    • S'porean man loses S$500,000 on 1 basketball game, girlfriend of 6 years breaks up 2 weeks before collecting keys to BTO - Mothership.SG - News from Singapore, Asia and around the world   https://mothership.sg/2026/06/sporean-man-lost-500000-gambling/   S'porean man loses S$500,000 on 1 basketball game, girlfriend of 6 years breaks up 2 weeks before collecting keys to BTO   A 32-year-old Singaporean man, who chose to remain anonymous, opened up to Lianhe Zaobao about how gambling wrecked his life — culminating in losing half a million dollars in a single bet, going bankrupt, facing criminal charges, and losing his long-term partner right before they got their new home.   How it all started   His addiction began back in 2013 during National Service. Posted to an admin role with lots of free time, he started betting on football matches. Early wins made him think it was easy money, and he got hooked fast. By university, he was already using online betting sites and visiting casinos regularly. He recalled: “All I could think about was placing the next bet, enjoying the thrill of winning, and trying to win back what I had lost.”   Debts, lies and broken relationships   To feed his habit, he borrowed from almost everyone he knew — friends, relatives, colleagues — at one point owing nearly 70 people. He stole cash from his mother and even pawned her jewellery, until his family kicked him out. The worst blow: his girlfriend of six years ended their relationship just two weeks before they were supposed to collect keys to their BTO flat, shattering their plans of building a life together.   By 2020, his debts snowballed to over S$1 million. He was declared bankrupt, charged with fraud and criminal breach of trust, and hit rock bottom. That was when he first sought help from Blessed Grace Social Services.   The S$500,000 bet   Counselling went well for eight months — then he relapsed. This time, he hit a big “win”: nearly S$600,000 from free credits on a gambling site. Instead of stopping, he put aside S$100,000 for insurance and bet the remaining S$500,000 all on one basketball game.   His team led almost the whole match… only to lose in the final 30 seconds. In an instant, every cent was gone. He fell straight back into the cycle: lose → borrow → gamble again.   Second chance, second recovery   He later got back together with a new partner, who knew his history and gave him another chance. But in 2025, he crossed a line: he borrowed money from her family by lying that it was for their marriage proposal. She brought him back to Blessed Grace Social Services in July 2025 for a second round of counselling. Today, all his debts are cleared, and he is in recovery.   Looking back, he said: “Gambling turned my life upside down and hurt the people closest to me. I deeply regret it.”       This story is part of a feature on recovery from gambling addiction, highlighting how quickly what feels like harmless fun can spiral into debt, crime, and loss of everything you care about.
