Rammstein-Reaction.png.11896305aab42c91edb7f545196421c4.png

WATCH: K-POP FAN REACTS TO RAMMSTEIN’S ‘DEUTSCHLAND’ VIDEO

We've already showed you what Germans actually think of Rammstein and now it's time to get a raw and honest reaction to their music from a K-pop fan. This should be good, right?

YouTube user GiddyKitty watched the video for Rammstein's new song "Deutschland" for the first time, completely unaware of what the band sounds like and that their imagery can sometimes be violent, sexually-charged and provocative.

The dark cinematic overtones that precede the music in the video leave her clutching her pearls at first. "Shit, shit, shit," she says, fearing what's still to come. When the song does begin, GiddyKitty is caught off guard by the distorted guitars. To be fair, we don't expect a K-pop fan to be familiar with heavy distortion just like we aren't familiar with K-pop... well, aside from "Gangnam Style."

"I'm really enjoying the song  — the music video is weird, plain weird, but not too, like, gory," she comments early on.

Despite all of the political imagery in the video, which is based on some of Germany's regrettable past, GiddyKitty's most taken aback exclamation comes when someone in the video hoists a gnarly looking cat into the air like some demented recreation of that one scene in The Lion King. When the cat appears again, she's still in shock, singling it out. Meanwhile, Nazi officers point rifles in the faces of concentration camp prisoners.

After the song finished, GiddyKitty offered her summation of "Deutschland." "Honestly, I kind of really liked it," she assessed. "The beat just sounded like an anthem." She ultimately concludes that she now likes "hard rock" and asks for more suggestions from viewers.

Watch the full reaction in the video below.

Track Premiere: All Hell – ‘Sorcery and Sanctity’

ALLHELLalbumcover-1170x1170.thumb.jpg.274c7cbbd194516f90b661645f011d38.jpg

Blackened thrash trio All Hell finally emerge from their crypt armed with new album The Witch’s Grail, due for a release this June on Prosthetic. The follow-up to 2017’s underrated The Grave Alchemist, The Witch’s Grail sees All Hell continue to expand on the gothic and punk tendencies that have always been an essential part of the band’s sound.

To give a taste of the album, All Hell have offered up “Sorcery and Sanctity,” the first song from The Witch’s Grail.

“We are beyond excited to finally announce and reveal our new album,” All Hell tell Decibel. “The Witch’s Grailis a transgressive journey over ten tracks, exploring the opposing themes of Nature and the Unnatural, Sanctity and Sin and Decadence and Decay in worlds both Visible and Invisible. It is an exploration of an unremembered past and a meditation on True Evil, heavily inspired by the Decadent Movement and its associated artists and authors. Sorcery and Sanctity represents the beginning of this new journey, and, while the album is rather diverse. We feel this song is a good introduction to its sounds and themes. Join us, and drink from The Witch’s Grail.”

LIQUID DEATH’S ‘PUNK ROCK’ WATER IN A CAN RAISES $2.25 MILLION

Thirsty but need your water to be as extreme and rebellious as you are? Mercifully, Liquid Death, the new punk rock water in a can startup business has just raised $1.6 million in seed money (bringing their overall total to $2.25 million) and you'll soon start to "murder your thirst," as the slogan states.

CEO Mike Cessario, a former creative director at Netflix, is backed by central figures at Twitter, Dollar Shave Club and Away luggage. Tired of playing by standard rules, he created a water brand that spoke to a direct market — punk rock and metal fans.

"When we first started, we wondered why is it that products and [consumer packaged goods] products have to play by these 1950's bland and boring rules, while other entertainment things can play by much more fun rules," Cessario told Business Insider.

"At first we knew the easiest crowd for us is anyone into heavy metal, punk rock, and that kind of world because they immediately get the joke and get the humor and have never seen anything like it," the CEO continued. "What makes this appealing for such a large group is that it feels like a niche thing."

Liquid-Death.thumb.png.3fe74a8a1c03580030a7b82b631f3bfd.png

While part of the inspiration came from Cessario's straight-edge friends not having a brand that spoke to them. "If you think about it, it makes sense, everything metal and punk is extreme," Cessario explained. "Being vegan is extreme, protesting the deforestation is extreme. There are more vegans at a heavy metal show than a Taylor Swift show. We are by far the most sustainable option for packaged water, which is a big driver for why people want to buy from us."

