SINGAPORE -- Orchard Road in Singapore, one of Asia's premier shopping streets, has yet to fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic due to the slow return of Chinese tourists, according to the chairman of a local business group.

Markham Shaw, chairman of the Orchard Road Business Association, told Nikkei Asia in a recent interview that traditionally locals and tourists each do 50% of the consumption in the area.

"Orchard Road is very dependent on both local consumption and tourism consumption," he said. "And because tourism isn't really back to where it was pre-pandemic, I would feel that the sales on Orchard Road are probably not quite back to what they should be, either.

"I guess it's due to China's slowdown. The very strong Singapore dollar, too, [is] an issue for me. It's quite expensive for people to purchase here."

The yuan has depreciated more than 4% against the Singapore dollar this year.

Shaw said his association is tracking the Chinese economy quite closely. "We're hopeful," he said. "However, it really depends on how the Chinese economy progresses and whether their consumption and spending level comes up domestically."

The association plans trips to China in the coming months to gain an understanding of the situation, he said.

The city-state's official tourism statistics show total visitor arrivals came to 1.1 million in November, 28% lower than in the same month in 2019, before anyone had heard of COVID. Chinese accounted for about 104,000 arrivals, down 58% from four years earlier.

Shaw feels that the Chinese are "still the top spinner" on Orchard Road, followed by Indonesians. But he also noted the robust demand from Indian tourists. Singapore had about 90,000 Indian tourists in November. The large number of "Indian tourist arrivals was a surprise," he said. "It was very strong."

Orchard Road is home to luxury brand boutiques, shopping malls and hotels, and Shaw pointed out that spending on high-end goods remains high.

"Right now," he said, "we're sort of at a level where we can survive, and the numbers are good, particularly for luxury. The spend on luxury goods on Orchard Road has been very high and remains high. It's a lot of the mid-range spenders that's missing."

He noted that Singapore in January will raise its goods and services tax (GST) rate to 9% from 8%. The increase, Shaw said, won't "affect the tourists much, but it does affect locals. It's half of the spend of Orchard Road. Ideally, we would love the government to come and delay that a little bit."

Currently, the business association is encouraging its member companies to focus on "the sustainability of Orchard Road," perhaps by using renewable energy or reducing waste, to maintain the area's attractiveness to tourists, Shaw said.

"I think that the next group of travelers that come to Singapore will be more conscious travelers," he said. "They'll be looking to stay in hotels where they see less waste."

HENZHEN – BYD has unveiled a new system for electric cars that the Chinese carmaker says will allow them to be charged almost as fast as it takes a regular car to refuel.

BYD’s new battery and charging system was capable of providing 470km of range in five minutes in tests on its new Han L sedan, chairman and founder Wang Chuanfu said on March 17.

Being able to charge a car in the time it takes a combustion engine vehicle to pull in and out of a gas station could convince drivers who aren’t willing to make lengthy stops to go electric.

The new system, which will underpin many of its future electric vehicles, could provide another boost for BYD, which has come from behind to rival US manufacturer Tesla as the world’s top EV seller.

The speeds would be comfortably ahead of Tesla’s Superchargers, which can add up to 275km of range in 15 minutes. Tesla, however, has a much larger network of more than 65,000 Superchargers worldwide. Mercedes-Benz Group’s new entry-level CLA electric sedan unveiled last week can add 325km in 10 minutes of charging.

BYD’s new EV platform will allow cars to reach 100kmh in two seconds, Mr Wang said at the event at the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen.

This is BYD “elevating the game to another dimension”, Mr Xing Lei, an independent China autos analyst, said.

BYD has had a stellar start to 2025. The company, which makes only hybrid and fully electric cars, sold more than 318,000 passenger vehicles in February, up 161 per cent from a year earlier.

It is the top carmaker in China, the world’s biggest car market, with a share approaching 15 per cent. BYD’s Hong Kong-listed shares are up about 45 per cent in 2025.

