  3. The US’s CDC may have stirred another controversy, at least for Singapore, following its declaration of the Southeast Asian country as an “unknown” threat level, advising Americans not to travel to the country. The travel advisory is now at a level 4: Do not travel. But the “unknown” parked concern and reports say Singapore was in talks with the US government after the advisory. The advisory alarms many health experts as it also urged Americans not to travel there despite its stricter social distancing measures and more frequent testing than the US, which reported a weekly average of 485,363 infections, whilst Singapore had only 1,404 cases so far. The government of Singapore was reportedly negotiating with the US embassy regarding its declaration this week, according to Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, who told reporters that the CDC was unaware of the country’s surveillance test counts, despite the fact that 150,000 polymerase chain reaction tests were performed every week. In an email to Bloomberg, the CDC explained the adjustment was due to a paucity of testing data from the aggregator Our World in Data, adding that it had not been updated since November 8, last year, which puts Singapore in the same category as Afghanistan, North Korea, and Syria, as well as Pacific island nations that lack the infrastructure to provide Covid-19 statistics. Singapore, on the other hand, has one of the highest vaccination rates in the world, with nearly 90% of the population receiving two doses and 42% receiving a third. It has also lately begun immunizing children aged 9 to 11 years old. Hospitalisations among the sick have remained low despite the fact that the country has been reporting several hundred cases each day, majorly from imported cases. However, Singapore declared this week that it would only consider a complete vaccination status if it had had a booster Covid-19 vaccine, emphasising the necessity of these shots in combating an impending wave of Omicron. Singapore logged 1,281 new cases associated with the Omicron strain in the last week, 1,048 of which were imported last week. https://thethaiger.com/news/regional/singapore/us-cdcs-travel-advisory-changed-to-level-4-after-covid-situation-considered-unknown

  4. Singapore Airlines sells a variety of products through its KrisShop website, and one new item that has just been added will surely interest avgeeks. Singapore Airlines is now selling refurbished business class seats direct to consumers. The “bones” are the same as they were on the plane, though the finishes are a bit different: This is a refinished version of Singapore Airlines’ business class seat that was introduced back in 2006 The seat is upholstered with new leather, and the sides are handcrafted and feature a different design than you’d find onboard You can have the seat customized based on your preferred leather and bone in-lay, and that customization will take 16-20 weeks Each seat has a placard sharing the exact aircraft (including registration) on which the seat was installed, and how many flying hours the seat was in service for Singapore Airlines’ refurbished business class seat Singapore Airlines’ refurbished business class seat This seat costs 6,000 SGD (~$4,410), though the catch is that it can only be shipped to Singapore. Given the bulkiness of the product (and the weight of 105kg), I imagine shipping it elsewhere in the world on your own would add a significant amount to the cost. The business class seat this product is based on It’s so cool to see the way in which Singapore Airlines is working to repurpose these seats and give them new life, so they can be enjoyed for years to come. This isn’t the first time the airline has done something like this — just recently Singapore Airlines had a collaboration whereby life vests and seatbelts were reused for items like coasters, mobile phone bags, and more. Singapore Airlines also reused life vests & seatbelts What would one actually use these chairs for? Over the years we’ve seen quite a few airline seats be resold after there’s no longer a need for them. I’ve always been intrigued by this, but I’ve also wondered what one would practically do with these, both in terms of design and use: Would you plop this down in the middle of your living room, next to a couch? Would you actually sit in it? Or would you put this somewhere as a display item, and not actually use it? Do any OMAAT readers own any old airplane seats that they’ve place in their home? If so, what do you do with it? Bottom line Singapore Airlines is selling former business class seats, which first entered service in 2006. While Singapore Airlines isn’t the first airline to sell old business class seats, what’s unique here is the extent to which the seats are being refurbished. What stunning seats! I’m almost happy that these are only available in Singapore, or else I may be really tempted to try to pick one of these up.