He admitted the product is targeted but not restrictive, leaving Liquid Death open to the entirety of the portable water market.

The water, which is only available for purchaseonline, is sourced from Austrian mountains and comes in 12-pack tallboy cans. Liquid Death will also donate five cents from every can sold to help remove plastic from the ocean.

Creator behind Watain petition lists more upcoming heavy metal concerts in Singapore

5cd963762100005800d065da.jpg.16b5347648f59405e894b90879b1f33c.jpg

SINGAPORE — The person behind the petition created in March calling for two Swedish heavy metal bands to be banned from performing in Singapore has added more bands to it.

In an update to the petition on Monday (13 May) titled “More extreme (death and black) metal bands scheduled to perform in Singapore” on the petition’s page, Rachel Chan named Dutch death metal band Pestilence, Metal United World Wide, a concert featuring eight metal bands, and Canadian death metal band Cryptopsy.

The upcoming concerts are set to take place 7 June, 15 June, and 5 July, respectively. According to its Facebook page, the Metal United World Wide will feature death metal bands such as Kaliyuga, E-thereal and The Wandering Ascetic.

Chan also included Wikipedia definitions of the death metal and black metal genres. She called on the public to email their concerns to the government feedback channel [email protected] and copy them to the Prime Minister’s Office at [email protected].

Her original petition, which was created on 6 March, resulted in an 11th hour ban of Swedish black metal band Watain’s concert in Singapore, which was scheduled the next day.

The petition, addressed to the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, has garnered over 23,000 signatures as of Monday night.

Explaining the reason for the ban then, Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam said at a doorstop interview on 7 March that allowing Watain’s concert to be held will be “against public order interest” and “affect our religious and social harmony”.

Shanmugam noted that the band’s music is “very offensive towards Christians, Jews, supportive of violence, including encouraging the burning of churches.”

Following the ban, the organiser behind Soilwork, the other band mentioned in the original petition, said on Facebook the band would play “as planned” on 29 October.

When asked if Soilwork’s concert will be banned, an IMDA spokesperson said “each performance is assessed on a case-by-case basis”.

Soilwork’s concert is still listed in Chan’s updated petition.

Full Demo Stream: Inferno Requiem – “Wolf from Onon Realm”

unnamed-3-1170x1170.thumb.jpg.5d5c3ba6dd403bd78df805f669f09e47.jpg

The Taiwanese/Japan-based black metal band Inferno Requiem released their debut twenty years ago. Since then the band—whose main and only consistent member is one man known as Fog—have steadily carved out their own unique style from the fundamentals of the underground black metal sound. Over the past twenty years, Inferno Requiem’s output has been far more meaningful than prolific. Rather than putting out demo after split after full length after rehearsal recording, Inferno Requiem have released only two full lengths and a few EPs, and so their discography, as a result, is flawless and incisive.

Today, in cooperation with Death Kvlt Productions, Inferno Requiem announces Wolf from Onon Realm, the first of several EPs “in a consecutive series” concerned with, according to Fog himself, “the legendary Mongolian Golden Horde of the 13th century.”

13-YEAR-OLD CRUSHES OPPONENTS AT GUITAR SHRED COMPETITION

Share

On Gear Factor, powered by Sweetwater, we typically give you rockers playing the instrumental pieces that first inspired them, but it’s sometimes fun to see a good ol’ shred competition. Thankfully, The Music Experience’s Squiggy was on hand to host, while none other than guitar greats Nita Strauss and Jared James Nichols got to judge as the four shredders stepped up to the plate.

All four of the musicians had previously bested other competition to earn their spot in this shred off, and they didn’t disappoint. In fact, Strauss was so impressed that she asked two of the guitarists to participate in a sudden death shred off before making her final decision.

Check Out Nita Strauss' Gear

When all was said and done, 13-year-old viral guitar sensation Landon emerged as the victor, with his bluesy, hard rocking solos. Speaking with Nita Strauss about playing her signature guitar after the competition, young Landon stated, “It just feels really good to play. It feels really fast and very smooth.”

