SINGAPORE â The suspension of the High Speed Rail (HSR) project aimed at linking Singapore and Kuala Lumpur will be extended to the end of this year. âIn the spirit of bilateral cooperation, we have agreed to a final extension of the suspension period to 31 December 2020,â said Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan in a Facebook post on Sunday (31 May). âThis should provide sufficient time for Malaysia to clarify its proposal and for both sides to assess the implications of the proposed changes,â he added. Khaw noted that Malaysiaâs Senior Minister Azmin Ali had written to him to request a seven-month extension to discuss his countryâs possible changes to the project. Construction on the HSR project, which has been suspended since September 2018, was due to resume at the end of this month. â(The) COVID-19 pandemic does inconvenience the discussions but tele-conferencing can largely overcome the difficulty. The key is joint commitment to the projectâs vision and mutual trust,â said Khaw, adding both sides must be convinced that the changes do not âundermine the original intent of the projectâ. âI remain optimistic that a HSR linking our two capitals will benefit both our peoples,â he added. Separately, Azmin said in his own Facebook post that the governments of Malaysia and Singapore had agreed to resume discussions on the project âin the near futureâ. He added that he had been asked by his countryâs Cabinet to âlead the Malaysian team in the discussions with the Singapore Government on this projectâ.1 point

got metal, got fire got water, got earth in Chinese zodiac / Astrology Water usually represents wealth and money luck in Feng Shui Fire is the element of heat, summer and enthusiasm; nature at its peak of growth, and warmth in human relationships Metal is strong presence in life. A "metal person" is so ambitious that he's often referred to as having the inner strength of steel. Earth is a balance of both yin and yang, the feminine and masculine together. Its motion is inward and centering, and its energy is stabilizing and conserving.1 point

When he moved to Singapore from Korea in 2009, Suh Chin Won, 52, was looking for a job that could accommodate his language barrier. Formerly a logistics manager at a printing company in Seoul, he had relocated to reunite with his family. Three years earlier, his wife Kim Seung Ja, 55, had brought over their daughter Chela Suh, 22, and son Lino Suh, 25, so the kids could pursue a trilingual education here. âSingapore is quite close to Korea, hence we made the huge investment to move here. But we couldnât bear being apart, so my dad came over too,â Chela tells 8days.sg. 1/7 1/7 From office to food court Chin Won eventually settled on being a hawker, which became his first and only job here. He started out at a food court in Tiong Bahru before moving to another stall at Yew Tee, then finally Marsiling, where he had been based for the past four years. âWe chose Marsiling because there wasnât really any Korean food here,â Chela explains. Her dad wakes up at 5am for work, and only leaves his stall at 8.30pm every day. âI think he found that [being a hawker] was the best thing he could do at that time. We came up with the recipes together,â says Chela. The family offers wallet-friendly homely fare like the kind you often see K-drama characters eating â budaejjigae ($5.50), kimchi fried rice ($4), beef, pork and chicken bulgogi ($5 to $6), seafood ramen ($4.80), tteokbokki ($4.50) and BBQ saba fish ($5.50). They also sell homemade kimchi (from $5 to $10). 2/7 2/7 Cooked with love Chela proudly shares that her dad does not use store-bought sauces. âEverything is marinated by him,â she says. While she admits that he was at first ânot much of a cookâ, she praises him for having âcome a very long wayâ. She recounts, âWhen I first tasted his saba fish 10 years ago, I didnât like it. I found it too salty.â But the Suhs diligently tweaked their recipes to cater to Singaporeansâ taste buds. Chela observes that âKoreans prefer saltier food with a spicy kick, and Singaporeans like sweeter flavours with less spice.â 3/7 3/7 No name stall Like most kopitiam stalls, her dadâs shop doesnât have a name (on its menu is a generic âKorean Cuisineâ logo). While her mum helps out at the eatery occasionally, she could not do it full-time. According to Chela, âMy mum is healthy but not very strong â she canât stand for too long.â Instead, omma is working at a Korean minimart. Meanwhile, Chela is a Year 2 business undergraduate at NTU, while her brother Lino is âworking a corporate job in construction technologyâ. 4/7 4/7 Lost in translation Brother-and-sister lend a hand to their dadâs one-man-show whenever they have time. As Chelaâs university classes and exams are cancelled due to Covid-19, she has been helping her dad daily at the stall. While Chin Won had initially hired stall assistants, he has since stopped doing so. âThere were miscommunications âcos of the language barrier,â recalls Chela. âAnd some of the stall assistants werenât very [customer-oriented]. He was afraid it would affect the image of the business, so he would rather take on the burden of everything himself.â She says her dadâs ânumber one problemâ is still language, though he can now speak a smattering of Mandarin and converse in English. âBut heâs not very fluent still. My brother and I were doing all the translation for him,â she shares. 5/7 5/7 No delivery for now Despite the circuit breaker, the stall is strictly takeaway-only with no delivery service. There's no pre-ordering too, except for bulk orders. âMy dadâs English is not very good, so weâre afraid there will be miscommunication [with phone orders]. Itâs very hard for him to juggle both [cooking and taking delivery orders] when thereâs only one chef,â Chela frets, though sheâs currently looking into engaging âeasy-to-useâ delivery services for customers who donât have âthe luxury of time to come downâ. 6/7 6/7 Business hit by Covid-19; Facebook to the rescue When Covid-19 hit, Chin Wonâs business wasn't spared. While his daughter says they arenât in a position of âsufferingâ, their ârevenue decreased by a lotâ. She tells us, âI always see him sighing and looking very sad, so I thought about how I could help him.â Then her friendâs aunt told her about a popular non-profit Facebook group called Hawkers United - Dabao 2020, where hawkers could post and spread the word about their stalls for free. The volunteer-led initiative now has over 267,000 members comprising both F&B owners and customers. After Chela posted about her dadâs stall, his business immediately spiked. âOur daily sales went from 60 to 70 orders a day to about 240 orders now,â she shares. 7/7 7/7 Dadâs the way As for her dad, she says: âAt first he was very shocked, and he couldnât handle [the demand]. But heâs getting on track now. Ever since I posted on Facebook, he lost 6kg [from working overtime]!â Netizens have been so supportive, the Suhs even have customers from Tampines journeying to their Marsiling stall to tapow food. And what keeps Chin Won going for the past 10 years, despite leaving behind a cushy air-conditioned office job for a hot stove in sweltering Singapore? âHe says itâs his children,â laughs Chela. âHeâs a positive and outgoing person. Heâs the kind of dad whoâd do anything for his family.â #01-2188, Blk 136 Marsiling Rd, S730136. Open daily 10am-7.30pm (last order around 6.30pm-7pm). For large orders, call or text Suh Chin Won in advance at 9689-4007.1 point