  5. The industry said that the increase in raw material costs and the increase in water and electricity bills are the main reasons for this round of price hikes, and the limited number of diners has also led to a decrease in income. Those who maintain the original price also expressed that they will wait and see for a while, not ruling out price increases after the Lunar New Year. There is a trend of price hikes in the local catering industry, and many coffee shops and cooked food stalls have raised prices one after another. Among them, the biggest increase in coffee and tea is 20 cents, and the increase in cooked food is even more than 50 cents. Respondents said that rising raw material costs and increased utility bills are the main reasons for this round of price hikes. The limited number of dine-in diners has also led to a decrease in income. When they cannot make ends meet, they have no choice but to raise prices. https://www.zaobao.com.sg/news/singapore/story20220107-1230357

  15. SINGAPORE — A man who felt the need to discipline his stepson twisted the boy’s hand until it fractured and caused a kidney laceration when he hit him. The 32-year-old man also caused the boy to lose part of his hearing by exacerbating an old medical condition. The victim was only six to nine years old at the time of the offences. The man was sentenced to two years and nine months’ jail, and six strokes of the cane on Thursday (6 January), after pleading guilty to voluntarily causing grievous hurt, ill treating a child, and criminally intimidating the same child. All parties in this case cannot be named due to a gag order protecting the boy’s identity. Now 11, the boy was living with his biological mother and stepfather when the abuse occurred. The boy feared being alone with his stepfather, as the man felt the boy was naughty, prone to lying, and exaggeration. He would scold the boy and hit him using either a cane, a belt, or his bare hands. In September 2016, the victim’s mother quarrelled with her husband about his methods of discipline. “The victim’s mother told the accused that she felt that the way he disciplined the victim seemed like he was trying to kill him,” said Deputy Public Prosecutor Dhiraj Chainani. “Triggered by his wife’s words, the accused walked into the kitchen and took out a knife. He then pulled the victim towards him, and pointed the knife at the victim,” the prosecutor added. Accused angered over minor issues On 12 November 2019, the stepfather asked the boy for his school report book, but the boy replied that he did not have it. The stepfather did not believe him and checked his schoolbag, where he found the boy’s uneaten lunch. He asked the boy why he had not eaten and the victim replied that he did not request the meal. The stepfather then asked his mother, who replied that the boy had requested lunch earlier. Thinking that the victim had lied, the stepfather punched and slapped his face, elbowed his back and punched his body several times. He was aware that the victim had undergone surgery in 2018 to correct conductive hearing loss in his right ear. After the incident, the boy started having trouble hearing in his right ear again. Hospitalised after abuse A few hours later, the victim was in his room when his stepfather called out to him to ask if his mother had given him money for school. The victim did not respond to the question even when it was asked again. The family’s helper then asked the victim the same question, which the boy heard and answered. Enraged by how the victim had responded to the helper but not him, he pulled the boy to his own room, where they remained for the next two hours behind closed doors. The man then twisted the boy’s wrist till he cried out in pain. The helper heard the screams. The next day, the helper was shocked to see that the boy’s hand was swollen and the left side of his face bruised. The boy said that his stepfather had twisted his left wrist. The helper called the victim’s maternal grandmother, who also called the child’s mother. The boy was later brought to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, which referred the case to the police. He was diagnosed with bruises on his face, left elbow, a kidney laceration and Type A traumatic tympanic membrane perforation of the right ear. The boy also had slightly displaced fractures in his wrist. He was hospitalised for 10 days. He has since undergone surgery again on his right ear and regained hearing to the same threshold as before his abuse. After he was discharged on 23 November 2019, the victim stayed with his maternal grandparents instead of his mother and stepfather. He feared leaving his grandparents' home as he was afraid of encountering his stepfather, who lived a few blocks away. He also had nightmares of his stepfather and missed his mother, whom he felt seldom visited him. On Thursday, the man told District Judge May Mesenas that the boy had “mis-advertised” not seeing his mother, as he would be at his cousin’s house when his wife went over to visit. “Every weekend, I ask my wife to go to my in-laws’ house, but sometimes when she goes, my stepson not around, sometimes he goes to his cousin’s house to sleep overnight and he did not inform mother.” Mitigating in person, the man asked for leniency for his back pain. “I hope I have leniency from you cause I have kids to take care,” he added. The DJ responded that the stepfather should deal with his anger issues instead of subjecting the boy to physical abuse.
