The_King Posted September 20, 2022 Share Posted September 20, 2022 A 71-year-old woman was walking home after watering her plants on the lawn behind her HDB flat when she fell into the longkang and injured herself. According to Zaobao, the woman is now accusing the Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council of not taking sufficient safety measures to ensure the safety of public areas and for not keeping the longkang covered. She is also demanding compensation of $30,000 from the town council. In response to the woman’s accusation, the town council pointed out that the elderly woman has lived in the HDB flat for more than 30 years and should be familiar with the area and the situations as to why the longkangs were not covered. The town council also added that the removal of the longkang cover is to facilitate the cleaning of the longkang and to make it easier to check for mosquito breeding. Elderly woman suffered from multiple injuries as a result of the fall A lawsuit has been filed by the Singaporean woman, reported Zaobao. Reportedly, the accident took place at around 8.30am on 8 February 2021 at Block 276 Bangkit Road in Bukit Panjang. According to the woman’s testimony, there is a longkang between the ground floor of the HDB and the lawn. On the day of the incident, she had gone down to the lawn to water plans. Unfortunately, on her way home, she fell into a longkang that was not covered. As a result of the fall, she suffered from injuries in her face and feet, including a severe rupture of the ligaments in her left foot and a fracture in her right middle finger. As such, she is demanding compensation of more than $30,000 to cover her medical expenses and transportation fees. She believes that the accident was caused by the negligence of the Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council. She thinks that not only the town council has failed to ensure the safety of the public areas, but also failed to ensure that all the longkangs are covered. At the same time, she also thinks that the town council did not take good care of the surrounding of the longkang or put up signage to warn residents to be careful when passing by or pay attention to the fact that some of the longkangs do not have covers. The town council has since denied the accusation of negligence. The town council pointed out that since they took over the management of the above-mentioned HDB flats after the constituency was divided in 2001, they have removed a portion of the longkang covers in the same year. As such, the woman who has lived in the area for more than 30 years should already be well aware of this situation. The town council also pointed out that the woman has been taking care of some illegally planted plants on the lawn from time to time, so she should be familiar with the relevant terrain. She should also know that some of the longkangs were not covered. The Holland-Bukit Panjang Town Council also said that the woman had no reason to step over the longkang to the lawn, so the accident could have been avoided if she had been more careful.
