incidentally, 1974 was also the yr when old horse first became a minister.

 

the book explores how the economic policies of old horse actually encourage rent-seeking behavior, corruption and stifling innovations.

 

however, limpeh would actually add a further note that if not for the first cold war, international capital would not be investing beginning in the late 1970 thru to just b4 1997.

using declassified documents from the brit archives, the book looks at how bolehsia was formed as a confluence of decolonization, domestic power politics and state-building

as the book was published in 2005, almost 3 yrs after his passing, a large part of the book consists of interviews with many of his acquaintances. as a spoiler, a certain tan and lee r not among the interviewees.

instead of introducing a book abt the XinHai Revolution, limpeh wants to intro a book on a campaign, the huaihai campaign. which ultimately doomed the ROC to taiwan.

 

 this book mostly dealt with the operational matters taken by opposing sides while under-estimating the fact that the CCP had high-level snitches and basically brainwashed several of ROC's brigade level commanders. during the battle, several elite ROC brigades changed sides.

 

another and more important perspective which this book left out was the logistic advantage that CCP held by this point in time.

in order to understand why communism was able to hold sway in the region after ww2, we have to look at how the french took over the region and how it was governed.

this book which limpeh came across many yrs ago painstakingly pieced together how the laotian kingdom reunited under french protectorate after being split into 4 parts in 1707, how the country was ruled with a figurehead laotian king under french protection, the forgotten royal rituals and most juicy of all, how the royal family split along different political ideologies, which directly or indirectly impacted lao.