Check Out Jared James Nichols' Gear

Watch Landon and his fellow competitors shred away in the video below, and if you want to pick up the guitar, make sure to get all your gear needs met at Sweetwater.com.

DEVOURMENT RETURN WITH ‘OBSCENE MAJESTY’ ALBUM, DEBUT FIRST SINGLE

Slam icons Devourment have returned with Obscene Majesty, their first new album since 2013. The record comes out Aug. 16 on Relapse and you can hear the first single, "Cognitive Sedation Butchery," below.

A cacophony of steam hammer blasts, flattening breakdowns and gurgled vocals, "Cognitive Sedation Butchery" is a testament to Devourment's legacy of brutality and their status as enduring pioneers of the slam/brutal death metal underground.

Since 2013's Conceived in Sewage, Devourment's lineup has been completely revamped with one new member, a returning classic member and two who changed positions within the group.

Ruben Rosas, the vocalist on Devourment's Molesting the Decapitated full length debut, had been playing guitar from 2005 through 2014 and reclaimed his post as vocalist. Original drummer Brad Fincher has been back behind the kit since 2014, while newbie bassist Dave Spencer joined in that same year after bass player Chris Anders, who held down the low end from 2005 through 2014, switched to guitar.

Album Review: GOREGÄNG Neon Graves

Chainsaw grinding death metal from India's best metal label, Transcending Obscurity? Yeah I want some of that. The magic doesn't stop there. Goregang actually feature current and former members of Wombbath, Soilwork and Venom Inc. With a pedigree like that, it's clear that this duo is tapped into something else entirely. Their debut full length, Neon Graves comes two years after their eponymous debut EP. In that time the band has grown by leaps and bounds. Unleashing so called 'new wave of old school death metal' in the vein of groups like Necrot and Outer Heaven, Neon Graves is a thrilling listen. It's the sort of death metal record that is unafraid to hint at its crust roots. Neon Graves embraces its own filth and forces you to choke on the madness that ensures. Politically aware and emotionally crushing, this is death metal from a band whose deep understanding of the aesthetic only serves to push them forward. In a crowded death metal scene, Goregang's oppressive guitars stand out.

Take a track like 'Feeble-minded Rash'. It fuses the bands trademark swagger and blinding heaviness with a punk edge. Lyrics like 'Put down your devices, enjoy the live scene' on, 'This Era Of Human' only reinforces the inherent thoughtfulness behind the band. Goregang also show a wonderful tendency for surprisingly big choruses and encourage shout-alongs. While this may be atypical for the genre in my eyes it adds to the magic of the band. It gives the group a sense of 'realness' that one might not find otherwise in this music. Neon Graves consequently winds up being addictive listening. There are twisted moments and odes to inner torment throughout. In this 'Silence Is Consent' is probably the standout, once more doubling down on the big choruses. Thing is, this is very much also a 'guitar record.' The title track, 'Neon Graves' shows some hard Carcass worship. It's so goddamn fun one would be hard pressed not to want more of it. Sometimes it's the self aware moments and the willingness to embrace the madness of the genre that will set a band apart. That certainly feels like the case here.

Death metal is a genre that is best at its most frenetic. It shines when you think the band is going to fall apart at the last moment. It's the insane moments that keep you on tenterhooks. It's the neverending appetite for destruction that keeps us coming back. Goregang understand this on a fundamental level. Neon Graves is an ode to death metal tropes, but that's what makes it great. The way they expand upon the tropes be it with politics or gang vocals separates them from the pack. There is seemingly no end to the circle pit inducing riffs on this record. Smashed in between worship of the death metal greats are hints at what the band can do next. Sure this is a group that features scene veterans, but it is still a promising debut. Goregang will make you snap your neck headbanging and leave you lusting for blood. If that's not enough out of a death metal record then I don't know what is.

Overall: 8/10

MAYHEM UNVEIL DETAILS BEHIND SIXTH ALBUM ‘DAEMON’

Black metal's most infamous band, Mayhem, have announce the details behind Daemon, their first album since 2004 and sixth overall full length.

The group revealed that their 10-track new record will arrive on Oct. 25 through Century Media Records and that pre-orders will become available starting on Aug. 30.

