchases.

While Fortnite is free to download and play, Epic charges players for in-game items like dance moves and costumes. Fortnite has a huge player base of more than 400 million users worldwide, according to the FTC.

The settlement includes a record-breaking $275 million monetary penalty for violating the COPPA Rule, the largest penalty ever for violating an FTC rule, as well as a $245 million refund for consumers affected by Epic's billing practices and dark patterns, FTC's largest administrative order ever and the largest gaming case refund amount in history.

The FTC alleged in its complaint that Fortnite's creator violated COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) by harvesting personal information from Fortnite players under 13 years old without notifying or obtaining their verifiable consent from their parents.

Epic's decision to enable real-time voice and text chat communications by default for children and teens also allegedly put them at risk of bullying, harassment, and other forms of harm.

"As early as 2017, Epic employees urged the company to change the default settings to require users to opt in for voice chat, citing concern about the impact on children in particular," the FTC said.

"Despite this and reports that children had been harassed, including sexually, while playing the game, the company resisted turning off the default settings. And while it eventually added a button allowing users to turn voice chat off, Epic made it difficult for users to find, according to the complaint."

Besides the $275 million record civil penalty imposed through a proposed federal court order, Epic will also be required to make text and voice communications in Fortnite an opt-in feature for children and teens that can only be enabled with the parents' affirmative consent through a privacy setting.

Millions of "wrongfully charged" gamers

In addition to the COPPA violations, the FTC also alleged in a separate administrative complaint that Epic employed dark patterns to dupe Fortnite players, including children and teenagers, into making unwanted in-game purchases.

Some of the dark patterns used to achieve this included various confusing purchase prompts and misleading offers that led the gamers to make purchases they had no intention of making.

"For example, players could be charged while attempting to wake the game from sleep mode, while the game was in a loading screen, or by pressing an adjacent button while attempting simply to preview an item," the FTC explained.

"These tactics led to hundreds of millions of dollars in unauthorized charges for consumers."

The company also allegedly charged account holders (the children and teens' parents) hundreds of dollars without authorization and locked players' accounts after they disputed the unauthorized charges.

On top of having to pay $245 million in refunds to affected customers and being ordered to stop using dark patterns or charging customers without their consent, Epic is also barred from blocking players' access to their accounts after they dispute unauthorized charges.

"Epic ignored more than one million user complaints and repeated employee concerns that 'huge' numbers of users were being wrongfully charged," the FTC added.

"In fact, Epic's changes only made the problem worse, the FTC alleged. Using internal testing, Epic purposefully obscured cancel and refund features to make them more difficult to find."

Fortnite creator makes privacy and payment changes

Epic Games also issued a statement on Monday, saying that it has improved Fortnite's default privacy settings to comply with FTC's rules and changed payment flows to prevent unwanted charges.

"In September, we implemented high privacy default settings for players under the age of 18. Chat defaults to “Nobody," profile details default to hidden, parties default to 'Invite Only,' and personalized recommendations are defaulted Off. Players under 16 also have the mature language filter defaulted On for text chat," the company said.

"We’ve updated our payment flows with a hold-to-purchase mechanic that re-confirms a player’s intent to buy, as an additional safeguard to prevent unintended purchases alongside instant purchase cancellations and self-service refunds. "

No, it's not just your imagination — self-identified "gamers" are indeed more racist and sexist than the general populace. But now there's science backing up the obvious.

"When the gamer identity is very core to who you are as a person, that seems to reflect what we call toxic gamer culture, tends to reflect more exclusion than inclusion — so things like racism and sexism and misogyny," Rachel Kowert, the research director at the nonprofit Take This, which provides mental health services to the gaming industry, told Vice in an interview about her organization's research.

Published in the journal Frontiers in Communication, Kowert and her team's paper builds on three studies they conducted that looked into the beliefs of hundreds of self-described gamers.

"We have individual identities and social identities. So I am Rachel, I am a female, and I'm a gamer. I love The Witcher. These are my social identities and are separate," the Canada-based researcher told Vice. "Identity fusion is when the social identity, the individual identity, fuses together and you can't tear them apart… The way in which fusion is shown to develop makes them more susceptible to more extreme behaviors."

Similarly to soldiers or gang members, she said, it can become difficult to extricate the social identity from an individual's self-identification — and once that process occurs, people who've gone through identity fusion become more susceptible to "extreme pro-group behavior," Kowert said.

For many who identify themselves as gamers and feel left out of other in-groups, the sense of community is, as the researchers' wrote in their paper, "a double-edged sword." While they experience the positive social aspects of belonging to a group, the gamers surveyed by Kowert et al. are also exposed to lots of hate speech and other kinds of toxicity that non-gamers would likely recognize from sites like Reddit and 4chan.

"In the worst-case scenario," the paper's authors wrote, "gamers may be lured into embracing extremist beliefs that lead them down the path to radicalization."

To see how different content affects gamers' social attitudes, the study focused specifically on those who play "Call of Duty" and others who play "Minecraft" — and unsurprisingly found that the "Call of Duty" crowd tended to be more hateful than their blocky counterparts.

