Apple's iPhone 13 is expected to arrive at an online-only event on Tuesday. The new iPhone will likely debut with a collection of new features, upgraded camera specs, new color options (maybe even bubblegum pink) and an updated design with a notchless display. Although we expect to see the new iPhone tomorrow, rumors about the iPhone 13 continue to buzz ahead of its release date.

The latest iPhone 13 gossip came from an investor report from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, as reported by 9to5Mac. According to Kuo, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will be available with 1 terabyte of storage for the first time on an Apple phone. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini will reportedly be available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB options, nixing the 64GB option.

We've previously heard that the iPhone 13 lineup will feature four phones -- the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max -- as predicted by Kuo. This lineup matches the four iPhone 12 models from last year. The iPhone 13 lineup was also referenced in a filing with the Federal Communications Commission for a revised MagSafe charger spotted by 9to5Mac and MacRumors. In the filing, Apple references four new iPhone models alongside the four "legacy" iPhone 12 models: the iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

As we inch closer and closer to the reveal of Apple's new iPhone, hype for iPhone 13 also continues to grow. According to a survey by SellCell, as reported by MacRumors, 44% of current iPhone users plan to upgrade to one of the iPhone 13 models when they become available.

We've collected these rumors and everything else we've heard below, including how the iPhone 13 might compare to the iPhone 12 and everything we know about the iPhone 13's price and other specs. (And don't miss our iPhone 13 wish list.) We have a few more days of speculation before Apple unveils its next flagship, so buckle up and read on. We'll update this story as new information becomes available.

Battery: Larger capacity doesn't mean iPhone 13 will have a longer battery life

A rumor from Chinese social media platform Weibo in early June suggested that the iPhone 13 lineup will feature larger batteries than the iPhone 12 lineup. The specs, shared on Twitter by leaker @L0vetodream, claim a 2,406-mAh battery for the iPhone 13 Mini, going up to 3,095 mAh for the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro, and 4,325 mAh for the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

These battery sizes are all upgrades over the iPhone 12's respective capacities (though Apple doesn't disclose official battery specs). However, battery life is not the same as battery capacity, so it's possible that the increase in iPhone 13's battery size will not translate into a longer battery life. That all depends on the phone's other upgrades and how well its software optimizes for battery life. But compared with other brands' premium phones, Apple's batteries fall short. The batteries in Samsung's Galaxy S21 lineup, for example, range from 4,000 to 5,000 mAh.

When it comes to charging its battery, the iPhone 13 could have some new tricks up its sleeve with faster wireless charging and possible reverse charging capabilities, according to a video from EverythingApplePro on YouTube via leaker Max Weinbach. Reverse charging is a feature that allows you to charge other Qi devices on the back of your phone. Weinbach speculates the upcoming iPhone 13 will have this feature due to a bigger wireless charging coil and a stronger set of magnets housed in the back of the phone. Many of the iPhone's competitors including the Samsung Galaxy S21, Samsung Galaxy S20, the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and the OnePlus 8 Pro already have reverse wireless charging. But, Apple has yet to introduce the feature to its iPhones.

Release date: iPhone 13 will debut on Sept. 14

Apple's new iPhone will almost certainly make its first appearance on Sept. 14 during the tech giant's next online-only event.

We already suspected Apple's next event to be completely virtual since it was previously rumored in a July Power On newsletter from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. He said that the event will be online-only because of the tech giant's decision to delay its return to in-person work due to rising COVID-19 cases.

Apple originally said that all employees would be required to come into the office three days a week starting in September. Gurman says that if Apple stuck with the September time frame, an in-person iPhone 13 event would have been "plausible."

This will be the second year in a row that Apple unveiled its new iPhone online. In 2020, the pandemic also forced Apple to push back the debut of the iPhone 12. It was the first September Apple event in eight years without an iPhone -- thanks to delays in production due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This year, Apple will return to its pre-pandemic timeline. An April report suggested the manufacturing of the iPhones' new chips were running ahead of schedule and Kuo previously forecasted it was business as usual for Apple's supply chain.

Here's what we know:

- Apple likes to hold its events on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, and the upcoming Apple event will be held on a Tuesday.
- iPhone release dates are typically a week and a half after Apple's announcements.
- In general, new iPhones are released on a Friday, around the third week of September.