"Daemon isn’t a direct follow-up to Esoteric Warfare," said Mayhem in a statement. "Like all Mayhem albums of their time, Daemon is unto itself. The wolf solitary and singular. Indeed, Daemon also isn’t a new chapter in our storied career. Rather, it’s a new tome, authoritative yet wild in character."

They continued, "Composed and decomposed with the same lineup - Necrobutcher (bass), Hellhammer (drums), Attila (vocals), Teloch (guitars), and Ghul (guitars) - that handled Esoteric Warfare and performed De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas in its entirety over the last few years, Daemon isn’t a retrofit of classic songs like “Freezing Moon,” “Pagan Fears,” or “Buried by Time and Dust” either. That’s what the live album, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Alive (2016), was for. Daemon is change, an opportunity for the maw of hell to open wider."

View the track listing and artwork, created by Daniele Valeriani, below.

Video Premiere: VHS – ‘Let’s Get Gruesome’

VHS-Were-Gonna-Need-Some-Bigger-Riffs-2019.thumb.jpg.258433b3b4eaa0a82d5790a41d524773.jpg

Sick horror freaks, rejoice! Horror metal troupe VHS have returned with a brand new video for the song “Let’s Get Gruesome” off of their recently-released We’re Gonna Need Some Bigger Riffs album and it is a horror nerd’s dream.

The video, which was shot and edited by Tony Newton, features lots of masks, blood and B-movie body horror that you could possibly desire. Musically, if you’ve worn out the grooves on your copies of Gore Metal and Hacked Up for Barbecue, you’ll love what VHS are putting down on “Let’s Get Gruesome.”

“The song itself was one of the first songs I wrote for the album and it just sounds like VHS to me,” says guitarist/vocalist Mike Hochins. “Cheeky lyrics about our love for the 80’s, simple punky guitar riffs and my best grizzly bear impersonation.”

CANNABIS CORPSE ANNOUNCE ‘NUG SO VILE,’ DEBUT ‘CYLINDERS OF MADNESS’ VIDEO

Cannabis Corpse, kings of chronic and the finest purveyors of marijuana-themed death metal, are back with their sixth album, Nug So Vile, this time paying homage to Canada's Cryptopsy with the album title. Hear the new song, "Cylinders of Madness" and get the details on the new record toward the bottom of the page.

The song, which takes inspiration from Decapitated's "Spheres of Madness," is loaded with riff-tastic reefer madness. Cannabis Corpse's themes may be tongue-in-cheek (just check out the animated video where Adam and Eve smoke from a forbidden bong), but the music is a deadly serious take on classic death metal, as has always been the case with the Virginia-based group.

Nug So Vile also marks the recording debut of guitarist Adam Guilliams who joins mainstays LandPhil (Municipal Waste) and his twin brother Hallhammer (Gatecreeper - live). The album comes out Nov. 1 on Season of Mist and is the band's first full length since issuing Left Hand Pass in 2017.

Pre-order the album here and view the album art and track listing beneath the music video.

GUITARIST TOO YOUNG TO PLAY IN VENUE, STILL SHREDS ON STREET CORNER

It's already hard enough trying to make it as a metal band today without added obstacles. Ancient Burials, a tech-deathcore band from Portland, Oreg. faced an interesting one the other night — their guitarist was too young to go inside.

The band were set to play a show with another Portland band, Paradigm Shift, at the Hawthorne Theatre in Portland on Aug. 20. Apparently one of Ancient Burials' guitarists didn't meet the minimum age of 21 to get into the venue, and their comrades came to their rescue.

"So our homeboy in Ancient Burials was a bit too young to play inside, so we hooked him up with some wireless gear," Paradigm Shift posted on their Facebook with a video of the guitarists shredding on a street corner. "I think it has to do with Oregon's state laws," Paradigm bassist Galen VanEeckhoutte said in a comment. "In my younger years in Michigan playing gigs they always just marked my hands with an X."

He might not be able to play in a 21+ venue, but you know, he can go to war and buy guns. It's cool.

The show appeared to go on as usual, with the Ancient Burials guys headbanging and playing in sync with each other, and small audience of people watching and filming. Metal prevails.