"This can vary across communities depending on what kind of people that you are spending a lot of your time with," Kowert told Vice. "I don't think it's necessarily about content but about the community in which you're being immersed."

The researcher-cum-gaming-enthusiast noted that further study on this phenomenon needs to be conducted to better understand it, and cautioned that too much shouldn't be read into their findings, too.

"I think that games are wonderful places that have more positive things to offer than negative things across the board," she concluded. "I think it's important that we have the conversation that games are being leveraged in this way, because we're not having that conversation, and therefore we can't mitigate it if we don't have the conversation."

The big picture: Minecraft players have built everything from well-known architectural designs to functioning supercomputers. But Minecraft aficionado Christopher Slayton decided it was time to go bigger. And by bigger we mean he recreated the entire known universe using only Minecraft's in-game resources.

Minecraft players have been creating enormous, complex creations for years, but Christopher Slayton's latest project may have just earned him the crown as the new king of Minecraft builds. Slayton, also known on YouTube as ChrisDaCow, spent two months studying, recreating, and sharing the wonders of the cosmos using nothing but Minecraft materials and mods. The results are nothing short of stunning, especially given the medium and the amount of time spent building it.

Following his initial Reddit post to r/Minecraftbuilds, Slayton's video has unsurprisingly received more than 3.2 million views and his subscriber count has risen to well over 225,000. The video, which is also well produced in its own right, follows the Minecraft enthusiast's journey to not only build but also understand our planet, solar system, and everything that lies beyond.

The video begins with Slayton's hands-on approach to gathering information, which involves him skydiving for inspiration on how to start building our own planet. Slayton told the New York Times that the journey from idea to a finished recreation of the universe made him "...realize even more how beautiful it is."

Slayton accurately recreated the Pillars of Creation nebula

One of Slayton's many challenges along the way was finding a realistic method to recreate light's behavior in space and then applying it to his newly constructed celestial bodies. Slayton used a number of Minecraft build mods, including World Edit, galaxy texture packs, Distant Horizons, Optifine, and other tools to create the desired look and lighting effects.

Slayton says recreating one of the universe's most powerful forces was his biggest challenge

Slayton's efforts are extraordinary considering the amount of research, calculation, design, and application required to construct each element of the model. At one point in the video, Slayton can be heard asking, "What am I doing with my life? I've been sitting in this tiny, sweaty room for eight hours trying to build the curve of a black hole." His hard work has undoubtedly paid off given the viral reaction to his creation.

Slayton hopes to continue developing elaborate Minecraft creations. If his model of the universe is any sign of what he has planned for the future, then we also hope he continues. Gameplay is considered easy as i 'm a diablo player since D1. Game reminds me of D3 except it's on mobile but with micro transactions. 

Sea server got quite a number of pinoy/indon players. East asia server got a lot of political quarrel between tw,china players. Oceania server still ok. 

Elden Ring took the world by storm earlier this year, but of the millions of players, one rose above the rest: Klein Tsuboi, AKA “Let Me Solo Her.” Weidling nothing but dual katanas and a pot on his head, he helped other players kill one of the game’s toughest bosses thousands of times. Now publisher Bandai Namco has finally gotten around to sending him an official swag box, complete with a personal thank you note and real life sword.

“It’s here,” Tsuboi tweeted on Thursday alongside photos of the package he received. “Thank you Bandai Namco and Elden Ring for giving me this gift and congratulating me for being #LetMeSoloHer.”

In addition to the sword and personalized note was a cloak like the one Melina wears and some other trinkets. The package is similar to the one Wheel of Time author Brandon Sanderson received earlier this year after praising the game at length, and while not unique, still includes a literal sword.

Tsuboi started making waves in the Elden Ring community back in April. Players taking on the optional late-game boss Malenia would summon a random internet stranger to help them out. When Tsuboi was the one who showed up buttnaked, he’d tell the other player to “let me solo her.”

And he would, making short work of the notoriously tough foe. As word of his deeds spread across Reddit and social media, he gained a reputation for his naked heroics. By May he’d soloed Malenia over 1,000 times. Elden Ring mods were made in his honor. A new FromSoftware legend was born.

“I can still remember my first experience with the soulsborne series and almost quitting because of Iudex Gundyr in Dark souls 3,” Tsuoboi tweeted yesterday, after receiving his official recognition from the publisher. “I’m glad I persisted and went on to enjoy the game, because this community is one of the most passionate and dedicated people I’ve ever seen in a game, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

He went on to call out specific individuals within the community who had inspired him, naming Vaati, Fighter .Pl, IronPineapple, ChasetheBro, Zullie, LimitBreakers, and BonfireVN among others. It’s unclear what’s next for the Elden Ring star, but FromSoftware has said an expansion for the game is coming. The studio is also already hard at work on a number of new projects, at least one of which famed director Hidetaka Miyazaki said was nearly complete and could be announced in the not too distant future.
