  1. have to examine the borneosians' thinking and political situation of that period in context. back then, a vast majority of almost 80% borneosians r uneducated and they have no concept of nationhood beyond their tribal loyalties in their naive political outlook. so the brits were able to manipulate the report of the cobbold commission via the 'brain-washing' of the longhouse headmen. the brits also did not know that there were vast oil reserves offshore within the 250nm eez until the late 1970s as they presumed that almost all the recoverable r exhausted back in the early 1960s except the bruneians seria onshore field. thats why they were more than happy to get rid of the then uneconomical borneo colonies and hand it over to the kl zheng hu. if they knew there r still so much oil out 50nm from kimanis town, u think they r that kumgong to give these colonies up????? theres a reason why the brits r still holding on to falkland.

  6. SINGAPORE - A 22-year-old man will be charged on Thursday (Dec 30) with allegedly transmitting photos and videos of his private parts to online platform OnlyFans. The man, who was arrested on Wednesday (Dec 29), is believed to be the first OnlyFans content creator here to be prosecuted for transmitting obscene materials on the platform. Police said in a statement on Wednesday that it received a report on Sept 4 that the man had sent the obscene materials via his OnlyFans account. They seized the account on Oct 11 and served the man an order not to access the account. He was warned that a breach of the order would be a criminal offence. But he allegedly wrote to OnlyFans administrators, claiming that his account was not secured, and a password reset was done. He subsequently regained access to the account and allegedly continued to send more obscene materials using the account and a secondary account. For allegedly failing to comply with an order not to access his OnlyFans account, the man will be charged with an offence which carries a fine of up to $5,000, a jail term of up to six months, or both. For allegedly transmitting obscene material, he will be charged with two offences which carry a jail term of up to three months, a fine, or both. On Nov 1, the man was served a fresh order not to access both OnlyFans accounts. Police are investigating whether there was a further breach of the order. It is illegal to transmit any obscene materials by electronic means, to take part in or receive profits from any business where such materials are transmitted, or to advertise the sale of obscene materials, said the police. They added that those who are aware of persons engaging in such activities can lodge a police report. https://www.asiaone.com/singapore/22-year-old-be-charged-over-sharing-obscene-photos-videos-onlyfans

  9. SINGAPORE: A decade ago, local beauty store British Essential’s low prices might have raised eyebrows and even questions about the quality of its products. But today, the brand has become a genuine alternative to bigger pharmacy chains for many consumers, who are looking to get more bang for their buck especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The company, which has a network of seven shops, has seen a growing demand for its products, according to the company’s CEO Christopher Lim. “Right now, especially during this COVID-19 season, everybody is on a budget ... so our (store) concept is actually quite welcomed at the moment,” said Mr Lim, adding that the company plans to open more outlets. In the shops, consumers can find a wide range of beauty and personal grooming products at a discounted price. For instance, a 200ml bottle of shower gel costs as little S$0.90, compared to a price tag of $2 at major pharmacies and supermarkets. Local beauty store British Essential's outlet at White Sands Shopping Mall. (Photo: Christopher Lim) It’s a similar case at personal and household products retailer Venus Beauty, which operates 29 outlets islandwide. The company’s director Danny Lim shared that the store’s products are typically priced between 20 and 30 per cent lower than bigger retailers. He added that while demand for cosmetic products has dropped amid the pandemic, the company is still seeing a healthy demand for daily essentials such as hand soaps and even healthcare supplements. But with every product priced so low, how do these shops manage to pay wages, rent, earn profits and even expand to more outlets? BUYING IN BULK For smaller retailers like Venus Beauty and British Essential, ordering a high volume of items is key to their business strategy as it allows them to achieve economies of scale. This refers to the cost advantages that suppliers get, meaning that with increasing scale, the cost per item is cheaper. Venus Beauty brings in between three and five containers of fast-moving items such as shower gel each month, according to the company's director. (Photo: Venus Beauty) While major pharmacies and supermarkets typically order items by the dozens, these companies import items in bulk, with quantities measured by pallets or even containers. One pallet can easily hold between 600 and 1,200 products, depending on the size of the item, according to British Essential’s Mr Lim. “When we bring in a big quantity (of goods), the cost will be lower so we give the same concessions to the consumer,” he said. Sales of the products have to move fast to clear the large quantity ordered, he added. “That is why we prefer to pass on all the benefits that we get to the consumer because it’s the only way that we can consume our quantity.” Venus Beauty brings in between three and five containers of fast-moving items such as shower gel each month. According to the company’s director Danny Lim, it takes about a week to clear a container worth of stocks. He added that the company has a network of international suppliers that import products into Singapore in bulk, which helps to save on costs. Consumers are also able to purchase products on wholesale terms, allowing