An advanced EV powertrain could further boost demand for BYD’s next-generation cars, said Ms Joanna Chen, a China autos analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence. “This could mark the beginning of a new wave of model roll-outs, propelling BYD’s battery-electric vehicle sales to catch up with hybrids after they fell behind in 2024,” she said.

BYD is also starting to set the pace in advanced driver-assistance technology. The company earlier in 2025 said that it’s taking this to the masses by including features like lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control in some of its cheapest models.

BYD’s Super e-Platform may also pose a competitive threat to Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), currently the world’s largest manufacturer of EV batteries. Li Auto, for example, is using one of CATL’s latest-generation batteries to enable charging that gives 500km of range in 12 minutes. BLOOMBERG

Details of the new BYD Han L electric sedan — which is named after the Han dynasty — have been revealed by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The Han L is a full-sized sedan measuring more than five metres long. There is no word on whether it will come to Australia, but it shows the brand’s performance potential.

It uses two electric motors — one on each axle — to deliver 810kW and all-wheel drive. It can sprint to 100km/h from a standstill in just 2.7 seconds.

That’s bonkers performance, with power outputs easily eclipsing V12-powered supercars such the Ferrari 12Cilindri and Lamborghini Revuelto.

There is also a single-motor, rear-wheel drive version of the Han L that still makes a heady 500kW.

Joining the 500kW club used to be a challenge, but now it can be achieved with just a single-motor electric car.

The motor used in the Han L is claimed to be the second most powerful electric motor used in road-going vehicles. Only hypercar maker Koenigsegg uses a more potent motor.

The Han L uses a circa-83kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery to deliver a driving range of more than 600km in the dual-motor version and more than 700km in the rear-wheel-drive model. Both driving range claims are based on the more lenient China Light-Duty vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), so expect about 20 per cent less when tested on the benchmark WLTP test cycle.

Charging speeds are off the charts, too.

The Han L allows for users to plug in two DC fast chargers at the same time, which combined with 945-Volt charging architecture will allow users to refill the battery from 16 top 80 per cent in just 10 minutes.

It is unlikely we will see this kind of performance in a BYD vehicle Down Under, but it may appear in its Denza sub brand that is due to launch here soon.

SINGAPORE: Although this is the season to be jolly among many, this is also the season our healthcare professionals and system are embracing surges of patients with acute respiratory infections.

In the week leading up to Christmas, the average daily number of patients seeking treatment in polyclinics for acute respiratory infection was 3,475, an increase of 30 per cent over the four weeks before, according to the Ministry of Health’s weekly infectious diseases bulletin

These patients could be infected by one or more respiratory pathogens that may cause flu, pneumococcal disease or COVID-19. The severity of these infectious diseases can be minimised by vaccinations. Yet, according to the Health Ministry, vaccination rates against COVID-19 have been falling recently. This trend is concerning and vaccine fatigue may be one of the reasons.

 THE IMPACT OF VACCINE FATIGUE

Vaccine fatigue can be defined as a transitional stage from vaccine acceptance to vaccine hesitancy on the uptake of additional updated booster shots.

Vaccine fatigue usually applies to individuals who already have had at least two doses of vaccine against a specific or a panel of infectious pathogens. It can be due to fear of previous episodes of side effects, misinformation and disinformation on low effectiveness and non-urgency of booster vaccines during the endemic phase.

While the majority of these respiratory infections may be self-limiting, a proportion can be severe, even lethal, especially for the more vulnerable populations such as the elderly or those with underlying medical conditions, or a weakened immune system.

The recent surge of COVID-19 cases has led to an increase in the average daily ICU admissions. Among those admitted, most of the deaths occurred among the elderly aged 60 and above.

 OTHER FACTORS FOR COVID-19 SURGE

Besides vaccine fatigue, the recent surge in COVID-19 cases can also be attributed to a few other factors.

First, decreasing herd immunity in the population. Immunity from the vaccine typically wanes over a period of up to a year after each dose. Coupled with the slower uptake of the recent booster vaccine, herd immunity can be challenging to maintain.

