  7. TikTok collected device-specific addresses of users’ smartphones via its Android app for at least 15 months over 2018-19, using a technique that Google had banned developers from using without user consent, according to a Wall Street Journal report. TikTok tracked Android phones’ MAC (media access control) addresses — unique hardware identifiers assigned to a network interface — possibly for advertising purposes, per the Journal story. TikTok stopped the practice in November 2019, after U.S. scrutiny over the app ramped up. The popular video-sharing app is facing a potential ban in the U.S. over national-security concerns, given its ownership by Chinese internet giant ByteDance. The TikTok Android app didn’t notify users of the MAC-address tracking. In addition, TikTok uses an “unusual” additional layer of encryption for user data it collects and transmits back to the company’s servers, which concealed the fact it had been tracking MAC addresses, according to the Journal report. Asked about the report, a TikTok spokesperson didn’t deny the device-tracking allegations. In a statement, the TikTok rep said, “Under the leadership of our Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Roland Cloutier, who has decades of experience in law enforcement and the financial services industry, we are committed to protecting the privacy and safety of the TikTok community. We constantly update our app to keep up with evolving security challenges, and the current version of TikTok does not collect MAC addresses. We have never given any U.S. user data to the Chinese government nor would we do so if asked.” TikTok announced the hiring of Cloutier, formerly chief security officer at ADP, in March 2020. The TikTok rep added, “We always encourage our users to download the most current version of TikTok.” According to the Google Play Developer Policy Center, an app’s advertising identifier “must not be connected to personally-identifiable information or associated with any persistent device identifier” — like a MAC address — “without explicit consent of the user.” In response to the WSJ story, a Google rep said, “We’re investigating these claims.” The WSJ report prompted Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) to urge Google to kick TikTok off its app store. “TikTok skirted a privacy safeguard in Google’s Android OS to collect unique identifiers from millions of mobile devices, data that allows them to track users online without allowing them to opt out,” the senator’s press office tweeted. “Sen. Hawley is calling for Google to ban @tiktok_us from its platform.” The news about TikTok’s surreptitiously device tracking comes as ByteDance is being forced by the Trump administration to divest TikTok’s U.S. operations to an American buyer — or face a ban. President Trump last week issued an executive order that would outlaw business dealings with TikTok in the U.S. by Sept. 21 if TikTok’s U.S.-based business isn’t sold by then. The president invoked national security concerns for the ban, noting that Chinese authorities could demand ByteDance fork over any TikTok user data. Microsoft said it was in talks about a TikTok acquisition and Twitter reportedly has held preliminary talks about a possible merger with TikTok.

  11. yeah, i been to a few hawker centers that ask for 50cents deposit. after meal return the tray to take back 50cents. there will be people who skip the tray... and struggle with hot food in hands. and there will be those that "steal" trays from others, for the 50cents deposit. and there will be those that return an empty tray and leave the bowls and plates on the table. those scholars need to understand that money is a good motivator for people to work... but people also smarter than them to take shortcuts.

  14. eating at hawker centers was much easier in the early days. just order and find your own seats. the hawkers will serve you. you walk away after finishing your meal, the hawkers' assistants will clean up after you. now got so many rules. got to queue up with 1 m spacing to buy food... then got to find a seat for yourself with hot food in hands. after meal, got to clean up after yourself... so now, got new rule? must eat on tray. for what? these rules are making the hawker center less attractive.

Gross domestic product for the April-June quarter -- during which the country was under heightened restrictions -- shrank 13.2% on the year, the government said the same day, worse than the preliminary showing of -12.6%. As the initial data already showed, the country has slipped into a technical recession. "The outlook for the Singapore economy has weakened slightly since May," when the government made the previous forecast, the Ministry of Trade and Industry said in a statement. "The subdued external economic environment will continue to pose a drag on several of Singapore's outward-oriented sectors such as transportation and storage and wholesale trade." The revised full-year range of -5% to -7% means Singapore is headed for its worst performance in its 55 years of history. As of Sunday, the country had confirmed about 55,000 coronavirus infections -- over 90% of them in dormitories for migrant workers -- with 27 deaths. Singapore started easing its movement restrictions in early June and has set up "travel corridor" arrangements with two key economic partners, China and Malaysia. But some businesses have yet to reopen and cross-border travel remains severely constrained. "The reopening of international borders is expected to take place more gradually than earlier anticipated," the ministry added. "This is likely to weigh on the outlook of sectors that are reliant on tourism and air travel." As the outlook remains uncertain, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong advised citizens to brace for a long struggle in his 55th National Day speech on Sunday. "The crisis is far from over," he said. "Business closures, retrenchments and unemployment are all likely to go up in the coming months." The latest key economic indicators have raised red flags: The unemployment rate rose to 2.9% in June, from 2.4% in March, while manufacturing output dropped for the second straight month, down 6.7% from a year earlier. Retail sales fell 27.8% on the year in June. At a news conference after Tuesday's GDP announcement, Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing stressed the government's commitment to supporting the economy and jobs, noting that the second-quarter contraction was the worst on record. "All our government agencies will work together to make sure ... we provide the best conditions possible for our companies to do business and remain connected with the world," he said. "We will strengthen our efforts to help match jobs with our people and to train them to acquire those jobs with new skills." In the coming weeks, he added, the government will lay out plans to shore up specific industries. "We must chart new directions now for a very different and uncertain future," Chan said. The government has already introduced relief packages worth more than 90 billion Singapore dollars ($65 billion), or nearly 20% of GDP, to cushion the pain. The central bank also eased monetary policy in March to boost the economy; the next policy meeting is scheduled for October. Other Southeast Asian countries suffered steep GDP declines in the second quarter, too. The Philippines' economy shrank 16.5% on the year, while Indonesia reported a 5.3% contraction, the first since 1999 when the country was reeling from the Asian financial crisis. Malaysia is due to announce its GDP this Friday, with Thailand following next week.

  27. About 40 people were evacuated after a fire broke out in a flat at Block 111 Bedok Reservoir Road on Friday evening (Aug 7). The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a fire involving the contents of a bedroom in a fourth-floor unit at around 7.10pm. A Stomper shared with Stomp a video showing flames coming from a bedroom as a crowd looks on. "Thankfully there were no casualties," she said. "The affected flat is a corner unit where an elderly couple live. "I am their next-door neighbour." Photos of the aftermath of the fire were posted on SG Chinese Community's Facebook page. The fire was extinguished using one water jet and one compressed air foam (CAF) backpack, an SCDF spokesman told Stomp. "SCDF and the Singapore Police Force (SPF) evacuated about 40 residents from the affected block," the spokesman said. There were no reported injuries and the cause of fire is under investigation.