them to enjoy bigger discounts. “Certain things in other countries are a lot cheaper than Singapore, even if you just buy it off the shelves instead of buying wholesale,” said Mr Lim, adding that Venus Beauty brings in products from places including Europe, US and Korea. “For instance, if you want to buy a Japanese item, it will be expensive if you buy it off the wholesalers in Singapore, so what we do instead is to buy directly from the (overseas retailer) and then bring it in,” he said. “We cut out the middleman.” COST VS QUALITY A common concern among shoppers about products that are priced significantly lower than major shops, is that they might be of a lower quality or have minor defects. However, Associate Professor Stephen Phua from the National University of Singapore’s law faculty said in some cases, the price differential may simply be due to the actual components in the products and may not actually be inferior. “Different countries may have different technical or regulatory standards which may result in a price differential,” he said. “For instance, one country might have stricter and more rigorous regulatory laws for certain products and as a result, the manufacturer may have to use a certain type of ingredient or have a higher content, which could therefore increase the cost of production,” he added. “So therefore, when two things come in on the shelves, they look identical and they're both genuine products, it’s just that they are priced differently.” Small beauty retailers CNA spoke to also rejected claims that their products are of a lower quality compared to those sold in bigger stores. Venus Beauty said it regularly inspects the quality and condition of the products supplied to them. “If the product is of low quality and efficacy isn’t there, we don’t sell it at all,” said Mr Lim. “We either return it to the supplier or we just throw it away – we don't put it on the market.” He added that the company also tries to source products from the same factories or places of origin that local suppliers get their products from. “Essentially, we’re bringing in the same things. But if let’s say we have to choose something that is not similar, we would buy the products from places such as Europe, US or Korea,” he said. “Consumer expectations in those countries are not low, so even if the products come with a different packaging, it’s not likely to be seen as an inferior product.” For British Essential, which has been in the market since 2003, figuring out which products work and which don’t involves mostly trial-and-error as well as customer feedback. British Essential offers a range of beauty and personal grooming products at a discounted price. (Photo: Christopher Lim) “Previously, people would think that because our prices are so cheap, it may not be authentic. But now, especially because we’ve already been in the market for so long, people know that all our products are very authentic,” said British Essential's Mr Lim. “Consumers are also very smart now because they can just check prices online to compare. It’s become very transparent,” he said. “We are not the cheapest and we are also not the expensive one, so we welcome customers to check the prices. If they are really expensive compared to our competitors, we try to accommodate them by adjusting our selling price.” Product differentiation is another strategy adopted by smaller retailers. Beauty Language, which has 29 retail stores, said it has differentiated itself from competitors over the years by bringing in quality products from US, Europe, Australia, Korea and Japan at an affordable price. “Our main customer base prefers products that are more unique, meaning products you can only find in stores overseas as well as new products,” said the company’s director Jacelyn Loh. “So we differentiate ourselves by launching between 20 and 30 new products every month, as well as exclusive brands that you can’t find anywhere else in Singapore.” Beauty Language, which has 29 retail stores, said it has differentiated itself from competitors over the years by bringing quality products from places including US and Europe. (Photo: Beauty Language) But while these shops may be able to capture good demand from consumers – especially those who are more sensitive to price changes – they face challenges such as supply disruptions and a limited range of products, said Associate Professor Sarah Cheah from NUS Business School’s Department of Management and Organisation. “Retailers who are not the authorised sellers of a particular product or those who use parallel imports may not be able to secure as wide of a range of goods as a regular department store,” she said. “If it's a relatively expensive item that is currently out of stock at the store, consumers may consider checking the store a few more times. But if they actually need it urgently, the likelihood is that they will just go to a regular supermarket to get it.” Still, Assoc Prof Cheah said such businesses have a strong value proposition and will continue to thrive in Singapore’s market. “These shops have been around for quite a long time, and people who have supported them will probably continue to support them because there will always be a good appetite for cheaper deals,” she said. “Many people are sensitive to price differentials and it's also become a lot easier for people to do price comparisons and to be able to make decisions quite quickly due to the Internet.” Source: CNA/vl(cy)