The Singapore government has updated its COVID-19 vaccine recommendations, encouraging people aged six months and above to receive an additional dose in 2023 or 2024.

The current updated booster vaccine is able to provide effective immunity against the Omicron XBB 1.5. subvariant strains as well as cross-protection immunity against other circulating Omicron subvariant strains, reducing the risk of disease severity.

As reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), a recent surge of the JN.1 subvariant is likely to circulate more predominately globally, and replacing other subvariants.

While evidence is still lacking on the cross-protection immunity of the most recent vaccine against the JN.1 subvariant, both the WHO and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expect the updated COVID-19 vaccine to remain effective. This is based on the limited differences in the virus’ genetic mutations assessed through next-generation sequencing technology as part of ongoing surveillance strategy.

With new subvariants evolving constantly, a population with a lowered herd immunity would likely experience new surges of cases yearly, similar to the influenza transmission during the winter seasons of the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

Second, the year-end travels and festive gatherings have increased the risk of exposure and transmission of COVID-19 within a short period of time at a specific location, akin to a super-spreading event.

Lastly, growing complacency as we have been living in the endemic phase since early 2023. A “false sense of security” reduces the motivation for one to take up additional booster shots. This has also led to a drop in compliance over time for personal prevention measures such as masking up in crowded indoor settings, self-isolation when ill and practising frequent handwashing with soap.

 VACCINE FATIGUE CAN BE MINIMISED

A recent study published in the journal Nature Medicine suggested that a vaccine mandate is not likely to overcome vaccine fatigue, but instead may create negative sentiment and mistrust about the vaccine and government during endemicity.

To reduce vaccine fatigue, the study suggested increasing awareness of updated vaccines, providing free and easy access to vaccines, and the requirement of vaccine passport for travel.

Additionally, strengthening campaign messaging on booster vaccines as well as complementing this with medical consensus and celebrity endorsement would help to remind people of the importance of protecting their vulnerable loved ones.

A number of these factors are also highlighted in a separate study published in the journal Vaccine on vaccine acceptance. This suggests the importance of adopting the same risk communication strategies that were used to advocate for vaccine uptake during the early phase of the pandemic to increase the uptake of boosters during the endemic period.

One possible approach might be to adopt the strategies that were used to promote childhood immunisation in Singapore. Under the childhood immunisation programme, frequent touchpoints with the paediatrics care team for developmental screening as well as engagement with family physicians and schools served as effective platforms to raise vaccine awareness and disease risk among parents.

Similarly, the Healthier SG programme could serve as an effective platform. Beyond their role in managing population health, family physicians play an important role in educating their patients on the importance of staying up to date with vaccinations to reduce the risk and severity of diseases that could be detrimental to their health.

 PREVENTION MEASURES REMAIN CRITICAL

Despite the high accessibility and availability of a safe booster vaccine against COVID-19, the vaccine is only highly effective in reducing the risk of hospitalisation and disease severity. It is not likely to prevent infection.

Masking up is highly encouraged among all, especially among vulnerable populations in crowded indoor places. Masking up has been found to reduce the risk of infection resulting in COVID-19 by up to 45 per cent in community studies. High compliance towards proper masking is also likely to reduce the risk and transmission of other respiratory infections.

Combining masking with vaccination is likely to be more effective in reducing disease burden due to immunity waning, circulation of new subvariants and vaccine fatigue.

As we say goodbye to 2023, going for your booster vaccines and masking up will set the stage for an excellent start to the new year.

Need help with moving home? Get a delivery van instead, a Grab driver said, after he was told by a passenger to help.

Taking to Facebook in a group for private-hire drivers on Thursday (Dec 28), Lim Gim Koon said that he was at The Sail @ Marina Bay at that time.

"The passenger expected me to position my car which is already blocking many vehicles along the short driveway to assist him to move his household items," the private-hire driver said.

"He shouted vulgarities at the other cars honking behind and made a bad sign when I told him it's not acceptable to load all the items into the car."