Album Review: HOPE DRONE Void Lustre

On Void Lustre, Australia's Hope Drone treats fans to a lengthy slab of black metal featuring their own take on the familiar combination of black metal and post metal.  Unlike black metal-influenced bands that fully embrace atmospheric post-metal, on Void Lustre, Hope Drone stays closer to black metal orthodoxy, relegating atmospheric and post-metal elements to a supporting role.  It’s an approach that, subject to some minor criticism, works well, although it may miss the mark for listeners who are seeking a more deeply atmospheric or introspective album.

Hope-Drone-Promo.thumb.jpg.772abcde95985397258467194176e3bc.jpg

Combining black metal with atmospheric or post-metal sounds involves an inherent difficulty: navigating the compositional tension between the two genres. Atmospheric metal and post-metal depend on the space and breathability of the music, while black metal, at least in its traditional form, tends towards suffocating sonic density.  Charting a path between these two competing poles inevitably involves some degree of compromise.

Although they name check Deafheaven, Downfall of Gaia, and Wolves in the Throne Room in their promotional materials, Hope Drone keeps one foot more firmly planted in traditional black metal than any of those bands.  Although there are certainly atmospheric moments on Void Lustre, for example on the superb opener, “Being Into Nothingness,” and the equally excellent “In Floods and Depths,” there’s overall not a lot of ambience, psychedelia, or extended post-metal structures on this album.  What you get instead is intense black metal with pummeling blast beats, serpentine song structures, repetitive riffing, and tremolo-picked guitar leads—with elements of post-metal occasionally poking through the black metal barrage along with some brief psychedelic interludes.  The post-metal influence is particularly evident in the lead guitar melodies, which are dripping with effects and have a certain introspective quality to their understated repetition.  It also comes through in the vocals, which are more informed by hardcore than black metal.

But setting aside the handful of moments on this album where the band made a conscious decision to include an obviously atmospheric section, you get a lot of black metal: minutes and minutes on end of blast beats and tremolo.  And unlike some atmospheric black metal bands that attempt to create a sense of atmosphere (even while blasting) by burying everything in a hazy mix, Hope Drone serves up a mix on Void Lustre that is clean, modern, and does a great job letting the listener hear the strong individual performances.

The natural result of Hope Drone’s artistic decision to focus on hitting the listener with lengthy assaults of crisply recorded black metal is that there’s not always a ton of space in the music for the psychedelic soundscapes or introspective excursions one frequently finds in post-metal.  This isn’t a problem because the black metal is executed so well, but it is useful to know, particularly in light of the more dynamically-oriented bands that Hope Drone picks out as relevant points of comparison.

The most obvious criticism of Void Lustre is the length and repetitiveness of both the album as a whole and the individual compositions.  Look, I get that the band has “Drone” in their name and repetition is part of their artistic approach, but it’s still important to maintain the listener’s interest over the course of the album, especially given the heaviness and the density of the music here.  With Void Lustre’s five tracks over ten minutes and the total runtime of over an hour, it's hard not to wonder if a little more aggressive self-editing might have produced a tighter, better album.

But for anyone who is into black metal with just a bit of post-metal around the edges, don’t let the album's length stop you from checking out this very strong outing when it drops on August 30, 2019.

SCORE: 7.5/10

MAYHEM DEBUT RAPTUROUS NEW SONG ‘WORTHLESS ABOMINATIONS DESTROYED’

Black metal instigators Mayhem have returned with "Worthless Abominations Destroyed," the sulfurous first single off their forthcoming sixth album, Daemon.

The band had spent the last couple years on the road, performing their groundbreaking debut, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, in its entirety and it appears a bit of that classic sound has seeped into the writing. That's not to say "Worthless Abominations Destroyed" is merely aping past success — far from it. There's a supremely wicked sense of melody imbued within the claustrophobic atmosphere as vocalist Attila Csihar alternates between hushed rasps and bellowing clean-sung chants.

Read the lyrics and listen below.

Energy of Chaos
Absu and Tiamat sleeps
Dreaming their darkest dreams
Spawning the cosmic gods

Worthless abominations destroyed

Preparing for war
Against the gods
Ultimate blasphemy
Captured and imprisoned
Power-hungry whore
Sliced in half
Creation to rule

Now spawned
Infernal Undead
Anti cosmic gods
Worshipping the Demiurge
Keeping people blind
Black flames tried extinguish
Total lawlessness
Exterminate

"After teasing you guys for over six months, it's finally time to show you what we have been up to in the studio this summer," said guitarist Teloch. "Here's 'Worthless Abominations Destroyed,' a track that was made with the intention to have this 'all is lost and hopeless' feeling."