  12. Unity is a common theme every year on Malaysia Day, the holiday celebrated last week that marks the day Malaysia became a federation in 1963. That year, Britain agreed to relinquish control of most of its remaining colonies in Southeast Asia — Singapore, North Borneo (now called Sabah) and Sarawak. They then joined with Malaya, which had gained independence from Britain in 1957, to form a new nation called Federation of Malaysia. The legal instrument to form the federation is called the Malaysia Agreement (MA63). Yet, for the people of Sabah and Sarawak, located on the island of Borneo, the agreement left many with mixed emotions. Some people in these states have long desired secession and, in recent years, the drumbeat of separation has only grown louder. This issue is now a key political issue in the Sabah state election this weekend and upcoming the Sarawak elections, which must be held before the end of 2021. The two parts of Malaysia are separated by the South China Sea. Shutterstock Source of historical grievances In a nutshell, most people in Sabah and Sarawak (also known as East Malaysia) are unhappy with federation because they think it has not delivered on two main promises made in 1962 — high levels of autonomy and economic development. In the first area, the federal government has stripped away a lot of local powers in Sabah and Sarawak in the last 57 years. On top of that, the federal authorities have tried to impose the same toxic racial and religious politics found in Malaya (also known as West Malaysia) to the eastern states. East Malaysia is much more ethnically and religiously diverse compared to the west. For example, the Malay population is a minority in both Sabah and Sarawak; in fact, no ethnic group constitutes more than 40% in either state. As a result, political Islam has not taken root here. Read more: Now that Malaysia has a new government, the real work begins reforming the country In fact, one of the defining features of East Malaysia is intermarriage among the different ethnic and religious groups. The divide between Muslims and non-Muslims is reasonably insignificant — a marked difference from the often suspicious attitude Islamic leaders have toward non-Muslims in Kuala Lumpur. In terms of economic development, Sabah remains one of the poorest states in Malaysia. And the infrastructure in both Sabah and Sarawak is vastly underdeveloped compared to the west of Malaysia. To add insult to injury, more than half of Malaysia’s oil and gas production comes from Sabah and Sarawak. The common joke is that all the iconic infrastructure in peninsular Malaysia, such as the Petronas Towers, Penang Bridge and Kuala Lumpur international airport, was built with money from East Malaysia. The infrastructure in Kuala Lumpur far exceeds that in Malaysia’s eastern states. FAZRY ISMAIL/EPA Britain’s hand in the federation In recent times, one of the biggest grievances in East Malaysia comes from the process of decolonisation administered by the British after the second world war. There is clear, documented evidence that back in 1962, the colonial office in London used its powers and influence to get the local leaders in Sabah and Sarawak to agree to the formation of Malaysia. The British wanted a clean exit from Southeast Asia and to ensure its former colonies did not turn to communism. So the British conceived the idea of a “Federation of Malaysia”, where its former territories would come under a single political entity. Activists in East Malaysia say if the British had not supported the formation of the federation, it was highly unlikely local leaders would have agreed to it. Many would have instead preferred independence or a federation consisting of Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei (which gained independence from Britain much later, in 1984). A campaign event in Sabah ahead of this weekend’s elections. Shutterstock What Sabah and Sarawak want All these historical grievances have led to a growing movement in Sabah and Sarawak advocating for secession from the federation. With elections upcoming in both states, all local politicians — including those serving in the federal government — are now claiming to be MA63 nationalists trying to keep “Malaya out” of Sabah and Sarawak. Social media is one key reason the secessionist movement has taken off in East Malaysia. It is now much easier for advocates to organise and magnify their grievances. What the Sabah and Sarawak people want, at the very least, is a constitutional amendment to recognise the special autonomy of both states. But a significant minority argues the whole federation has failed, and thus secession is the only way forward. Currently, the secessionist groups pose no real threat to the federation. But if enough people buy the secession argument in the future, public sentiment may be too strong for the national leaders to ignore. How should the federal government respond? There are basically two options available to the federal government. The first is the ostensibly easy option — the political route. This would require the federal government to recognise the historical grievances and try to resolve them. However, this is not as simple as it seems. The government is reluctant to grant real autonomy to the two states, worried this will end up weakening federal powers in the other 11 states of the federation. Read more: Will the Najib Razak verdict be a watershed moment for Malaysia? Not in a system built on racial superiority There was an attempt to reword the Constitution last year to symbolically recognise the special status of both states, but it failed. This is the only way to keep the federation together, however. The federal leaders need to agree to recognise the special status of Sabah and Sarawak and grant them wide autonomy in the Constitution, as envisaged in the 1963 Malaysia Agreement. The second option for the government is to play a wait-and-see game. Politically, this is dangerous, as the final outcome could very well be secession. By way of comparison, the push for independence in Catalonia was similarly based on historical grievances that mushroomed into a mainstream political movement and eventually an independence referendum — declared illegal by Spain’s constitutional court. At the very least, what is happening on the ground in East Malaysia suggests the decolonisation process in Southeast Asia is not yet complete. This colonial legacy is not merely history, but is clearly reflected in the present reality.

