At the moment, the 5nm chip is the most advanced chip technology offered in the market. Although the chip makers are claiming that they are developing chips with measurements lower than that such as 3nm and 4nm, there is still some time to go before those chips get to see the light of day. Today, IBM has surprisingly announced that they have taken a huge leap by making the first 2nm chip.

The company said that it has successfully fitted 50 billion transistors onto a chip with the size of one's fingernail, helping it to deliver a 45 percent performance boost with the same amount of power as current 7nm-based chips. It is said that many 2nm-based processors are expected to deliver a balance of better performance and improved power efficiency.

Besides that, it is mentioned that mobile devices with 2nm-based processors could have up to four times the battery life compared with the ones with 7nm chipsets. With that said, IBM claims that you might only need to charge those handsets every four days. Other than mobile devices, the chip will also benefit the likes of laptops and autonomous vehicles.