Daemon will be released on Oct. 25 through Century Media. Pre-order your copy here and view the album art and track listing beneath the video.

Album Premiere: Visceral Disgorge ‘Slithering Evisceration’

visceraldisgorge_deathmetal_decibel_2019-1170x781.thumb.jpg.cdddf138ecb1e17471250263f82a4190.jpg

Visceral Disgorge to Decibel: “We wanted this album to be extreme in every aspect, and we certainly think we accomplished that.” Fair enough, denizens of Baltimore, Maryland, dealers of death, carnage, and bloodshed. Slithering Evisceration, Visceral Disgorge’s first album for new label Agonia Records is an unrelenting beast, blasting through savage riffs and chugging like a Neanderthal on drunk on cough syrup like they own the shit. The follow-up to 2011’s Ingesting Putridity, Slithering Evisceration is next-gen brutality for next-gen cargo-pant wearing heshers. With a reconstituted lineup, Visceral Disgorge are claiming the brutal death metal throne for themselves, telling pretenders to stand the fuck back or be absorbed by the swarm. Or, worse: fucked into oblivion!

Without further ado and with necrotic biogenesis at stake, Decibel and Agonia Records are hereby proud as puss in a papule to offer the world premiere of Visceral Disgorge’s Slithering Evisceration. Thirty minutes never felt so punishing.

Here's a new one for you: miniature drum kits. They look like collectibles but at least on YouTube user has the skill set to cover rock and metal songs on these things and did just that by tackling Slipknot's "Psychosocial." Oh, and it was done inside a refrigerator.

At least as far as the drumming is concerned, the All Hope Is Gone track is one of the 'Knot's most straight forward tracks, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's easy to replicate it on a small kit sitting in front of some bottles of booze.

The drummer uses two thin, long sticks to tap away at the pounding Slipknot anthem and it takes a lot of delicate finesse to navigate Joey Jordison's complex drum fills and rapid snare rolls. Not surprisingly, the only thing absent here is the kick drum as there's natural limitations to this bite-sized setup.

This video is the YouTuber's first foray into playing inside a fridge. There's just five total uploads on the channel at the time this post was written with the other four covers all being played atop a toilet. We're just going to convince ourselves that decision was made purely on the acoustics of the bathroom.

Anyway, the mini drum toilet covers consist of System of a Down's "Toxicity," Foo Fighters' "The Pretender," Twenty One Pilots' "Stressed Out" and Green Day's "Holiday." Watch more here.

If you want to see Jay Weinberg play Slipknot songs on an actual drum kit on a stage and not inside a fridge or on top of a toilet, see if they're playing near you and grab your ticket here.

Dying Fetus Song Featured In New Episode of ‘South Park’

The 23rd season of South Park is underway and in the second episode, "Band in China," a song from Dying Fetus' 2012 album, Reign Supreme, was featured and played by the metal band formed by Stan Marsh and his friends.

Joining Stan in the Crimson Dawn lineup was Butters (guitar, backing vocals), Kenny (bass) and Jimmy (drums). The episode's overview took aim at Hollywood screenwriters catering their content to comply with Chinese censorship as Randy Marsh opts to take his marijuana business to international levels, namely China.

As is typical with South Park, the sub-plot focused on Crimson Dawn and in one scene, the song "Useless Sacrifice" by France's Death Decline was used to represent the band's original music, while "Second Skin" from Dying Fetus figures into the narrative a bit later during rehearsal.

Watch the clip below.

As one YouTube commenter pointed out, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the show's creators, missed a golden opportunity. Instead of "Second Skin," they instead could have opted for "Die With Integrity" from 2017's Wrong One to Fuck With, as the name of Randy Marsh's weed business is Tegridy Farms, a humorous abbreviation of "integrity."

South Park are no strangers to slipping some metal into their programming. Remember that one episode where Eric Cartman played Slayer as he tried to kill a bunch of hippies who were taking over the town? See that and some other memorable moments in the Loud List below the "Band In China" clip.
