Background: The Nanning Scheme & Arrests

On Sep 4, 2026, Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) confirmed that 52 Singaporeans had been arrested and detained in Guangxi, China, during a law enforcement operation targeting suspected pyramid scheme activities and related offences . This is believed to be the largest single group of Singaporeans ever arrested overseas .

Those lured were told the programme was a legitimate business opportunity tied to Nanning’s development — marketed as "the new Shenzhen" — but it operated as a pyramid structure: investors paid large upfront sums and earned returns primarily by recruiting new members . Some victims had already invested tens of thousands of dollars before realising it was a scam .

The Singapore Networking Sessions — Account by "Alex"

A Mothership reader using the pseudonym Alex shared his experience attending two events he believes were linked to the scheme :

1. March 2026 — Public Dinner in Alexandra

- Held at a bar along Alexandra Road, with 60–80 attendees .

- Described as "purely a dinner session and chat" with no formal agenda — but conversations focused heavily on lucrative-sounding investment opportunities in Nanning .

- No commitment was requested on the spot .

- Key allegation: Alex met a Singaporean actress whom he described as "quite high-ranking in the scheme". He also saw a Singapore car influencer present .

- Their presence gave the impression the scheme had "highly credible people" involved, boosting its appeal .

2. June 2026 — Closed-Door Session

- Held at an office belonging to someone introduced as a "director" .

- Only ~20 people attended; photography was banned .

- The "director" was presented as highly trustworthy .

- By the end, organisers repeatedly urged Alex to book a flight to Nanning .

- Red flag: He was told full details of the programme could not be disclosed until he travelled to Nanning in person .

- Alex had planned to go in October 2026 but cancelled after the Sep 4 MFA announcement .

Other Key Details

- The scheme was organised and promoted largely by fellow Singaporeans, both in Singapore and in Nanning .

- Previous reports have also alleged that celebrities were seen at scheme-related events in Nanning itself, appearing to be part of the organising team .

- No names of the actress, influencer, or "director" have been released publicly in this article.

- Mothership has reached out to the actress and the "director" for comment; no response has been reported .

- Investigations by Chinese authorities remain ongoing. MFA has provided consular assistance to all 52 detained Singaporeans but does not intervene in China’s judicial process .

Warnings Issued

- SIAS (Securities Investors Association Singapore) has warned the public to avoid arrangements promising guaranteed high returns via recruitment, noting such schemes are unsustainable .

- Authorities remind the public: if an opportunity requires you to travel overseas to learn details, recruits friends/family, or promises unrealistic returns — exercise extreme caution .

Edmund chung got away with just 1 day jail. Don't think any of these "celebrities" will get a serious jail term.

Do not forget he is a trained actor.

I would trust that he won't repeat his mistakes. But I'm not sure he is really so good.