  13. Which country is Chinese people's favorite? A new survey shows Singapore ranks top while Japan and Canada, which used to be Chinese people's hot travel destinations, saw a sharp decline, with Canada at the bottom in the latest ranking. The survey was conducted online by the Global Times Research Center with market survey firm DATA100, collecting 2,148 valid questionnaires covering 16 Chinese cities from December 10 to 15. It shows that apart from China, 14 percent of the respondents said Singapore is their favorite country, which is followed by Germany, France, the US, Russia and Maldives. Canada is their least favorite with only 0.4 percent of respondents saying they like the country. As for which country that the Chinese public would like to visit the most, the survey also shows Singapore at the top (17.1 percent), followed by Maldives and France. A comparison of data over the past four years shows that Singapore had not been in the top six of Chinese respondents' choice since 2018, before jumping to the top in 2021. However, Japan, which ranked first for two consecutive years in 2019 and 2020, dropped to the sixth place in 2021. Zhou Fangyin, a professor at the Guangdong Research Institute for International Strategies, told the Global Times that it is indeed surprising to see Singapore at the top as both Chinese people's favorite country and favorite travel destination. Noting that the improvement on favorability for Singapore formed a stark contrast with the decline of Western countries on the list, the expert believes that the reasons might include the decline of the negative news from Singapore in recent years. Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has repeatedly stressed that the country does not take sides between China and the US, and he has an objective and calm attitude toward China-US relations. "There are also several similarities between Singapore and China in the fight against COVID-19, which has boosted Chinese people's favorability toward Singapore," Zhou said. On October 15, Chinese President Xi Jinping said during his phone conversation with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong that China and Singapore should jointly work to address the new task of post-pandemic development, and that the current socio-economic development of both countries and the bilateral relations are standing at a new starting point in history.

Driven by the iPhone 13 series, Apple’s sales grew 46% MoM, the highest among all major OEMs in the country. In comparison, China’s smartphone market grew only 2% MoM in October. Apple’s stellar show came at a time when many consumers were delaying their purchases ahead of the Singles’ Day sales in November. Other key OEMs saw MoM declines in their October sales. China Smartphone Sales Share by Brand Source: Counterpoint Research Monthly Market Pulse, October 2021 Note: Huawei excludes HONOR from April 2020 Commenting on the market growth in China, Research Director Tarun Pathak said, “Ever since Huawei’s decline, the top position in China has been changing hands. OPPO became #1 in January 2021 while vivo attained the top position in March 2021. The market dynamics in changed again in October with Apple becoming the new #1 OEM for the first since December 2015. This was driven by the success of the iPhone 13 series, which was also launched cheaper than the iPhone 12 series in China. Huawei has been resilient in the premium segment in China, but this seems to be changing now. Apple, with its strong brand equity, is gaining the maximum from the gap left by Huawei in the premium segment. Apple could have gained more if it were not for the shortages, especially for the Pro versions. But still, Apple is managing its supply chain better than other OEMs. Commenting on the supply shortages in China’s market, Senior Analyst Varun Mishra said, “Due to supply issues, the normal wait time for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max ranges between four and five weeks in China. Some Chinese customers choose to pay premiums to get the new phones delivered immediately. Overall, the China market has been slow throughout the year and Apple’s growth is a positive sign. It indicates that Chinese smartphone users are maturing fast and are looking to buy more high-end devices, which can be a good opportunity for brands. The supply chain is also prioritizing higher-end and higher-margin devices amid the shortages.” Please reach out to press (at) counterpointresearch.com for press comments and enquiries.