While the original destination was to a condo located at Lorong 6 Geylang, Lim shared a screenshot that he had cancelled the ride.

"A nightmare cheapo passenger," he said. "He booked a four-wheeler but insisted he booked a premium car.

"Go book a [Lalamove] van instead. Disgrace."

In the comments, several netizens agreed with how Lim dealt with the passenger's demands.

"We private-hire drivers fetch passengers, not house movers," one of them said.

"If drivers help, they should be appreciated. But we shouldn't have to help at all. Later we get complaints about damaging his items. Who's going to bear responsibility for this rude clown then?"

Another netizen pointed out that the boot of a private-hire car would have enough space to fit the items for the passenger.

"Just unfold the rear seats. Just remember, boot space is not for your own personal storage but for all passengers," he said.

AsiaOne has contacted Lim and Grab for more information.

SINGAPORE - Sales of Mitsubishi cars in Singapore will be suspended in 2024 because of a revised emissions scheme that applies from Jan 1, The Straits Times has learnt.

The development will not affect existing owners, who will continue to be supported by multi-franchise motor group Cycle & Carriage (C&C), which represents the brand.

C&C’s spokesperson said the move to suspend sales of new cars was driven by the change in the vehicle testing requirement and the enhanced Vehicular Emissions Scheme (VES). Both take effect on Jan 1, 2024.

The Mitsubishi showroom in Alexandra Road was devoid of cars on display when ST visited on the afternoon of Dec 27.

In 2025, C&C expects to bring Mitsubishi back with new models that would fare better under these regulations, starting with a new Outlander sports utility vehicle (SUV). Exact details of this model have not been made public.

Registrations of Mitsubishi cars in Singapore fell from 3,632 units in 2016 to 238 in 2022. It will end 2023 with just 61 units.

Mitsubishi’s global footprint has also been shrinking. In 2020, the brand withdrew from Britain. In October 2023, it announced it was stopping production in China.

The brand produced slightly more than one million cars in 2022, compared with 1.5 million in 2018, before Covid-19-related disruptions affected operations.

Mr Arj Pillay Kulasegaram, 48, who has retired from running a racing team full-time, said that while the temporary suspension of Mitsubishi sales here was a sad development, he has lost interest in the brand since production of the Lancer Evolution stopped in 2016. This was a four-wheel-drive, turbocharged car favoured by motorsports fans.

Between 1999 and 2022, he owned seven Mitsubishi cars. All but one were Evolutions. Most of them were used in Kallang carpark rallies organised by the Singapore Motor Sports Association.

From January, Singapore will adopt the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) as the sole testing standard for new private cars and taxis sold here.

WLTP is a stricter test which is said to provide more realistic emission results through a better representation of real-world driving performance.

C&C said it does not have the official WLTP results for Mitsubishi cars.

It estimates models such as the Outlander, a two-litre, seven-seat SUV, would fare worse under the revised VES, adding at least $15,000 to the cost of the vehicle.

The VES sets thresholds for five vehicular emission pollutants, including carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.

Based on the car’s worst-performing pollutant, it will be categorised into one of five VES bands: A1, A2, B (or neutral), C1 and C2. All pollutant thresholds are being tightened from 2024.

Buyers may enjoy a rebate if their cars are more eco-friendly, or fork out a surcharge for more pollutive vehicles.

The amount of tax rebate or penalty will remain unchanged for all bands except A2.

Vehicles under this band – including high-powered electric vehicles, most hybrids and smaller, more efficient internal-combustion-engine cars – will get $5,000 in rebates in 2024, instead of the current $15,000.

The tougher standards, coupled with the adoption of the WLTP, will push some car models into less preferable VES bands in 2024, driving up their costs. For example, if a model is downgraded from Band A2 in 2023 to the neutral band in 2024, it will not get the $5,000 rebate.

Checks with various dealerships showed that mass-market models such as the Mazda 2 and Mazda 3 sedans and Nissan Qashqai, a compact SUV, will be downgraded in 2024 to the neutral band from Band A2, as will premium options such as the BMW 116i and 216i Gran Coupe.