The iPhone 13 will launch on Tuesday, Sept. 14, so we can expect the release date to be sometime in the third week of September, perhaps Sept. 24. We'll know more once Apple officially unveils its new phone lineup.

iPhone 13 delivery times lengthen as COVID hits suppliers in Vietnam
Camera module constraints add more pressure as China power cuts hit supply chain

TAIPEI/HO CHI MINH CITY -- Buyers of Apple's new iPhone 13 are facing longer-than-expected delivery times due to the COVID wave in Vietnam and the U.S. tech giant's deployment of a new camera feature, Nikkei Asia has learned.

The disruption is mainly associated with constrained supplies of camera modules for the four iPhone 13 models because a significant number of its component parts are assembled in Vietnam, according to people familiar with the matter.

Supply chain sources had expected this year's rollout of new iPhones to be relatively smooth, given that most changes to the updated devices are only incremental and Apple has been able to stockpile many key components.

But the company has expanded the use of its new sensor-shift optical image stabilization (OIS) to all four iPhone models when previously it was only in the premium iPhone 12 Pro Max. This has put suppliers in the position of having to ramp up production without jeopardizing production quality, against the backdrop of severe restrictions due to COVID.

Sensor-shift OIS stabilizes sensors on the camera to make images smoother and video steadier even if users are in motion, and it is an improvement on previous technology that stabilized camera lenses.

"Assemblers can still produce the new iPhones, but there's a supply gap [in] that the inventories of the camera modules are running low," one of the executives with direct knowledge told Nikkei Asia. "There's nothing we can do but to monitor the situation in Vietnam every day and wait for them to ramp up the output."

The situation may improve as soon as around mid-October as production at one of the key iPhone camera module manufacturing facilities in southern Vietnam has gradually resumed in recent days after several months of on-and-off disruption, another executive familiar with the situation told Nikkei.

The current waiting time for an iPhone 13 Pro Sierra Blue with 512 gigabytes (GB) of storage is up to five weeks in China -- Apple's third-largest market -- while waiting time for the same model is also five weeks in Japan and four weeks in the U.S., according to the company's website. Even waiting time for the iPhone 13 mini, which comes with the smallest screen of the four new iPhones, is seven to 10 days in China and the U.S. and up to 15 days in Japan.

Apple declined to comment for this story.

Like other companies, Apple has been wrestling with unprecedented chip and component shortages for the whole year that have held back its revenues. It has diverted some chips meant for its new iPads for use in the iPhone 13 series, which has also led to longer-than-expected delivery times for the new iPad and iPad mini, one of the people with direct knowledge said. Apple has limited consumers in China to a maximum of two iPad purchases for the newly launched models, its website showed, a sign that these supplies are also constrained.

Meanwhile, many Apple suppliers are now scrambling to respond to a widespread production stoppage this week in several Chinese cities in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces -- home to many tech manufacturers. Beijing's tightening control of energy consumption has led to a halt in industrial power supply across the provinces.

So far, key iPhone assemblers Foxconn, Pegatron and Luxshare have not yet been significantly affected by the power cuts, Nikkei learned. But still unknown is the scope of a potential chain reaction from production halts at the makers of materials, components, modules and parts. Suppliers are worried about another wave of unexpected power supply stoppages next month.

Vietnam, an emerging tech manufacturing powerhouse that has received a boost from the U.S.-China trade conflict, has been suffering from a surge in COVID cases since April. The southern part of the country, including Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong Province, where some tech suppliers are based, has been heavily hit by the delta variant.

Suppliers for the likes of Apple, Netflix, Nike and Ikea were forced to suspend production in mid-July as the government imposed strict measures to contain the deadliest wave of the virus so far. Companies could stay open only if workers lived on-site, although it has since allowed more factories to reopen if workers are vaccinated, tested regularly and living in uninfected areas.

The U.S., European and South Korean chambers of commerce in Vietnam -- all representing key foreign investors -- earlier this month voiced concerns to the Vietnamese government that overly strict COVID lockdown measures could risk businesses' willingness to invest in the Southeast Asia nation. One survey showed 20% of companies have already shifted production abroad.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Saturday said the government aims to bring the country back to something resembling normal by the end of this month.

"There's indeed a constrained supply of camera modules for the iPhone 13 series due to the pandemic, but the impact on the shipment of the new iPhones should still be manageable," Eddie Han, a senior analyst with Isaiah Research, told Nikkei Asia, citing his supply chain checks.

Han said it would be worrisome if the power supply restrictions in China continue to affect printed circuit boards, materials and petrochemical suppliers, as then it will likely impact component supplies for iPhones in the coming quarter.
