But Holden is yet to confirm the more efficient European hatch for Australia

Opel and Vauxhall have revealed an updated Astra in Europe. The question mark remains, however, as to when, and perhaps even if, it will make it Down Under.

The 2020 Opel/Vauxall Astra sports a refreshed look and new powertrain options that promise up to 19 per cent reduced fuel consumption compared to outgoing models.

The new range of petrol and diesel options include a 1.2-litre petrol engine in 81kW/195Nm, 96kW/225Nm and 107kW/225Nm outputs paired to a six-speed manual transmission, while the 1.4-litre petrol engine mated to a new seven-speed CVT auto pushes out 107kW and 236Nm.

Three versions of a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-diesel engine will also be available in either six-speed manual or nine-speed auto guise.

Which of these powertrains will make it to Australia will depend on what Holden decides to import. But a new Astra is not a given.

Holden told carsales this week “it’s too early to say” whether the updated Astra will even make it to our shores.

Vauxhall claims the new Astra will be one of the most aerodynamic compact cars on the market, thanks to extensive wind tunnel development.

There’s a new engine compartment cover, deflector-shaped rear control arms and a shutter-style grille in which the upper and lower sections automatically open and close independently to improve air flow.

Ride comfort is also said to be improved thanks to new suspension and top-spec models will feature new tech such as a heated windscreen, a Bose audio system and wireless phone charging.

Commodore aside, the Astra hatch is Holden’s only passenger car option for Aussie buyers following the axing of wagon and sedan versions, and discontinuation of the Spark and Barina last year.