Parallel-imported cars undergo a slightly different Land Transport Authority approval process from cars offered by authorised distributors. Unlike officially supplied cars, parallel importers do not have access to test results supplied by manufacturers from abroad, which will apply to all units of the same model. Therefore, their cars are tested physically.

This can produce different results. For example, the parallel-imported, non-hybrid Honda Vezel in 2023 is in Band A2, while the identical Honda HR-V sold by the distributor is in the neutral band.

Mr Neo Nam Heng, adviser to the Automobile Importer and Exporter Association, said the non-hybrid Honda Vezel will drop to the neutral band in 2024. This will put it in the same band as the Honda HR-V.

Two BMW models – the 318i and 420i – will move from Band B into C1, which comes with a $15,000 surcharge, in 2024. The Peugeot 3008 and 5008 and Suzuki Jimny are also similarly affected, moving from the neutral band in 2023 to Band C1 in 2024, according to the respective distributors.

The Volvo XC60 SUV will drop to the lowest Band C2 from C1. This will draw the largest surcharge of $25,000 in 2024.

Eight motor dealers representing mass-market and premium brands told ST they believe higher vehicle costs stemming from the VES changes will not affect car prices significantly in 2024.

Most said this will be cushioned by an anticipated drop in certificate of entitlement (COE) premiums.

An increased supply of COEs for tender in 2024, and reduced VES incentives weakening traders’ ability to bid, are expected to cause COE prices to fall.

Two dealers made the point that given that the VES changes affect various models in different ways, some cars may be dropped in favour of those that will fare better under the scheme.

iaomi To Officially Unveil Its First EV On 28 December 2023

The electric sedan, known as the SU7, is touted to offer performance on par with the Porsche Taycan Turbo.

BY HEIRUL KAMEL DECEMBER 27, 2023

Xiaomi EV, the automotive arm of Xiaomi, will host a launch on 28 December 2023 to showcase its first ever electric vehicle (EV), which is officially known as the SU7. The event will be held online via the brand‘s official social media channels on Facebook, YouTube and X (formerly Twitter).

According to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, “SU” stands for “Speed Ultra” and the company’s upcoming SU7 EV is touted to be a “performance beast”. While no specifications were provided, the car is promised to be on par with the likes of the Porsche Taycan Turbo. Its advanced technologies and ecosystem, on the other hand, are said to be inspired by those offered in cars such as the Tesla Model S.

Lei Jun also noted that the Xiaomi SU7 is in “trial production” and is expected to hit the domestic market “in a few months”, likely in China first. No pricing has been confirmed just yet, but the Xiaomi CEO promises that it will exceed expectations. More information regarding the EV and the technology involved in its manufacturing will be revealed during the launch tomorrow, he added.

Meanwhile, unofficial sources are claiming that the Xiaomi SU7 will feature 73.6kWh and 101kWh batteries provided by fellow Chinese manufacturers BYD and CATL. The former is said to offer CLTC ranges of 628km and 668km depending on powertrain choice, whereas the latter goes up to 750km and 800km.

Apart from that, the car will allegedly measure at 4,997mm in length, 1,963mm in width, between 1,440mm and 1,455mm in height, and a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. Weight-wise, the 73.6kWh trim is claimed to come in at 579kg while the 101kWh variant is at 645.8kg.

We’ll only know if these leaked specifications are accurate or not once the Xiaomi SU7 is officially unveiled. Those interested can tune in to the online launch event tomorrow at 2pm local time via the brand’s official social media channels mentioned earlier.

	Stingy Service

A carjacker assaulted a 34-year-old pregnant woman in Illinois, stealing her Volkswagen, along with her two year old boy trapped in the back seat, and running her over on the way out. Although badly injured, the woman managed to call 911. With little idea of where the carjacker fled, Lake County sheriffs rushed to call Volkswagen's Car-Net service to track down her car.

But Volkswagen Car-Net refused to play ball — not because it had any qualms with forking over information to the police, but because the mother hadn't renewed her subscription.

Instead, VW insisted someone pay the $150 fee to reactivate the tracking service. Sheriffs pleaded with the company, explaining the gravity of the situation — but VW didn't budge.

While the fee was eventually paid by a relative, the dispute ended up causing a costly delay, which deputy chief Chris Covelli described as "16 minutes of hell," according to the Chicago Tribune.

And by the time it was over the information ended up being "worthless," Covelli said, because the child, alive and well, had been dumped at a parking lot, where a bystander found him and called the police. The stolen car was also recovered not long after.

Thankfully the child was found safe and sound in this case, but what if the carjacker managed to switch cars with the child because VW was too busy pinching pennies?

	Fuss Auto

In response to the blunder, Volkswagen has tried shifting blame for the faux pas to its third party subcontractor responsible for running the Car-Net service.

"Volkswagen has a procedure in place with a third-party provider for Car-Net Support Services involving emergency requests from law enforcement," a VW spokesperson said in a statement. "They have executed this process successfully in previous incidents."

"Unfortunately, in this instance, there was a serious breach of the process," they added.

But if the automaker's find-my-car service isn't even available during an actual child kidnapping, what good is it for?

Not for much, apparently. Last year, many VW customers found out that their cars' Car-Net systems no longer even worked because they were lousily built on now obsolete 3G technology, even though the automaker knew it was already being replaced with 4G LTE, according to a lawsuit. The suit further alleges that VW never informed customers that Car-Net would be "rendered obsolete" by the switch from 3G to 4G.

Adding to that list of grievances against Volkswagen's services: in 2021, VW experienced a massive breach of its data — once again, through a third party — that compromised the personal information of over 3 million customers. VW sure doesn't sound like the safest pair of hands to keep your location data with.

A day after the video was posted, XPeng Motors issued a statement stating that they had taken down the app after receiving feedback about "poor user experience".

TOKYO -- Honda Motor and three Japanese rivals plan to discontinue about 20 motorcycle models by the end of this year, Nikkei has learned, in response to tougher emissions standards to be implemented in Japan in the fall.

The retired motorbikes represent 10% of the roughly 190 models available from Honda, Yamaha Motor, Suzuki Motor and Kawasaki Heavy Industries.

Going forward, the companies will shift to electrics. Honda will electrify its entire lineup of vehicles by the 2040s. Yamaha will make 90% of new vehicles plug-ins by 2050.

Honda, the world's largest motorcycle company, will retire approximately 10 out of 80 models. The affected bikes include popular models like the CB400 Super Four, a midsized motorcycle which has been a bestseller since the 1990s.

Also on Honda's chopping block are models from the full-sized Gold Wing series, as well as the Benly scooter made for delivery services.

Yahama will stop selling two models from its flagship FJR1300 series of tourers. Suzuki will pull at least five out of roughly 20 models from production lines by October, including the midsized GSX250R.

Kawasaki Motors, a subsidiary of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, stopped delivering some full-sized motorcycles last year.

Japan adopted tougher emission standards at the end of 2020 that applied to new models. The standards will apply to all existing models in November.

The rules are modeled after the European Union's Euro 5 law, introduced in January 2020. It mandates that nitrogen oxide emission be cut by up to 33%.

To comply with Japan's incoming regulations, motorcycle manufacturers will need to install upgraded catalytic converters or to completely redesign engines. However, it is extremely expensive to develop new engines. The price of rare metals used in catalytic converters has jumped to new highs.

Redesigning existing motorcycle models "would raise the sale price three to four times," said a source from a major motorcycle manufacturer. There is no prospect for growth for the Japanese market, so the makers will significantly shrink lineups and cut back on new model rollouts.

Motorcycle manufactures anticipate electrified models will sway competitive advantage amid the shift toward carbon reduction. The companies are concentrating research and development funds into electrics. Because Japanese players control 40% of the global motorcycle market, that trend is expected to hasten the transition away from gasoline two-wheelers.
